What are Modal Verbs?
Modal verbs are a particular type of auxiliary. They are used to add special
elements of meaning to a main verb such as: possibility, obligation, duty,
speculation, ability, permission, prohibition, doubt, politeness, advice etc.
• Possibility: He may be in the library.
You can catch that train at 10:43.
• Obligation/Duty: I must give in my essay today.
Bruno ought to tell the truth.
• Ability: Jessie can speak Korean.
• Speculation: Pedro might be at (in) the hospital..
Neto may love Australia.
Characteristics of Modal Verbs• There are nine main modal verbs: can, could, may, might, must, should, will,
would and shall.
• They act like auxiliaries (e.g. I can go).
• They have no inflections to show agreement or tense (e.g. I can go, He/she/it can
go. The form does not vary (e.g. * He cans go)
• They precede the negative particle not in negative sentence, that is, not comes
immediately after the modal verbs (e.g. I cannot go. You shall not pass!!!!!!!!!!!).
• They come before the subject in yes/no questions (Can you go?).
• They do not have the infinitive form (e.g. * to can, *to may).
• They are followed by the base form (infinitive without to) of the main verb (e.g
He can go, not *He can to go or * He can goes, or *He can went ).
Semi- Modal VerbsSemi-modals are group of words that function like modal verbs: ought to, used to,
be going to, be supposed to, (have) got to, have to, (had) better.
In addition, dare, need, ought to and used to are often called semi-modal because in
some ways they are formed like modal verbs and in some ways they are like other
main verbs.
Like modal verbs, ought to and used to do not change form for person. Needn’t
and daren’t do not have a third person -s in the present:
•It used to be so easy. It ought to be easy now.
•She needn’t worry.
•John daren’t tell Ruth about the accident.
Semi- Modal VerbsLike main verbs, the negative form of need, dare and used to is made by using do.
But it can also be made without using do (like modal verbs).
Like main verbs, the question form for need, dare and used to is made by using
do:
Does she need to get a camera before she goes away?
Did you use to play football when you were a child?
CAN/COULD(BE ABLE TO)Can, could and be able to are

Pronunciation(Can/Can’t) Can is usually obscured or weakened, but is given its
clear pronunciation whenever they receive sentence
stress: that is, at the end of a sentence or in a tag
question (Prator):
Who can /kən/ go? John can /kæn/.
Can has the added feature of being pronounced with
/æ/, rather than /ə/, in the contraction can’t:
I can’t tell you /aɪ kænt tel ju/.
Since the final /t/, as normally pronounced in a
combination like can’t tell, is nearly impossible to
hear, a person listening to the sentence would
understand it as negative or affirmative depending
on whether he heard /æ/ (can’t) or /ə/ (can). The
weakening of vowels can indeed affect meaning! If
you fail to obscure the a if can in I can tell you, you
may be understood to say precisely the opposite of
what you intended.
