PLACE Search Panel Picked As I mentioned last month, we are proceeding with the long, complicated search process for a new City Secretary to replace our long time City Secretary, Elaine Herff who will retire in August. A major part of this process was picking a search panel. I am very pleased to say that we have a wonderful panel picked for this process. Former Councilmember David Piwonka has agreed to Chair the Panel. West University City Secretary Thelma Lenz is on the panel, as is Councilwoman Heidi Case. Patty Spade, who heads up our utility customer services is on the panel along with J. Grady Randle, our City Attorney. I want to publicly thank our panel for helping us in this very important quest to find the perfect City Secretary for Meadows Place and help keep it…Your Place for Life. Water Issues Surface in Ft. Bend County The City of Meadows Place has met State requirements on dealing with subsidence by partnering with WC&ID#2 and formulating a Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP). We see that charge on our water bill every month, but there are still some cities in the County that have not complied and there have been a series of very important meetings taking place to deal with this issue. I went twice to testify before the Fort Bend Subsidence District - mainly to make sure that Meadows Place was a part of this very important discussion and to remind them we have played by their rules, made a commitment based on their requirements and have a stake in this too. One thing I learned was that going forward, the price of water is going up and those that are waiting will pay a lot more than we do. A lot more. As much as I hate to deal with, and pay for, our GRP, noncompliance is not an option. Had we not done what we did – we would be subject to paying a non- compliance fee of $4.50 per 1000 gallons on top of what we pay now. That’s a lot of money for something we used to get for basically nothing. Times have changed. Did You Know...That we had a lot of trees suffer in the drought. Many are dead, some are dying. We will know more come spring. Code Enforcement will be keeping a particularly sharp eye out for these trees as they pose a threat to the health, welfare and safety of the residents of Meadows Place. If you have a question about your trees, please have them checked by a professional. If you have them cut down, remember, they have to be taken down to ground level in a manner that grass can grow over them. Thank You.

Did You Know... in addition to the Meadows Place Home and Garden

Scholarship (application on our website), any Meadows Place resident that is an incoming

freshmen or upper classmen enrolling in HCC, Wharton County Junior College or University of Houston is eligible for a George Foundation Scholarship. If you fall into this category, or have a child that does, be sure and enter! You can find an application at: www.thegeorgefoundation.org Did You Know... Meadows Place resident Laura Arceneaux stepped out and started her own pre-employment and drug screening company? She calls it Quality Background Screening. Laura shows us why Fort Bend, Texas is a great place to live and why Meadows Place is …

Your Place for Life. Congratulations Laura, and best wishes to you and your new venture. Did You Know... Meadows Elementary is proud to announce that, for the second year in a row, the “Wit-Crackers” team will be

advancing to the State competition for Destination Imagination. D.I. is a program which encourages creative problem solving, quick thinking skills, and team work. The State competition will take place this April in Corpus and the opening will take place on the famous aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Meadows was one of only five teams (2 Elementary, 3 Secondary) from the district who are advancing to State. Members of the team are: Aman Baig (4th grade), Michael Brough (4th grade), Ethan Chow (4th grade), Adriana Hernandez (3rd grade), and Sugero Hernandez (4th grade). The team is coached by Shelley Brough. Wow!!! Way to go Wit Crackers! Did You Know... that we hear success story after success story about young people from Meadows Place? Jeremy Kemp, another Meadows Place native, has taken a leave of absence from

the University of Houston where he is a PhD candidate. He has completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and was accepted for an eight month internship with Intel in Portland OR. He and his brother Jonathan made the "road trip" with a U-haul visiting with grandparents in San Francisco and family in Port Orford OR to break up the long trip. His parents, Steve and Linda are proud of Jeremy, and so are we! Good luck at Intel Jeremy.

Did You Know... that the reason you are starting to see purple tops on our irrigation sprinklers in the park is that we will soon be converting more of the park to reclaimed water. The State requires that all non-potable water be clearly distinguished with purple pipe - or in this case, purple tops. Did You Know... Margaret and James Minton Morgan are proud of another young man that grew up in Meadows Place. Taylor Minton, was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. No more “butter bars” for him! Taylor grew up in Meadows Place, served as a lifeguard and completed his Eagle Scout project at the Oasis. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point where he graduated with a Computer Engineering degree. He married Christie Posner, his West Point girlfriend and is stationed at Fort Hood. Like his parents Margaret and James, we are very proud of him and thank him for his continued service to our country. Next time you are in the area, stop by City Hall and take a look at our Wall of Heroes, set up to honor all of our Meadows Place heroes serving in the armed services.

Did You Know... If you have someone YOU are proud of, or something of interest pertaining to Meadows Place, drop a Did You Know note at City Hall or email: [email protected] Thank You!

