'the top five barriers to increased use of mobile devices in your place of work’ ???

comments on post-it notes please

Myth busting – fears/assumptions found to be unfounded or exaggerated

• mobile technologies inappropriate/too difficult for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities

• all young people automatically understand new technology and require no training

• Allowing mobile technologies (especially phones) in colleges/schools = difficult for teachers to control classes and inappropriate behaviour

• Giving expensive, portable kit to young or disadvantaged learners will = damage, loss & theft

nationally <2% lost/stolen/broken in Phase one

nationally <1% lost/stolen/broken in Phase two

Trust + clear rules and expectations + interesting lessons the keys to behaviour management success

October 2009

a Bangkok-based web

portal - market focus is

Indians living in

Thailand.

Accessing unsuitable material

If students:

• use our filtered wi-fi connection, they are as safe as on a college computer

• want to use their 3G or GPRS connection there isn’t much we can do, other than if we find out they are in breach of the AUP

Digital divide - is it fair?• not all students have mobile devices, and the quantity

and quality of devices varies• we don’t set bringing a device as an expectation just

an option• there are enough devices in student ownership not to

ignore them• Paul Haigh, Assistant Headteacher at Notre Dame

estimates a potential £750,000 worth of student -owned hardware is in his school on a daily basis ……. for a College sum is higher …… Sheffield College has over 22,000 learners (over 36,000 enrolments)…… if 20,000 have a mobile phone, costing an average £100 => £2,000,000 worth of hardware ……

is this radical? - No

• shifting the emphasis from outlawing the devices students own to outlawing the way a minority of students use them

• Schools/Colleges are falling behind what is normal use of technology for everyone - we deal with the future of people, we should be leading the way

• about opening the door to allow Teaching and Learning to evolve in a 21st C environment

'the top five changes you want in order to increase the use of mobile devices in your place of work’ ???

Total number - increasing

Number of College provided devices (IT Systems) – initially increasing, but then decreasing

Number of student owned devices used for learning within the College – increasing

Cross-over point – 2012?

The future???College becomes more of a provider of connectivity

College owned fixed device

College owned mobile device

Learner OwnedDevices

College Internet Services

Internet

No restriction from college

regarding access Some control in place

Log-on process occurs to gain

both System and Internet access. Internet access

may be restricted.

Possibility of some restriction if device

is controlledin some way

Connectivity Issues

Possibly through: ‘free’ wi-fi access (eg.Starbucks)

‘home’ Internet Service provider (ISP)3G connection via phone network
