Building digital capacity for the arts - seminar 1 Mobile applications, apps and appiness Mark Bamber, Trainer, BBC Academy A review of apps which will look at some of the emerging smart-phones and tablet apps that are coming onto the market as well as audience expectations, commissioning processes and business models BBC Academy and Arts Council England have joined forces to offer training and guidance to the arts sector across England on how to maximize the creation and distribution of high quality arts content for audiences on digital platforms, including online, mobile and internet protocol television. The Building Digital Capacity for the Arts programme, announced in September 2010, will support the development of the arts sector's media production skills by bringing together the BBC Academy's media and digital experience with the Arts Council's extensive knowledge of the arts sector. The initial programme runs from March 2011 - August 2012 and will consist of a launch event, practical seminars, an online guide to commissioning, facilitated masterclasses and an online resource of filmed and streamed content. 18m UK Smartphone Users (37% of all UK mobile users aged 13+)

23m (half UK adult population) are using mobile internet, including mobile apps.

By 2015, 75% of the UK population will own a smart phone and tablets will reach 50% penetration.

Within the next five years, more users will connect to the Internet over mobile devices than desktop PCs.

By 2012 the mobile internet market will be twice the size of desktop, and by 2013 mobiles will replace PCs as the primary means by which people access the internet.

What is a mobile app?• A mobile app is a BBC product delivered through a mobile app store.

There are two types of BBC mobile apps:

Enduring apps– Enduring propositions that have an indefinite lifespan that the

audience expects from the BBC (BBC pillar products: News, Sport & iPlayer for UK)

Topical app• A proposition that delivers significant reach and impact with a defined

lifespan (Glastonbury, Dr Who, WorldCup).
