1 M M E E S S S S E E N N G G E E R R Volume 51 Issue # 11 DECEMBER 2013/January 2014 Gloria Dei Lutheran Church “CARING, GROWING, SERVING” From The Pastor… blessed Christmas season to you all! We begin a new church calendar year with Advent, which describes the coming Messiah, both in terms of Jesus’ incarnation, literally “enflesh- ment,” and as we look toward the time of his second coming at the end of time. One of the limits of the Christmas celebration of this season in our world today is the sentimentality that can surround the birth of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It is indeed a wonder that God would become human, a gift that is celebrated around the world. And while his birth is incredibly impor- tant, as a sign of God’s desire to continue to be involved with us, if the Babe in the manger is as far as you get with the story, you’ve missed the entire point, because it is his death on the cross and resurrection that really matter. It is those events which provide the high point, the climax, and put the exclamation mark to the story. The Story… it’s a full length, many faceted revelation of God acting throughout history for human- kind’s benefit – history is actually His story and is our story as well. And that is exactly the theme of our coming series of sermons and studies for 2014. Max Lucado and Randy Frazee offer this introduction: Welcome to the Story God’s Story This book tells the grandest, most compelling story of all time: the story of a true God who loves his children, who established for them a way of salvation and provided a route to eternity. Each story in these 31 chapters reveals a God of grace the God who speaks; the God who acts; the God who listens; the God whose love for his people culminated in his sacrifice of Jesus, his only Son, to atone for the sins of humanity. What’s more: this same God is alive and active today still listening, still acting, still pouring out his grace on us. His grace extends to our daily foibles; our ups, downs, and in-betweens; our moments of questions and fears; and most important, our response to his call on our lives, He’s the same God who forgave David’s failures and rescued Jonah from the dark belly of a fish. This same heavenly Father who shepherded the Israelites through the wilderness desires to shepherd us through our wanderings, to help us to get past our failures and rescue us for eternity. It’s our prayer that these stories will encourage you to listen for God’s call on your life, as he helps write your own story. The Story is not a book about the Bible. It is a condensed and chronologically ordered presentation of the Bible in its own words, selections from the New International Version, that will make your Bible reading easier to understand, give you a better grasp of its content, and, if you allow it, inspire you to consider how God’s singular story is playing its way out in your own life. The Word of God is so important to me that I have given my life to its reading and study. One of my Bible school professors invited us to “read, study, and inwardly digest” God’s Word, and I have never regretted the decision to know God better by undertaking the revelation God has personally given to us in the Bible, and I have found it incredibly rewarding, not just for intellectual knowledge, but for spiritual insight and emotional stability. That’s why I think it’s important for you to “read, study, and inwardly digest” God’s Word as well. Won’t you join me in discovering this incredible gift God has given to us to open and share? Please pick up a book, and beginning January 5 and continuing for 31 weeks join us in worship, participate in a small group, and share The Story with family, neighbors and friends. I can think of no greater gift you can give back to God than to know him better through the study of his Word. Power to you! Pastor Pat A

From The Pastor…

blessed Christmas season to you all! We begin a new church calendar year with Advent, which describes the coming Messiah, both in terms of Jesus’ incarnation, literally “enflesh-ment,” and as we look toward the time of his second coming at the end of time.

One of the limits of the Christmas celebration of this season in our world today is the sentimentality that can surround the birth of the Baby Jesus in Bethlehem. It is indeed a wonder that God would become human, a gift that is celebrated around the world. And while his birth is incredibly impor-tant, as a sign of God’s desire to continue to be involved with us, if the Babe in the manger is as far as you get with the story, you’ve missed the entire point, because it is his death on the cross and resurrection that really matter. It is those events which provide the high point, the climax, and put the exclamation mark to the story. The Story… it’s a full length, many faceted revelation of God acting throughout history for human-kind’s benefit – history is actually His story and is our story as well. And that is exactly the theme of our coming series of sermons and studies for 2014. Max Lucado and Randy Frazee offer this introduction:

This same heavenly Father who shepherded the Israelites through the wilderness desires to shepherd us through our wanderings, to help us to get past our failures and rescue us for eternity. IMPORTANT NOTICE – CONTRIBUTIONS

Donors must deliver or mail (and postmark) checks on or by December 31 in order to claim a charitable contribution deduction for 2013. Checks that are placed in the church offering on the first Sunday in 2014 will not qualify for charitable contribution deduction in 2013, even if the check is predated to 2013 or was actually written by 2013. However, checks that are written, mailed, and postmarked in 2013 will be deductible in 2013 even though they are not received by the church until 2014.

To insure the deductibility of your church contributions, please do not file your 2013 income tax return until you have received a written acknowledgement of your contribu-tions from the church. You may lose a deduction for some contributions if you file your tax return before receiving a written acknowledgement of your contribution from the church.

If you have any questions concerning your contributions or how to set up automatic deductions through the Simply Giving program, please contact the financial secretary, Dan Rinerson, at (408) 238-3541, or email to [email protected].

HEALTH MINISTRY CORNER by Donna Zimmerman, RN, Parish Nurse

Revelation 21:4† “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Once Jesus returns, we won’t need to worry about pain. In the meantime many of us still suffer with pain from arthritis or other ailments. Walking is a good way to alleviate arthritis pain. When pain hits, the first thought is to sit it out but walking it out is best. Arthritis Solutions recommends several ways to get more exercise. Pick out some of the following that might work for you:

Take the stairs—even if it is just one flight, it helps.

Be a phone walker—walk around while you talk.

Go for an after dinner stroll—twenty minutes is all it takes.

Commune with nature—stroll through a park or nature area a few times a week.

Try a lunch combo—spend half of lunch time eating and the other half walking.

Watching TV? Move around during commercials to get over 10 minutes of activity.

Take a break—anytime you feel drowsy, angry, bored or stressed go for a 5 minute walk to work out your emotional issues as well as your joints.

December Observances: Nat’l Drunk & Drugged Driving Prevention Mo.

Safe Toys and Gifts Mo.

World AIDS Day 12/1 Nat’l Aplastic Anemia Awareness Week 12/1-7

National Hand Washing Awareness Week is 12/1-7.

Health Sunday is December 1. As usual, blood pressure monitoring is offered. Remember, if you don’t know you have a problem, you can’t help yourself! Many problems, if caught early, can be treated much more easily than if they progress to a more dangerous level. I’ll be in Luther Hall following the service.
