In order to reduce accidents and enhance the safe operation of mowers, Alamo Group Ag Division, incooperation with other industry manufacturers has developed the AEM/FEMA Industrial and AgriculturalMower Safety Practices video and guide book.

The video will familiarize and instruct mower-tractor operators in safe practices when using industrial andagricultural mowing equipment. It is important that Every Mower Operator be educated in the operation oftheir mowing equipment and be able to recognize the potential hazards that can occur while operating amower. This video, along with the mower operator’s manual and the warning messages on the mower, willsignificantly assist in this important education.

Your Authorized Alamo Ag Dealer may have shown this video and presented you a DVD Video when youpurchased your mower. If you or any mower operator have not seen this video, Watch the Video, Readthis Operator’s Manual, and Complete the Video Guidebook before operating your new mower. If youdo not understand any of the instructions included in the video or operator’s manual or if you have anyquestions concerning safety of operation, contact your supervisor, dealer or Alamo Group Ag.

If you would like a VHS video tape of the video, please email [email protected] or Fax AEMVHS Video at (830) 372-9529 or mail in a completed copy of the form on the back of this page to AEMVHS Video 1502 E Walnut Street, Seguin, TX 78155. and request the VHS video version. WARNING! Transport only at safe speeds. Serious accidents and injuries canresult from operating this equipment at unsafe speeds. Understandthe Tractor and Implement and how it handles before transporting onstreets and highways. Make sure the Tractor steering and brakes arein good condition and operate properly.

Before transporting the Tractor and Implement, determine the safetransport speeds for you and the equipment. Make sure you abideby the following rules:

Be aware of the operating conditions. Do not operate the Tractor withweak or faulty brakes. When operating down a hill or on wet or rainslick roads, the braking distance increases: use extreme care andreduce your speed. When operating in traffic always use the Tractor’sflashing warning lights and reduce your speed. Be aware of trafficaround you and watch out for the other guy. (SG-19)

2. Test the equipment at a slow speed in turns. Increase the speedthrough the turn only after you determine that it is safe to operateat a higher speed. Use extreme care and reduce your speed whenturning sharply to prevent the tractor and implement from turningover. Determine the maximum safe turning speed for you and thisequipment before operating on roads or uneven ground.

3. Only transport the Tractor and Implement at the speeds that youhave determined are safe and which allow you to properly controlthe equipment.

1. Test the tractor at a slow speed and increase the speed slowly.Apply the Brakes smoothly to determine the stopping characteristicsof the Tractor and Implement. As you increase the speed of theTractor the stopping distance increases. Determine the maximumsafe transport speed for you and this Equipment.

CAUTION! PROLONGED EXPOSURE TO LOUD NOISE MAY CAUSEPERMANENT HEARING LOSS! Tractors with or without anImplement attached can often be noisy enough to causepermanent hearing loss. We recommend that you always wearhearing protection if the noise in the Operator’s position exceeds80db. Noise over 85db over an extended period of time will causesevere hearing loss. Noise over 90db adjacent to the Operatorover an extended period of time will cause permanent or totalhearing loss. Note: Hearing loss from loud noise [from tractors, chain saws, radios, and other such sources close to the ear] iscumulative over a lifetime without hope of natural recovery. (SG-I7)

WARNING! Never attempt to lubricate, adjust, or remove material from the Implement while it is inmotion or while tractor engine is running. Make sure the tractor engine is off before workingon the Implement. (SG-20)

INTRODUCTION

Introduction Section 2-2

© 2004 Alamo Group Inc.1475,1875 09/01

Your new Earthmaster is designed with two tillage tools, a tandem disc and a V-Chisel connected together asone unit for one-pass operation even in standing corn stalks. Also, the two tools can be separated from eachother to be used as a tandem disc only or a 3-point hitch mounted V-Chisel plow.

The V-Chisel bar design places the chisel shanks behind each other to allow crop residue to flow between andaround them. The 36" tall parabolic design chisel shank will penetrate the soil up to 15" deep to get under thehard plow sole-lifting, shattering and breaking it up with the least amount of power required. This allows thesurface water to penetrate deeper into the soil, but most of all it allows your crop roots to penetrate deeper intothe soil to use the valuable moisture and fertilizer all season long and even during a dry season.

It is extremely important the Earthmaster operate level ( disc and chisel ) at all times. This will Minimize thehorsepower requirements and allow the best flow of soil and residue through the machine.

In cornstalks and other rowed crops, operate at a slight angle to the row. This allows better trash flow andassures the shanks will not constantly operate on a row or between rows.

The V-Chisel bar is also designed to fit on your Category ll or lll tractor 3-point hitch to use as a deep chisel toolin your fields with light amounts of crop residue. If optional coulters are installed in front of each chisel shank itcan be used in fields with heavy amounts of crop residue.

PREPARING EARTHMASTER FOR OPERATION

Have a tractor with sufficient horsepower and traction. Soil type, soil moisture, type of crop, depth of opera-tion, ect., will determine horsepower and traction requirements. Normally, 25 to 35 horsepower per shank isrequired. Have your tractor adequately equipped to operate at speeds of 4 1/2 MPH to 6 MPH as this speedwill provide the best results.

