Notes from the NuNda Village BoardFall Safety Tips – Part 1
Autumn is a busy and beautiful time of year, but it also can be deadly. To simplify home safety measures this season, the Nunda Police Department offers the following fall safety tips: GET A SENSOR: During cold weather, your furnace will be running and your windows will be closed, so you should install a carbon monoxide detector near your home’s bedrooms.SERVICE FURNACE: Before the heating season, a qualified heating tech-nician should service your furnace to ensure that it will operate safely and efficiently.THE CHIMNEY: Inspect your chimney to make sure it is unobstructed. Because many furnaces vent into the chimney, it must be free of debris to allow products of combustion to vent to the outside atmosphere. If you will be burning wood in a fireplace, have the chimney inspected to make sure it is in good condition and free of creosote buildup.* Reminder: Last Brush Pick-Up Day is October 2nd – Please adhere to the rules! Place brush in separate piles at curb by 8 a.m. Brush can be no longer than 5 ft. and should be piled parallel with the curb, with cut ends all in the same direction.

SPEAK OUT
The above articles are editorial opinions and do not necessarily represent the views of the Mount Morris Shopper, its management
and staff, or the Mount Morris Shopper advertisers.
Dear “Speak Out”, So often you publish letters, ads, and dates of our events in your publication. And we are most appreciative because in doing so it helps to inform our community that our Auxiliary is active in our community, as well as being a support system to our Heroes, the Veterans of Boyd Parker VFW, Post 547. But we Ladies also do many activities that are mostly known only to our members and our fellow Auxiliary Sisters in Our District. Among these activities are the yearly gifting to meet some of the needs of each of the children who live at the School for the Blind in Batavia; yearly providing items and helping hands to the Veterans in the VA Hospital in Batavia so that can enjoy a picnic outside on the grounds; taking magazines to the Hospital every two months; continuous sup-port of the Poppy Sale; sending items during the holidays to the VA Hospital to supplement gift basket put together by the staff for our resident Vets; teaching Flag etiquette to our local Kindergarten classes - awarding them certificates and color-ing books and stickers for knowing the Pledge and it’s mean-ing; offering scholarship opportunities to the older students; preparing refreshments for all who attend our community’s Parades; working all the VFW dinners as well as the weekly Bingo games. And this just scratches the surface. To accomplish all these many events each of our members heads a very active committee. One of the committees near and dear to all our members hearts is our Cancer Awareness Committee. We have lost Sisters to this diseases; we have Sisters and family members and friends who have fought and won, or fought and sadly lost, or are still fighting against this demon. We know, like each of us, there is not one of you who has not been affected at some level by the ugliness of Cancer, other critical diseases, life threatening accidents or even routine op-erations - any of which can and has required the GIFT OF LIFE. Worse than tragic would be if there was not any blood source availability when you or your loved one was faced by such a medical crisis - be it platelets, plasma or whole blood that was needed. And it really is such a simple fix....quite simply an hour of time needed to donate. Because our VFW is used for our community blood drives that are run by the Rochester Red Cross we are aware of the number of people who support these drives. As well as the critically important need for these drives to be successful. We also know that in October the Blood Bank in Rochester is of-ten in crisis due to the lack of donations that month. Because of this we have joined with the Red Cross to try to make this October’s drive the most successful drive ever while making those in attendance more aware of the Cancers highlighted in the months of September: childhood cancer, prostate, leuke-mia/lymphoma, and ovarian cancer; and breast cancer which is the focus for October. Obviously we cannot do this without the support of our friends and neighbors. To that end we are humbly asking each of you to please mark your calendars and attend this month’s Blood Drive. It will be held at the VFW, 3 Elm Street, Mount Morris from 1:00 PM to 6 PM on Friday, October 11th. The Red Cross is in need of all blood types. Donate in honor or memory of a loved one by giving the most precious gift of life to one who may be battling the same condition of your loved one. In addition to this you will have the opportunity to: gift your loose change to help fight these highlighted cancers (if you so wish); hear a guest speaker from Koman Kares at 2 PM( join us even if you just want to be more educated and not donate); and be served a special homemade cookie and juice. The Ladies will be happy to offer a hand to hold if you have never donated before and/or are a bit unsure..it truly is an easy process. We thank you in advance for showing your support to our Ladies’ Auxiliary while giving the most precious of gifts - the gift of life. May God bless your entire family with the gift of good health.
Sincerely,Elizabeth (Smidge) Stevens
