    1.1 Background of the

    StudyThe mode of transportation in Catanduanes

    has been fast evolving in the recent years.

    A few years ago, the yet under-developedCircumferential Road Phase I connectingthe capital town of Virac to the North byway of San Miguel-Viga national roads

    only serviced jeeps and buses whichcarries the riding public commonlystudents.

    One area of study is the fifth classmunicipality of Bagamanoc bounded on theeastern side by the Pacific Ocean,on the northwestern side by themunicipality of Pandan, western side by themunicipality of Caramoran, and on thesouth by the municipality of Panganiban.

    The municipality of Panganiban (Payo), afifth class municipality with a 2010population census of 9,738 people.

    Situated on the northern part of

    Catanduanes, eastern part facing thePacific Ocean. It is bounded on the northby the municipality of Bagamanoc, on thesouth by the municipality of Viga, and on

    the west by the municipality of Caramoran(en.wikipedia.org).

    Last area for study is Viga, a 4th

    class municipality in the province havinga 2010 population census of 20,669people.

    Nestled in one of the widest inland plains of

    the island, between three neighboringtowns and the Philippine Sea. To the southis the town of Gigmoto; to the west is thetown of Caramoran. It is about 52kilometers (32 mi) north from the capitaltown of Virac (en.wikipedia.org).

    1.2 Statement of the

    ProblemThe mode of transportation that students

    chose may vary from person to person.Apart from that, the circumstances and

    situations will also greatly influence themode of transportation they prefer. Nomatter what mode have chosen,transportation does play a big role in day

    A more different case could be applied to theoptions students from Northern towns ofViga, Panganiban and Bagamanoc do have.Student commuters may have a couple of

    choices as different types of public vehiclesoffer transport service from these townsgoing to the capital town of Virac.However, these choices do not includeconsiderations for safety.

    1.3 Objectives

    The primary aim of this study is to determine themode preference of student commuters ofeach town of Viga, Panganiban andBagamanoc and determine which factorscause students to choose a specific mode overthe other available options.

    This study will also seek to provide informationas to the mode of transportation available inthe fore stated towns and categorize them asto the level of safety, the time of travel,economy and level of comfort.

    Most importantly, this study aims torecommend to the public vehicleoperators the factors that should beobserved and optimized in order to

    ensure student commuters choice for

    their service and then propose policy andplanning measures that could beimplemented to help foster and encouragethe use of a safe and reasonable modes oftravel.

    1.4 Significance of the Study

    The results of this study will be of more helpand importance to student commuters whocame from the Northern towns of

    Catanduanes. As students cant even

    predict how their preferences varydepending on circumstances, they may noteven think of what mode to choose. Theywill adjust with whatever hey have in handor just borrow to deal with the situation.

    Conclusions that will be derived based on

    this study will provide the studentcommuters a better idea of taking a ridewith full consideration on factors involving

    safety, economy and time.

    It will open up awareness in taking time toconsider what type of vehicle they will

    choose and stick to. This study will give awide perspective of a modern and betterway of riding public vehicles.

    1.5 Scope and Limitations

    The researchers chose to limit their studyand observations to student commuters withspecific routes from the towns of Viga,

    Panganiban and Bagamanoc to the capitaltown of Virac, Province of Catanduanes andvice-versa.

    Respondents will primarily include studentsfrom Catanduanes State University,Catanduanes Colleges and ChristianPolytechnic Institute of Catanduanes.

    Public vehicles which are included in the study

    will be enlisted together with the operator andthe authorized route of travel, whether they areregistered or not. The numbers of operatingvehicles will be used in the analysis of its impact

    to the mode preferences of the respondents.

    Due to a large number of possible respondentstogether with the time constraints and other

    academic obligations of the researchers, theresearchers will limit the number ofrespondents to only sixty students, randomlyselected.

    Mode preferences of students will be

    ranked individually according to towns.

    Vehicular accidents which are inconnection with the study and routecovered will be recorded accordingly butwill not consume a valuable amount ofspace in the analysis and interpretation of

    2.1 Mode of

    TransportMode of transport is a term used to distinguishsubstantially different ways to perform transport.The most dominant modes of transport areaviation, land transport, which includes rail, roadand off-road transport, and ship transport.

    Other modes also exist, including pipelines, cabletransport, and space transport. Human-poweredtransport and animal-powered transport are

    sometimes regarded as their own mode, but thesenormally also fall into the other categories.

    Most dominant modes of transport are aviation,land transport and ship transport.

    For land transport, there is rail transport whichis a means of conveyance of passengers and goods

    by way of wheeled vehicles running on rail track,known as a railway or railroad. Another is roadtransport, an identifiable route in the city or villagecommonly used by the pedestrians, motorcycles,

    automobile, bicycles and trucks.

    2.2 Mode of Transportation off Catandua

    Virac Airport is the only airport serving theisland province of Catanduanes located in Virac.The airport is classified as a Class 2 principal

    (minor domestic) airport by the Civil AviationAuthority of the Philippines, a body of theDepartment of Transportation andCommunications responsible for the operations

    of not only this airport but also of all otherairports in the Philippines except majorinternational airports.

    Daily Ferry services bridge Catanduanes, from thePort of Virac and Port of San Andres, to the mainisland of Luzon, via Tabaco Seaport in Tabaco City,Albay.

    Several ferry companies offer trips at differenthours of the day between the two ports, whichnormally takes about three and a half hours.

    Traveling within Virac or to other destinations inthe province is by local buses, jeepneys, tricycles,pedicabs and UV Express vans.

    The most common road vehicle are vans andbuses in the Northern part of Catanduanesespecially Viga, Payo and Bagamanoc, a wheeled

    passenger vehicle that carries its own motor.Other users of roads include trucks, motorcycles,bicycles and pedestrians.

    The journey to the Northern towns under study

    takes about one and a half hour and costs about 70to 80 Philippine peso. For the shorter distancesinside the town, people make use of bicycles,motorcycles and tricycles.
