Minster Matters have very recently introduced recycling points around the village for your dead batteries. You can recycle any normal D, C, AA, AAA cells, PP3’s and watch batteries, hearing aid batteries, phone batteries etc. In fact any of the small dry batteries you use in and around your home. The scheme is run by a company called BatteryBack Ltd and they will collect free of charge from schools or civic buildings, so we have leased four containers from them, at an initial cost of £10, which we have now sited in Attwells, The Attic and Bens, as they are the three outlets in the village who sell batteries. The fourth is at the Library, where we will then have them collected from, in bulk, as BatteryBack class this as a civic building. For individual shopkeepers in the village to send their own would incur them costs, but by us centralising the main collection point at the library they will be collected from us for free. So no excuses for putting them into your domestic waste, just pop them in your pocket and drop them into a bin at one of these four places when you’re next passing. Note: change of advertised venue now at Parkminster, in the Abbey Grounds (former museum site) See page 25 for further information The renovation of the late-nineteenth century churchyard gates has been executed with pride and professionalism by Mark and his staff at Broadstairs Metal Craft and they are now fully operational for the first time in about twenty years, at which time the double gates were damaged by HGVs on three separate occasions. Following the damage, the gates merely hung in a sad, neglected and in-operable state for about fifteen years. When the new paths were laid to the churchyard under a MATCH project, it was found necessary to remove the double gates for ground levelling purposes, and so they were taken away for safe- keeping. Although numerous requests were made to TDC who are responsible for the maintenance and repair of the churchyard and its boundaries it wasn’t until this year that Paul Verrall, TDC’s Open Spaces Manager, was able to allocate a very small budget to this project. Although this was insufficient for the complete refurbishment, MATCH was fortunately able to step in, using funds from an on-going conservation improvement budget. And so, thanks to this partnership funding, we now have beautifully restored double gates offering vehicular access to the church when needed, and a single gate for pedestrians. This pedestrian gate is of a design which allows a double swing action that self closes. Gates of this kind would have been quite common at churchyards, schools and the like during the Victorian period, though not many are thought to have remained intact. Not surprisingly then, that these wrought iron gates (probably originally crafted in the forge opposite), are Grade 2 listed! Another worthy project, which has further enhanced our village conservation area. Summers nearly over and the kids will soon be back at school,(did I hear some mums cheering!!) but Minster keeps ticking along, and by the time most of you read this we will know whether or notwe’ve had any success in the Kent Village of the Year competitionas the awards ceremony is on Tuesday 1st. Myself and Nora willhave attended on behalf of Minster Matters whilst Paul Willins wasasked to represent the village as a whole because he did so muchtowards our entry. We’ll let you know how we got, on next month.

As you can see from the article on the front page MM havestarted a battery recycling scheme in the village and we sincerelyhope you will all support our efforts and drop your batteries intoone of our boxes and not into your household bin.

Elsewhere in this issue you will read we are still actively seekingsome office space to enable us to expand our product, to offer alimited number of LARGE PRINT magazines each month, (maybethen the next step will be to produce it in Braille !!)

Blowing our own trumpet, we’ve received some excellentfeedback on another of our publications, namely ‘The Minster Mineof Information’, which is a loose-leaf booklet that we’ve puttogether, with the backing of the Parish Council, that includes justabout everything anyone could wish to know about the village andlocal facilities on a day to day basis. It is primarily intended forprospective residents and visitors. Many businesses have individualcopies for customers to peruse and they are also available from thelibrary and Colebrook Sturrock.

This encourages us into yet another project, that is to producethe same booklet but in audio form as an indexed CD, ordownloadable file, with each section on a separate track to give itease of use. Again this is something else we really need office spaceto be able to consider.

On a slightly different note but still in the communicationsfield, MM have been talking to the Parish Clerk with reference tointroducing a WiFi Hotspot to the centre of the village, which ifour ideas go according to plan, could hopefully be offered to

residents for free and at a small nominal cost to others. To prevent the misuseof this of an evening, we would only expect to make it available during thenormal working day, but before any of this happens we first have to securefunding to enable us to purchase and install the necessary equipment, and wealso need to get the blessing of the Parish Council,(it’s on the Sept Agenda) sowe’ll keep you posted on progress via these pages.