By Chief Mike A. Baker

Is Your Vehicle Safe?

Every 2 ½ minutes in Texas, another vehicle is broken into. Anything left inside may be of value

to a thief contemplating burglarizing your vehicle. Burglaries of Motor Vehicles (BMVs) are a continuing threat for us all. High Risk Areas include parking areas at retail establishments, office buildings, apartment / town home complexes, restaurants, parking garages, nightclubs, parks, churches, and exercise facilities. BMVs in these places normally occur during daytime and early evening hours. BMVs occur in residential neighborhoods less frequently, but the threat is still very real. These, more often than not, occur during nighttime hours while families are home.

The most common points of break-in are broken windows, pried or jimmied locks, and unlocked doors. Typical items stolen include laptops, cameras, cell phones, cash / credit cards, briefcases, gym bags, weapons, wallets and purses, money, documents with identifying information, stereos / CDs, garage door openers, and GPS systems.

There are some common sense things we can do to decrease our chances of suffering a BMV:• Always lock your vehicle.• Remove any items of value or with identifying information (such as those listed above).• If you must leave belongings inside the vehicle, make sure they are hidden from sight (the trunk is the best place). Some newer vehicles have a feature that allows you to lock the trunk to prevent someone opening it with the inside lever. Use it. • Park your vehicle inside your garage (even during the day) and close the garage door.• Never leave vehicle or house keys inside your vehicle.• Have a reputable dealer install a vehicle alarm.• If you see someone in your neighborhood who doesn’t belong there, report it to the police. • If you see someone who appears nervous, is pulling door handles, looking in windows, or bumping into vehicles (checking for alarms), notify the police or the management of the establishment. • If you see a vehicle slowly riding through (or circling) the neighborhood or a parking lot, report it to police or the management. • If your vehicle alarm activates or your dog is barking at something, it could be alerting you to someone up to no good. Do not ignore it. If you see anything suspicious outside your home, notify police immediately. • As always with suspicious persons and vehicles, try to get the most detailed description and location possible.

If your vehicle is burglarized, always report it to law enforcement. More information on this subject can be found at www.txwatchyourcar.com.

New County Commissioner - Grady Prestage

As many of you know, Texas is in the midst of a redistricting quandary, some of which has been sent back to court. One area that is settled is Ft. Bend County Commissioners precincts. Due to growth in the County, the precinct boundaries have changed and we are now in Precinct 2. Our County Commissioner is Commissioner Grady Prestage who has been serving Ft. Bend County in this capacity since 1990. Fortunately, I have been working closely with him the last couple of years trying to get commuter rail to Ft. Bend County and have developed a good working relationship with him. Commissioner Prestage told me he will drop by our City Council meetings from time to time and assured me we could - “call at any time and let me know if there is anything I can do for Meadows Place”. Welcome to Meadows Place Mr. Commissioner.

Happy 105th Birthday Mrs. Cox

February 22, 2012 was declared Lillian Cox Day in Meadows Place. This proclamation was read on the 105th birthday of Mrs. Lillian Cox. What a fantastic party. We looked at America in 1907, her birth year, and through photos we followed the life of this amazing lady. Right before she cut the cake, she stepped up, grabbed her dance partner and danced to one of her favorite big band tunes. Happy Birthday Mrs. Cox.

Car Covers

Hopefully everyone in the city is now aware of the new Car Cover

requirements that were placed into City Code recently, but if you need to know

the specific details, please take a look at the following excerpt:

The covering of a motor vehicle by the use of a tarpaulin (tarp) or other similar cover which is visible from a public place or public right-of-way, and not in any fully screened enclosure, is prohibited, unless that cover is made of durable fabric, which is custom fitted to the particular vehicle to which it is attached. The motor vehicle cover shall have tailored mirror pockets, antennae grommets, and eyelets to allow the cover to be pulled securely around the body of the vehicle. The motor vehicle cover shall not obscure the vehicle’s license plate, or motor vehicle registration certificate. Clear vinyl cutouts shall be sewn into the cover to ensure the visibility of the vehicle’s license plate, inspection and registration certificate.

Motor vehicle covers shall be kept in good repair and free from staining, rips, or other damage to the cover. Motor vehicle covers shall be secured properly to the vehicle and shall not dangle loosely onto the vehicle. Motor vehicle covers shall be a neutral color and shall not be a color considered loud, obnoxious, or excessively bright.

Motor vehicle covers shall not be used to cover a junked vehicle.

ALSO, please remember to rejuvenate or replace your mailboxes this month! Submit your “before & after” pictures to city hall (place in water utility payment box), or email them to me at [email protected]
