The Pensacola Blue Wa-hoos are teaming up with Sacred Heart Hospital and Marcus Pointe Baptist Church to present Pen-sacola’s first-ever Blue Wahoos Winter Wonder-land at the Bayfront Sta-dium at Maritime Park. Transforming the Blue Wahoos’ home stadium into a Holiday theme park, the Winter Wonder-land features a 110’ ice skating rink, a 90’ long toboggan run, a 60’ tall Christmas tree, hayrides around the Maritime Park, and plenty of holi-day music, vendors, and holiday-inspired food. The five-week extrava-ganza kicks off at sun-down on the evening of Friday, November 23rd, with a free community

event hosted by WEAR3’s Sue Straughn. This event will feature a Grand Il-lumination of the giant Christmas tree by Mayor Ashton Hayward. The tree is generously on loan from Sacred Heart Hos-pital while construction continues at the hospi-tal’s 9th Avenue campus. Following the Grand Il-lumination, there will be special musical perfor-mances and prize win-ning games, including an opportunity for a chance to win a new car from Kia Auto Sport. The evening will conclude with a spec-tacular holiday-themed

These grants are offered for the sole purpose of al-leviating travel expenses and should serve as a

The field is set for the eighth annual presentation of the Wuerffel Trophy, the national award handed out by the All Sports As-sociation that honors the college football player who best com-bines exemplary community service with outstanding aca-demic and athletic achievement. The finalists for the award, which is named after former Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel, a Fort Walton Beach High grad who led the Florida Gators to the 1996 National Championship, were announced

today by the All Sports Association. Fi-nalists for the 2012 trophy include BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, Central Mich-igan wide receiver Cody Wilson, Florida State kicker Dustin Hopkins, Georgia QB Aaron Murray, Kentucky center Matt Smith, Ohio State punter Ben Buchanan, Oklahoma offensive lineman Gabe Ikard and USC quarter-back Matt Barkley. A committee that includes the Wuerffel Trophy national directors, selection com-mittee members and past winners will vote on finalists later this month, and the win-ner will be formally announced Dec. 4. “It seems like every year the bios of these young men get more and more amazing,” said Wuerffel, who played six years in the National Football League and has received national recognition for his humanitarian and community service efforts with Desire Street Ministries in New Orleans and around the country. “I continue to be encouraged by all the

things these guys do to serve others.” Past winners of the award include former Heisman winner Tim Tebow of Florida; defensive end Sam Acho of Texas; and last year’s win-ner, offen-sive lineman Barrett Jones of Alabama. “The All Sports Association member-ship is honored to recognize the 2012 Wuerffel Trophy finalists and nominees,” said All Sports presi-dent Chad Hamil-ton. “These student-athletes embody the Wuerffel Trophy traits of service, char-acter, and excellence; and they are out-standing ambassadors for college football. The 2012 Wuerffel Trophy will be presented to the winner at the All Sports Association’s 44th annual awards banquet on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013.