You will read further on in this issue that the Salvation Army in Minsterare about to get a new Commanding Officer, Major Denise Cooper , and we atMM extend her a very warm welcome to the village and hope we may be ableto be of service to her in the future.

That’s it, I waffled on for long enough. Where’s Zac today?

Advice from PC Mick Wright, Force Watch Liaison OfficerDear all,Please see below some advice to help you enjoy a safe and crime free

summer. Very many thanks,********

Residents across the county are being advised by Kent Police to keep theirbelongings safe this summer, as temperatures soar. The force is remindingpeople to maintain home and car security in the hot weather. The increasedtemperatures have a direct impact on the number of burglaries due to insecurity.

Chief Superintendent Matt Nix, of Kent Police’s Partnership and CrimeReduction, said: “It is easy for people to forget or get complacent about theirproperty when they are enjoying the warmer weather. If you are in your backgarden, secure windows and doors in other parts of your property. If you leaveyour house please check that all windows and doors are shut.”

Reduce risk of burglary by: keeping doors and windows shut if you aren’tin the room, thinking about which windows you leave open in hot weather, remembering some burglars can get through small spaces so, if in doubt, shutand lock it, locking garden equipment and ladders away and securing shedswith strong padlocks.

Burglars will seize any opportunity to steal and will look for doors andwindows left open on hot days.

Motorists are advised to ensure windows and doors are locked, Sat Navsuction marks are wiped off windscreen, and no items are left on display.

********MM’s advice on Doorstep CallersPlease be aware that we are being visited again by officials trying to sell

us Electricity, and while, what they are doing is not in itself illegal, it is reportedthat they regularly attempt to ‘pressure’ householders into changing suppliers. One of their normal strategies is to say “you should have received a letter fromus”, but we have yet to hear of anyone who has actually received this supposedcorrespondence.

So be aware if you get ‘cold called’ you do not have to accept what theysay but if you do feel obliged to ‘sign up’ then remember you have a legalright to a seven day ‘cooling off’ period, that they must inform you of, whenyou can cancel any agreement you may have signed.

Also be aware that the ‘duster sellers’ are about again, and although theyare regularly warned off by the Community Warden, they still persist in tryingtheir luck here.

After visits from such people it isn’t unknown for a spate of burglaries tofollow, so again keep your wits about you and don’t become distracted bythem.

If you are unsure, and you see them coming to your door then don’t answerit, or if you do open the door to them just politely say “no thank you” andclose the door immediately without engaging them in any further conversation.

Congratulations to the “Firing Four” who wonthe Open Day competition and the “Harris” Familywinners of the Plate. Their charities were verygrateful.

This month is when clubs around East Kent run their tournaments, andMinster members try their skills. Our Ladies Captain, Sylvia, and Audreywon the ladies pairs, Joan and Jean achieved 3rd place in the semi-finals, wesaw Maurice, Ray and Ron compete in the triples, and Ron played againstAllan in the pairs, well done everyone.

It is also that time when you can visit the bowls green to see the clubmembers playing off their club competitions, with Finals Day getting evercloser.

To date, against East Kent clubs in friendly matches, we have only lost1 game in 4. In the second of our Shield matches against Tilmanstone B.C.we had a deficit of 30 shots from the away game. However, at home we won4 of the 6 triples, by 125 shots to 82, meaning Minster retained the Shieldby 13 shots overall.

The Ray Razzell Competition was played on 16th August andcongratulations go to Sylvia, Jill and Bob who out-played the top men’s team. The men will have to watch out again on 29th August, as this is the day theLadies have challenged the Men.

Make a date in your diary for Saturday and Sunday 19th/20thSeptember which are the ‘Finals Day’ for the club. There is plenty ofseating for visitors.

MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATIONBonjour Mes Amis and welcome to more exciting news from the Association!Since last going to print with our news, we have had a busy and productive

few months. The school exchange with the French children and Year 5 Pupilsat our very own Minster Primary was a tremendous success and was enjoyedby all (so say the children themselves ) .

On 17th May, we travelled to Armbouts-Cappel for the annual AnniversaryCelebration which this year was hosted by the French. A full coach left Minsterearly and, as usual, our French hosts did us proud with a superb Buffet, lotsof refreshments, and of course a walk round the village Boot Fair which hasto be seen to be believed. Lots of praise from those who went over for the firsttime and who hope to enjoy a similar experience in the future.

As a matter of interest to you history buffs and our older generation herein Minster, our exchange gift to the French this year was a book titled A BrushWith Life and was written and sketched by Henry Tom Smith who was bornand raised in The Workhouse of the hospital which used to be at the top ofTothill Street and is now Hillminster Estate. He also attended Minster PrimarySchool. I wonder if any of you remember him or have read his book?

Following that we held our third annual Fun Day on Sunday 7th June. After a wet weather start, things brightened up and although numbers were notas great as we could have wished for, it did turn out to be a very good day.Lots of congratulations from folk who attended and don’t live in Minster. Socome on you Minsterites, where are you, or, where were you?

Last on the calendar was the Parade of the Giants in Armbouts-Cappel andwhile we wanted to fill a coach and take our Minster Giant across, lack ofsupport again thwarted our efforts. However, not to be undone, we did managethree cars and a few good folks who squeezed the Giant Nun into the cars andduly paraded her Greatness at the event.

Last but not least and on a sad note, we need help. Due to othercommitments, we will lose our Chairman, our Secretary and our Treasurerwhen the AGM takes place in November. If we cannot fill these positions, thenthe Twinning will cease and all assets will be frozen until Minster ParishCouncil takes responsibility and advises us of the due process that needs to betaken.

So come on all you folks out there, we need volunteers to come along andkeep this part of our village history alive and kicking.

If you can help or need further info, contact, yes, Bob at the Attic, he isthe current Chairman and knowing this you may be able to guess why he iscommitted elsewhere.

The Twinning needs You, so why not give it a shot and help the SchoolExchange project to continue for the benefit of our Village Children.

Remember Minster does Matter A bientôt!

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI August was a quiet month, with no meetings or outings - however,

several members had been busy making items for, and putting the finishingtouches to, our entries in the two-day exhibition staged at CanterburyHigh School to celebrate the 90th Year of the East Kent Federation of

Women's Institutes. Some 60 Institutes staged entries for the 'Celebrate Kent' competition, which

showed off skills of needlework, card making, cookery, flower arranging, art andcrafts - and yes, jam making! In addition, there were displays by the Craft and HomeEconomics, Lace, Spinners and Needlework Guilds, floral and art exhibitions, and adisplay of 384 hand-made bookmarks! With entertainment, and a 'country market'with produce for sale, this was an extremely enjoyable event.

We took a stall at the village Flower Show in July, selling cakes and bakes madeby members - and proudly report 'sold out' - thank you to all who supported us andbought our goodies.

Our next meeting, to which new members and visitors will be made welcome, will be in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm on 8th September when Mrs. P Daniels willgive a talk on Morris Dancing.

MINSTER MAYHEMSMinster Mayhems had a really successful Folk Week with two

Bandstand spots, being in the Procession and busking out with other"grown up" sides. They worked really hard not only for Mayhems but

many did workshops learning about other forms of dance or helped me run the"Maypole made easy" workshop. One side was so impressed they have allowed us touse a stick dance they taught us on the jetty! So look out for it next year - maybe LateNight Shopping.

I do need to thank all the parents and musicians who support Minster Mayhems, because it would not work without them; and Jacqui for being so patient when weuse the Old Schools for practice.

If anyone would like to join us please phone 821795 first, we are going to bedancing out a few more weeks - hopefully at an old people's home and WestwoodCross. Anyone over the age of six is welcome, be prepared to learn and then enjoydancing in front of crowds of people!!

