MODEL UN LUMNI N - ODU - Old Dominion University
Transcript of MODEL UN LUMNI N - ODU - Old Dominion University
Come along! The
annual New York
trip is the Model
UN’s biggest non-
simulation activi-
ty. We send thirty
students to the
United Nations for
briefings on the
role of the UN in disarmament and peacekeeping, and visit
with country missions, this year including Iran, Turkey and
the United States. There is enough free time for your own
diversions. The group travels by charter bus, leaving Sun-
day 14 October and returning late Tuesday 16 October.
How long you stay is up to you. You can travel and stay
with the group or make your own arrangements. If interest-
ed, contact Alan Rogers at [email protected] by October 5.

ODUMUN Alumni Event, 16 February 2013ODUMUN Alumni Event, 16 February 2013ODUMUN Alumni Event, 16 February 2013 The 2012 alumni reception for our 35th anniversary was an amazing success. We don’t want to
stop. We welcome you to the annual conference in February 2013 for the alumni reception and
dinner, Friday 15 February at the Sheraton Waterside in Norfolk. The dinner is free to alumni,
courtesy of financial support from the College of Arts and Letters. This is a smaller event.
Seating is limited. To reserve, contact Alan at [email protected] and 757-683-5933.
Matching
Matching Gifts. We are de-
lighted that Dawn Serafine
(Class of 1989) has pledged
to match every gift or pledge
up to $5,000 in all. With
your support and her match-
ing funds, Model UN will be
able to provide major schol-
arships for student leaders.
Your support will reward
our hardest working stu-
dents, facilitating participa-
tion regardless of their finan-
cial situation.
Long-Term Goal
Endowment for Model UN Schol-
arships. Serving as Secretary-
General of the ODU Model UN
conference is full-time. Our Presi-
dent and USGs work just as hard.
Like you did, they do it because
they love it. They greatly deserve
scholarship support. But this re-
quires an endowment, our highest
financial goal. A yield of $3,000
annually for scholarships to stu-
dents serving in these vital roles
requires an endowment of roughly
$70,000.
Short-Term Goal
Scholarships for Conference
attendance. Every year we
send 120 students to roughly
six events, from the New
York trip to crisis simula-
tion conferences. The $150
trip fee is a serious barrier
for many students. Help us
create an annual fund of
$2,000 to ease the financial
burdens and maximize stu-
dent participation in out-of-
town events.

Stay in TouchStay in TouchStay in Touch
Connect with friends on the ODUMUN
Alumni Facebook page. Post your pic-
tures; be sure to add explanatory captions
for those of us who weren’t there.
Share: If you know other MUN alumni
who might not be on our contact list, for-
ward this invitation and let us know. We
are compiling a photographic record of
your Society and MUN experiences. You
can help us tremendously by sharing your
pictures and background stories on Face-
book or by sending to [email protected].
Send us a line to update your contact info,
especially for surface mailings. Even if we
have your current e-mail address, we do not
have post addresses for most alumni. To up-
date your info, register and update your entry
with the ODU Alumni Association’s Lion’s
Den at www.odualumni.org or with us at
Alumni Book Project
It is our pleasure to thank everyone who sent us
a memoir of your MUN experience or an article
about what the program meant to you. We have
collected a lot of tales from 35 years of MUN
history and even more about where it led people
after. We are in the process of editing these into
a book to be printed and made available to all
ODU MUN alumni. Meant to contribute but
never got around to it? Don’t keep your memo-
ries to yourself. It is not too late to submit a
memoir. Contact Aaron Karp at [email protected]
