"e special issue is to address the state of knowledge in theareas of seismic behavior of structures; response of struc-tures under blast, shock, and impact loads; material behaviorunder blast; impact and explosion tests; structural mecha-nism and damage evolution; protection concepts and design;and linear/nonlinear analytical/numerical modelling ofstructures and simulation. "is issue will benefit structuralengineers for modelling structural analysis and design forextreme loads (seismic, blast, and impact), in which thestructure primarily behaves nonlinearly and inelastically."e investigators have been invited to contribute originalresearch articles as well as review articles that have beenstimulating the continuing efforts to understand the mod-elling of structures under the extreme loadings.
"e modelling of materials and structural behavior underdynamic loading, including blast/shock-induced vibration, impact loading, and seismic actions, is a very challengingtopic with several open questions that need to be addressed inorder to obtain safer structures. "e main reason to promotethe present special issue was to promote a platform to sharethe recent advances that may be beneficial to structural en-gineers, who are facing challenges, when modelling structuresfor analysis and design for extreme loads.
64 papers have been submitted, from which a total of 25papers have been finally selected to integrate the presentissue, which shows the interest and importance of the specialissue topic.
"ere are many severe conditions under which the vi-bration occurs under short duration impact loads withinmilliseconds of time history response such as falling-weightimpact loading and rock fall on structures. "e impact withvery high response such as blast and shock vibration impacton structures of various types within microseconds havebeen added. Eight papers are focused on shock and blast instructures, and the topics covered are related with the re-sponse of building structural elements, as well as the effectsin special infrastructures.
Eleven papers were submitted related to pure dynamicand vibration modelling strategies.
Since the last century, many developments have beenmade in understanding the seismic demand on structuresdue to earthquake-induced ground motions and structureresponse under dynamically varying loads. However, ob-servations from the recent past earthquakes have dem-onstrated that structures designed to modern codes ofpractice and guidelines have not performed up to theexpectations in reducing losses due to earthquakes. Fur-thermore, the recent earthquakes have demonstrated thatthe vulnerability of deficient; that is, noncomplaint, structures is higher than the previously known. All theseare pointing to the growing interest in tools for modellingof structures under earthquake loading, to accurately ac-count for the possible damage mechanisms and their im-plication on the structure response under earthquakes of

varying intensity, for example, frequent earthquakes, rareearthquakes, and very rare earthquake. With the ad-vancement of experimental database, it is possible to test, validate, and calibrate tools for structure modelling andanalysis, which can be in turn used both in research andpractice. Six papers are focused in the study of earthquakeimpact in structures and infrastructures. In fact, the topicsin several cases cross the boundaries mixing the advanceddynamic methods to study the seismic effects on structuresor combining different hydrodynamic loads with the effectsof earthquakes, and only with the proper advanced nu-merical strategies will be possible to have an accurate as-sessment of the structural behaviour.
"e editorial team is sure that the papers reflect sig-nificant researches and developments the different topicsaddressed. We hope that readers will find all articles of thespecial issue useful and exciting and that the articles willstimulate further research activities in the area of damageassessment.
