HumDrum AmDram was formed in 1992 with three main aims: to improve the performance skills of it s memhers. to portray well-known piece s in a new light and to bring und er-pcrJ'ormed works into Ports mouth City. MORY DICK! was first pieced toge ther in 1983 and was little more than the finale song "Save the Whale ". Ovcr the next six years the s how - in var ious fonns - was perforJl1ed several timcs until it was taken Oil hy Cameron Mackintosh Ltd in 1991 and performed at the Old Fire Station , Oxford. In 1992 it finally played the West End to wildly enthw;iastic audiences and pure vitriol from the critics. Th e show follows Herman Melville's hero, Ishmael, .Illd his cannibal friend Queequeg as they join Captain Ahab's doomed fi[wl whaling voyage. It could he argued that a musical version of one of America 's greatest no ve l would be in poor taste - to set Moby Dick to music heavily influe nced by 80s pop is perhaps unforgivable - until the blame is placed squarely on the of an unruly and financially emharrassed all-girl s' sc hool . St Godley's Academy for Young Ladies. Thi s simple device provides flexibility in the staging. New members arc generally encouraged to meet the existing cust and crew beforehand and are usually asked to work backstage during a production heforc being cast. In this way they arc introduced to our resident di rectors and choreographer and can discuss their aspirations and previous ex perience. Before a s how goes into rehear sal the artistic team will discu ss their cas ting requirements and make pre liminary deci siuns. Sometimes a single three- ho ur workshop is used to cove r various aspects of stagecraft with the entire cast before the casting is finali sed and the rchearsal proce ss com mences. As a group we ar e determ in ed to work as an ensemble - cast lists are presented alphabetically (and not "in order ofimportance"l) and everyone is expected to help in the clearing of the venue once the run is over. HumDrum ha s used the Ncw Theatre Royal for fi ve musical presentations. Built on the site of Port smo uth's Theatre Royal in IX 84, th e New Theatre Royal was exten sively renovated in 1900. Finally closing in 1966. the building remained e mpt y a nd was destroyed by fire in 1972 - with only the auditorium saved. Purc hased by the New Theatre Royal Tru st in 1980. the building IS undergo ing slow renovation. What is offered to the hirer is a "temporary" thru st built in front of the proscenium arch in the stalls. It has no t1ies, no li ghting bars. no wings. no pit, no traps and no rca r access. All entrances and exits must be via the old public ex it s at the rront of the stalls, and the enst can almost touch the front row of the Ore s Circle. It is a ni g htmare - but a challenge I A young theatre company cannot afford a largc professional stage -band , HumDrum ha s taken a stand with theatrical licenso rs over the use of pre- arranged music, pre se nted through an electronic mu sie wo rkstation. BACKG~OUND HumDrum AmDram was formed

in 1992 with three main aims to

We built a ra i ~ed wal kway from one of the stagc- leC boxes which ran the full width of the stage giving two performance leve ls A cent ra l staircase gave ~ tagc access from the walk way and comhined with the two reg ul ar entrances stagc left and ri g ht we employed two sets of stcps at the front of the thrust to pro vide five entrances in all