With regard to the following letters reference yellow lines and thepeacock, and before myself or any other member of my editorial teamget earache from villagers, who may or may not support either issue, may I say that regardless of where each of us stand personally on eitherof them, we believe it is our duty to report on both sides of any importantissue such as these.

Whether or not we as individuals are for or against either of themshould not blur our judgement, and for that reason we believe we shouldtry to be seen as being as unbiased as possible in our reporting.

Your Letters ....

Yellow Lines in Monkton Road Long Overdue.Dear Editor. These yellow lines are long overdue, the council in

their infinite wisdom laid down a new pathway, and made it so wide thatit narrowed the road way for vehicles. It is virtually impossible to drivethrough the centre of the village unheeded with cars parkedindiscriminately on both sides of the road.

With yellow lines down one side within the shopping area wouldvery much alleviate the traffic congestion, especially in the actual square, where large lorries have difficulty turning without causing damage tocars at times.

We might have to find room for another car park to accommodatethese vehicles, but at least we could drive through the centre of the villagein safety.

Rosemary Ball

Yellow Lines - Is it such a huge deal?Unsurprisingly, I have not failed to notice the “hoo-ha” surrounding

the proposal for some new yellow lines in the village, but I am still unsureas to why it’s really such a huge deal. Reaping maximum exposure onthe front page of August’s issue, in stunning colour, an article on thesubject described the situation as “Impending doom”, which is overdramatising it slightly I feel: it’s just some yellow paint after all, andthere is an often largely empty car park not 50 yards away.

A good point was made in the article about people only having startedto park there since the pavement was installed, but they are not going tostop now. So with the looming catastrophe - that is a great leap in the

Cont’d from prev. pg - Yellow Lines - Is it such a huge deal?..population of our village approaching, something needs to be done

about it.I appreciate that the owners of shops around that area are concerned

about parking restrictions affecting their sales, hence the various petitions, but my signature is not on any of them, getting through that stretch fromthe butcher’s to the library is a nightmare at times, and I think someyellow lines would be a great help.

How about some outside the fish and chip shop on the high streetif they’ve half a tin left over.

Peacock Problems. It was with surprise that I read the poem “There’s no need to destroy”.

(featured in August’s issue of Minster Matters)I can only assume you have heard comments about the peacock in

St Mildred’s Road.Your 2nd line amused me, “They make a racket but you should

ignore it”.Residents living near or who can hear the peacock had no wish to

have the peacock destroyed. Let me explain:-The peacock’s call is horrible – it is a scream. The peacock likes to scream VERY EARLY in the morning, as early

as 3:20am. I know because we have been woken at that time.“Go back to sleep” I can hear you say. There is one big problem. After his first scream, the peacock then

screams every 10 – 11 minutes until around 8:30am. It’s rather difficultto go back to sleep.

This isn’t for 1 day, 1 week; it’s every day for around 5 months. The peacock is a very proud bird and likes to see himself in a mirror.

If there is a beautiful shiny car around, he can see his reflection. He thenpecks at the car, and damages the car with dents.

He isn’t very good in gardens – other peoples - but won’t stay onthe path or grass, or walk between rows of vegetable. Cont’d next pg...

Cont’d from prev. pg - Peacock ProblemsHe enters the garden and tramples over anything and everything.

He did it to our garden.Peacocks are exotic birds, which need space to move and fly.

Because of their noise they need to be away from a residential area.Wild Wood or Wingham Animal Park are ideal places.

I hope when you read this you will understand why residents whohear the peacock want the bird moved to a larger area.

Ed the Peacock Loves MinsterSince moving to Minster nearly four years ago, I have encountered

many unpleasant experiences - my home has been burgled, struck bylightening and flooded, and I have also suffered the bereavement ofboth my partner and father. Each time I’ve got through these difficulttimes because of the strength and support of Minster’s fantasticcommunity spirit. Always there is someone there to help or offer ashoulder to cry on.

