President’s Message:

What is your pocket speech? Yes, I have a pocket speech. Wait, what is a pocket speech? Toastmaster’s International members are instructed to have a pocket speech ready at all times. A pocket speech is simply a speech you are prepared to give with only a moment’s notice. When you are called on to make a speech in five minutes, there are two things you can do: You can tell the person you can’t do it. Or you can take the job and do your best. After all, REALTORS® need to think on our feet and we should be well-knowledge about the subject. All REALTORS® should have a pocket speech. What should you say? When would you use? Suppose you’re in the grocery store and waiting in line to check-out, behind you overhear a couple discussing if they should place their house on their market. Are you prepared to turn-around, introduce yourself and give reasons why they should give you the opportunity? That is a pocket speech. Scenario #2 but this time a couple is discussing purchasing their first home. Again are you prepared with reasons why they should give you the opportunity to work with you?

Remember, a pocket speech needs to be appealing. You may have only one opportunity to get that appointment so make an impact. Make it sharp and positive.

Just as REALTORS® need to be prepared with a “why use you” pocket speech, CRS members need to be prepared for opportunities when anyone inquires why should I join CRS? Will a CRS designation increase my business? How? Some tips to remember: Prepare. Preparation can help or hinder your delivery. While too much preparation can lead to a speech that will overwhelm the audience, too little preparation can leave a speaker overwhelmed. As with everything in life, the key to speech preparation is moderation. There are two parts to this tip: practice and practice. Write out your talking points to feel ready. You want to craft your speech so there is a clear beginning, middle and end. Limit the “I’m best’ or I’ll work harder for you …”. Even if you are the best nobody will believe you. Make sure your speech is interlaced by a cohesive message or story. When rehearsing your speech, practice it just enough so there will be some spontaneity in your final delivery. Although everyone has a different answer for the magic number of practice hours it takes to deliver a perfect speech, you should practice until you can pick yourself up after stumbling during your speech; yet do not practice so much that you can recite every single word in your speech verbatim. Practice until “It is like a door opens and all the words just fly out of our brain.”

Relax. I know you hear this all the time: Just relax, have fun and you will do fine. There is real science behind this statement. There is a primal part that activates a fight-or-flight tendency. When we are stressed out, that tendency kicks into overdrive. The rational part of your brain must engage your knowledge as best it can when you are in this overdrive state. Therefore, try to remain as calm as possible so the rational part of your brain can kick into action and enable your presentation to go as planned. If you are able to relax, you may even enjoy being in the moment. December is my last month as President of MN-CRS. The December MN-CRS Board of Directors meeting I hand-off responsibilities and challenges to Eric Kodner and his team. Eric was Wisconsin chapter president and will be an excellent president for Minnesota. 2015 will be a challenging transition year for Eric and his team with the proposed reforms of CRS. I know you’ll provide support and patience. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you as your president during 2014. Thomas Slupske MN CRS Chapter President 2014

MN CRS Chapter – Steve Stewart, CRS Why do I renew my designation each year?

My goal in real estate has always been to find success, and to continue to raise the bar each year. Once I earned my CRS designation, I knew that I had discovered the best pathway to success and beyond. The return on investment from a financial perspective is incredible. My annual dues to the Council and the Chapter have become the most important, impactful, and effective use of money in my tight ( frugal) budget. Membership entitles me to meet, work with, learn from, network with, and share ideas with some of the top real estate agents in the state and in the country. I have discovered that the more I put into these areas in terms of time and energy, the more I get back. I also have the opportunity to be part of an extensive, effective, and successful referral network involving top agents and quality referrals from around the country. Education is the cornerstone of the CRS designation. Meeting with and learning from some of the finest real estate instructors in the country, and benefiting from top quality webinars and relevant courses has been a great benefit to me in my career. The CRS designation has helped me to get listings (especially in competitive situations) and give me more credibility with my clients. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, membership in the CRS family is priceless. The friendships, support, encouragement, resources, and camaraderie help me to stay on track, to stay confident and positive, and to continue my goal toward a higher degree of success in my real estate career. Why do I renew my CRS membership each year? I hope it's obvious, but if it's not, let's get together for a cup of coffee, and we can talk. Steve Stewart, CRS Past President MInnesota CRS Chapter (2012) CRS Region 13 Vice President (2014, 2015)