CONNECTING CHISEL BAR TO DISC

1. Connect the toggle hitch bars of the disc unit in the top holes of the outer hitch plates of the chisel bar.

2. Connect the adjusting screw link in the top hole of the center hitch plates of the chisel bar.

DISC DEPTH SETTING

IMPORTANT: Do not remove the fixed depth stop pin. This pin is held in place by two roll pins. See Illustrationbelow.

1. Set the disc depth by removing the depth control pins or by placing them in one of the following holes.

NOTE: There is one pin on each side. Both pins must be placed in the same hole location on both sides.

CHISEL DEPTH SETTING

1. Set the chisel depth by installing the stop pins ( one on each side of toggle hitch bar ) in one of the followinghole locations.

NOTE: Hitch bar on both sides must be set at the same position. 12345

9"10-1/2"12"13-1/2"15"

HOLE NO. CHISEL DEPTH

NOTE: All dimensions are based on a disc setting of 5" depth. All dimensions are approximate because ofvariations in tire compaction in different soils.

2. To change the chisel bar to a deeper depth:

Lower the Earthmaster all the way with the chisel points setting on top of the ground. This will free the bottompins. Remove them and install them in a lower hole. Align the pin so the toggle hitch bar will rest on the pin'sflat surface.

Raise the Earthmaster all the way with the chisel points off the ground. This will place the toggle hitch barsresting on the bottom pins. Remove the top pins and install them in the hole at the top of the toggle hitch bar.

3. To change the chisel bar to a shallower depth:

Raise the Earthmaster all the way with the chisel points off the ground. This will free the top pins. Removethem and install them in a higher hole. Align the pin so the toggle hitch bar will rest on the pin's flat surface.

Lower the Earthmaster all the way with the chisel points setting on top of the ground. This will place the togglehitch bars resting on the top pins. Remove the bottom pins and install them in the hole at the bottom of thetoggle hitch bar.

DISC FRAME LEVELING

1. After entering the field and with the disc in the ground, level the disc frame to the ground by turning the screwlink connecting the tongue and frame. With disc frame level, both front and rear disc blades will be cutting thesame depth.

NOTE: You may have to release the oil pressure in the tongue cylinder before you can turn it's rod.

CHISEL BAR LEVELING

1. After entering the field and with the chisels in the ground, level the chisel bar with the ground by adjusting thetop screw link connecting the chisel bar to the disc frame. A 1 1/4" wrench placed between the two sections onthe rod will allow you to adjust this link. Tighten the set screw to keep the screw link from turning. Always runthe chisel bar level with the ground, this will place all chisels at the same depth. The chisel will also pull easierwhen running level.

NOTE: After making any chisel depth adjustments, the chisel bar must be releveled.

When the Earthmaster is lowered into the ground, the chisel shanks may start cutting before the disc gangs canbegin cutting stalks. This may result in uncut stalks wrapping around the shanks. This can be prevented bykeeping the tongue cylinder in the lowered position during field operation.

Page 27: MODEL 1475 & 1875 - EarthMaster | Supportsupport.earthmastertillage.com/manuals/operator/4740WC... · 2005. 5. 3. · 1475 & 1875 EARTHMASTER Published 09-01 Part No. 4740WC OPERATOR'S

DISC GANG ANGLE SETTING

1. The disc gangs can be set at one of three different angle positions.

NOTE: Each disc gang has one 15 1/4" U-bolt fastening the gang to the wing extension. THESE U-BOLTSARE TO BE USED ONLY WHEN ADJUSTING THE ANGLE OF THE DISCGANG! The U-bolt are not designedto carry disc gang weight during field operation.

2. Start with the disc gangs at the center angle position. At this angle position, the disc blades will throw the soilto incorporate most crop residues with the soil. If more crop residue incorporation is desired, position the discgangs at the greatest angle position. If less crop residue incorporation is desired, position the disc gangs at theleast angle position.

NOTE: The disc cutting depth will also vary the amount of crop residue incorporated with the soil. The deeperthe cutting depth, the more soil moved and the more incorporation. The shallower the cutting depth, the lesssoil moved and the less incorporation.

CHISEL TRIP SHANKS

1. Your Earthmaster may be equipped with manual reset or automatic reset shanks.

2. If equipped with manual reset shanks and they hit a rock or obstruction and trip, you will have to stop, raisethe Earthmaster part of the way up and back up to reset the shank. The Earthmaster is shipped with one short, one medium and one long leaf spring installed (See page 29). To increase the force required to trip the shank, add one item 20 (order no. 2437423) below the factory installed springs and operate the machine substantiallybefore making further additions. Shank damage could occur if a total of 5 leaf springs are installed and a solidobject is encountered by the shank.

3. If equipped with automatic reset shanks and they hit a rock or obstruction and trip, they will automatically tripup and over the obstruction and automatically go back into the ground by themselves without stopping. Toincrease the force required to trip the shank, remove item 24 (order no. 2431106. See page 31).

4. The chisel points are reversible. When one end wears off, remove the pin and turn the point around using thenew end. If the points are allowed to wear past the tip of the shank, the shanks will not pull into the ground.Replace worn points before this occurs.