Although all of this has happened it was with great shock andadmiration I came to see the tremendous support Ed the Peacock hasreceived.

He has been wrongly accused of many things - terrorising children, pulling flowers off of plants, when in actual fact he’s removing insects, and generally causing malicious damage - this simply isn’t true. Thechildren really love him and local nursery groups bring their childrento visit him and the many other animals and water fowl that inhabitmy grounds.

I moved here because the house was on a half acre plot of land -plenty of room for all.

For two to three weeks, ‘not months’, as some people seem tobelieve, he does make a louder noise than during the rest of the year, but fortunately my closest neighbours love to see and hear him in andaround their gardens.

There but for the Grace of God we are fortunate enough to havethese senses, there are many who would like to experience these thingsthat others find so annoying.

Ironically, one of the people that is kicking up most of thiscomplaint, is the very person who suggested he be freed from hiscaptivity in the first place, when they were delivering the free newspaper. They have since tried to have him removed, and even told my builderto concrete him into my driveway. Cont’d from prev. Pg - Ed the Peacock Loves MinsterOn another occasion pellets have been shot at him in my garden

resulting in skin being removed from the back of his legs in an attemptby someone to remove him.

Ed loves Minster, sharing his food with my cats, wandering aroundwith my ducks and swans and visiting other gardens where he is madewelcome. It would be very difficult to re-home such a magnificentcreature with others of his own kind as the existing peacocks will havealready made their dominance known, and Ed, being put into an existingcolony, would be severely harmed.

I love Minster too, and again I would like to say a very big thankyou for all the support we have received.

Praise for Minster ConstructionWe have had various builders over the years, doing work for us in

some of our homes. So I was dreading having building work again! Butwe have been very impressed with our builder, who lives in the village.Yes, there is brick dust everywhere! That can’t be helped; but he hasarrived bright and early every day, is very clean and tidy in his work, isalways cheerful, and has done a great job for a very reasonable price. Ithink we are all quick to moan, ourselves included, but we want to givepraise where it’s due and Richard of Minster Construction certainlydeserves it.

Yours sincerely, Julia & Alan Hill

DVD Thanks from Minster Cat CareOn behalf of Minster Cat Care and all the volunteers I would like to

pass on our grateful thanks to the person (who wishes to remainanonymous) who has produced the excellent set of three DVD’s on OldMinster. The DVD’s have been produced to an exceptionally highstandard and are extremely professional.

The proceeds from this set have been split among three charities andMinster Cat Care has been a beneficiary.

The cost of producing the DVD’s has been entirely at the donor’sexpense and they have raised much needed funds during this time ofrecession to help the animals. While respecting the donor’s wish foranonymity we felt that this generous gesture should be acknowledged inMinster Matters.

Hallo Everyone, I am researching my family roots, theyare firmly fixed in Minster. If you know anything aboutthe name JEZARD, I would like to hear from you. MyGrandfather and Great Grandfather owned the bakeryon Church Street going back to 1800s. My Great Auntwas Edie Barnes, I believe she was a councillor, othernames would be Burton, my Grandfather’s mother andHougham my mother’s parents who lived atGreenbanks Tothill. Grandad married Molly Houghamand moved into 21 Monkton Road, Minster. VicKingsland was an old friend of my Grandad, he worked

at the bakery with George Foster, just pre WW2.Grandad and Gran left Minster but sisters remained inthe area and they kept close contact with Vic andGeorge. The Burtons lived in Minster as well, ThomasBurton was in a newspaper cutting aged 94 of Minster ?He was my Great Grandmother’s father. Anyhow if anyof this means anything to anyone I would love to hearfrom you. I have many happy memories of shortholidays in Minster, down on the marshes, staying atthe Bell Inn and visiting Vic and Olive.Sandie email: [email protected]

RESEARCH - NAME OF JEZARD - early 1900s up till 1970s

Here at Minster Matters we have a very real need forsome secure office space, preferably close to the villagecentre. It doesn’t need to be a large area but we dorequire space to setup our 2 computers, 3 printers andour CD duplicator, plus we need space for 2 desks(which we have), and maybe enough space to be able torecord our audio files once a month.

