Tom’s Story

Tom was in year 10 He was always in trouble at school and at home

and had decided leave both He was really interested in cars Tom was provided with a mentor, through LLEN,

from a local auto repair shop They discussed Tom’s interests and worked to

build his skills to gain work Tom to apply for some work experience at the

auto repairers They offered him an apprenticeship if he

continued at school to complete year 10 He got his apprenticeship, and is doing really well

Our YMAP Program

Youth Mentoring Assistance Program (YMAP) specialises in facilitating partnerships that will improve outcomes for 15–19 year olds in our region

Why is this important?

Youth unemployment can be as high as 57% in our region (ABS)

Our schools report some of the highest levels of disadvantage in Victoria (SFO)

Large numbers of our youth qualify for Youth Allowance (Centrelink)

What makes us different

We invest in the individual: We see improvements to achievement, life skills, personal development and social skills as essential means to an end

We focus on long term sustainable change: that targets increased participation in education, training and employment

Retention Strategy is crucial: YMAP is a retention strategy to provide youth with these skills

Context is key: All of our work is designed to meet the needs of young people and the community in which they live – including local industry

M AA Special EventsOur Activity

YMAP has serviced 173 young people across the region in 2007, all of whom were deemed to be ‘at risk’.

We have a total of 120 volunteer mentors involved: In 2007 we recruited and trained 57 new mentors; Of the 57 volunteers 22 were males and 35 were females; The student/mentor ratios were 1.56 young people per mentor.

Overall attendance at mentoring sessions in 2007 was 79.3% when the overall school attendance rate by the same 173 students was just 69.4%

connected and increases their confidence to deal with life’s adversities. Every school should have mentoring. It’s FABULOUS!”

Key Performance Indicators:

Increased retention in education, training and employment

As a direct result of being involved in the YMAP Program: 78% transitioned to VCE - all of these young people had intended to

leave school 23% negotiated the work experience component of their studies 10% of designated secondary school ‘exit’ students enrolled for further

education, mostly at a TAFE level 4% were offered immediate employment opportunities 91% was the maximum class attendance rate, well above the overall

student rate of 86%

We are seeking a partner to assist us to raise funds through an annual event that becomes

synonymous with YMAP

We want to develop an event that will:

Capture the imagination and support of the corporate sector as well as community and providers

Involve young people in its’ design, development and implementation.

We need a partner to:

Provide a donation towards the estimated $10,000 event cost Work with young people to develop and implement the event

Provide 5 employees to mentor students Share design, marketing and event management skills Approx 2 hrs per week for 10 weeks

Risk Control measuresFinancial stability The LLENs are currently funded till 2011, we will ensure

that we continue to support YMAP within this timeframe. If we have sufficient funds to continue the program beyond our contract with DEECD, as an incorporated association, we will do this.

Ability to maintain partnerships

The M&MV LLEN COM is committed to its partners and will maintain these relationships, building on the strengths that now exist within them.

Operational and legal We ensure that all aspects of our program have rigorous policies established – including OH&S, public liability, Working with Children, volunteer, partnerships and staffing

We will ensure that a staff member will manage the partnership.
