It highlights the big news stories of the

day, following them through the eyes

of the Times journalists covering them.

And the view through those eyes isboring. eeply boring.

    CSPAN, basically. Only duller.

Very quickly the photograph became labeledas The Marlboro Marine, which is quite aDtle to give a picture. It created a lot of

conversaDon, was published widely, but itsnot an accurate representaDon of the realstory. James is a human being who as toughand macho as he looks is dealing with

incredibly severe posttraumaDc stressdisorder (PTS) from what he experienced inIraq.

THE HUMAN TOLL: MOUNTAINTOP REMOVAL IN APPALACHIA Over the last 40 years, mountaintop removal coal mining has buried nearly 2,000

miles of mountain streams, and destroyed more than a million acres of forest whileblasDng mountains to extract coal. Each week, 4million pounds of explosives areused across Appalachia a force equivalent to the bomb dropped on Hiroshima.Besides an environmental issue, this form of mining has been called a human rights

issue for those living in the coalfields. In some towns, drinking water has beencontaminated, seriously impacDng the health of their residents. In an area richwith mountain culture, some say their heritage and way of life is being destroyedas mountains are demolished around their homes, someDmes forcing them toleave hometowns where generaDons before have lived.

Coal companies and proponents of mountaintop mining say that this is the fastestand cheapest way to get coal, and that America needs this form of coal mining tosupply electricity and energy across the country, as well as for job security for

those living in Appalachia. The Obama administraDon has promised to take a closerlook at the effects of mountaintop removal mining, creaDng even higher tensionsbetween the opponents and proponents of this mining pracDce.
