Modern Love – “Goddesses & Doormats” - Picasso’s Women Soho House Theme – ‘Passion’ February 2018 Picasso’s artistic output was almost as voracious as his well-documented appetite for women. More often than not, his polygamous affairs ended more painfully for the woman. Major stylistic shifts were often precipitated by a change of mistress or wife. Paradoxically, the guru of Modernism referred to women as either goddesses or doormats, portraying them as such, from Dora Maar and Françoise Gilot to Eva Gouel and Olga Kukhova. Depictions vary from the quiet submissive nature and youthful beauty of Marie-Thérèse Walter in ‘The Dream’ to the femmes fatales of his infamous ‘Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’ canvas in the MoMA. This talk pre-empts the forthcoming Ey Exhibition, ‘Picasso – Love, Fame, Tragedy’ at the Tate Modern, 8 Mar – 9 Sep 2018.