Our reason for this move, away from the crampedspace under my stairs, is that we wish to expand ourmonthly offerings to also include a limited number ofcopies of the magazine in “LARGE” print format, thatwe can produce “in-house” with our own equipment.

We would preferably like access to the Internet foremails etc, but could work without this temporarily.

Our main problem, as I see it, is that we are unable toafford costly rents, because we already run the magazineon a shoestring budget, but we could perhaps come tosome arrangement with any potential landlord, especially where costs would be involved in supplyingInternet access.

We have repeatedly asked about the vacant officeabove the library, but KCC Libraries, for some reasonbest known to them, seem unwilling to even talk to usabout it.

The Parish Council, with the Clerk’s permission, arekindly storing our desks and one printer at present, which we thank them for, whilst the rest of ourequipment is spread amongst the editorial team in their

own homes, which isn’t at all convenient. We would truly appreciate any offer of help and we

thank you for having read our plea.Whilst writing on this subject we would also like to

take this opportunity to thank James Galbraith formerlyof County Finance for the 2 desks and the laser printer, also Thanet Press and Photogriffin for the two A3 inkjets.

Young Minster Bowling Ace, Jessica Silvester,is looking for your help !!

Here is Jessica’s story. My name is Jessica Silvester and I am seventeen

years of age. I live in Minster with my mother andbrother and have been tenpin bowlingsince I was eight. I attended MinsterPrimary School and SandwichTechnology School.

I bowl in leagues at Bugsy’s inCliftonville in order to gain experienceand compete at an adult level. I havecompleted three years in the JuniorEngland Training Scheme in Sheffield. In addition to this I receive instructionfrom my coach Richard Lambkin. Forthe past six years I have competed forKent on more than ten occasions, thisyear making the under- 18’s, under-24’sand adult ladies teams.

I am writing to enquire if any of yourreaders would be able to help me withsome form of sponsorship or funding.

On the 21st June I travelled to Crewein order to compete in the Triple CrownTrials for a place in the England teamafter finishing in the top 20 under 19 girls in the country.I finished in the top six, qualifying for a place in theEngland squad. I am extremely honoured to have beengiven the opportunity to represent my country at theJunior Triple Crown, which is being held in Stirling,Scotland from 27th to 30th August 2009

The problem with bowling is that it is self-funded

and despite working part-time between my studies, I amunable to cover the cost even with the help and supportfrom my mother. This year alone we have spent inexcess of £3500 competing in various tournaments.

I must participate in at least seven majortournaments each year, and finish inthe top twenty in order to compete inthe Triple Crown trials. In addition tothis I take part in nine tournamentsqualifying for Kent.

The main issue is not so muchcovering the entry fees but the cost oftravel and overnight accommodation.

The tournaments take place atvarious locations across the countrywhich involves a lot of travelling.

I am extremely dedicated tomy sport and feel I still have a lot toachieve. In order to do this I need tocompete in more tournaments in thefuture which will require furtherfunding.

If you do require any furtherinformation then please do nothesitate to contact me. I wouldwelcome any opportunity to speak

further about this.If you’d like to help, you can contact Jessica

SALVATION ARMY BELIEF IN ACTIONANNUAL APPEAL 2009

During the month of September members of the Salvation Armyand volunteers deliver gift envelopes and knock on doors in Minster,

Monkton, St Nicholas, Cliffsend, Birchington, Preston, Wingham, Stourmouth,Wickhambuex and Ichham collecting donations for the Salvation Army AnnualAppeal to support its work in this Country.

The Salvation Army is a Christian Church which seeks to put its faith intoaction in the community.  Many of the people whom The Salvation Army help, feel they have no place in our society.  Poverty, family breakdown, homelessness, drug abuse and even old age can set people apart and leave them feelingmarginalised, but The Salvation Army believes that people's lives can be changedfor the better, no matter how big their problems appear.  That is why they offerpractical help including residential centres for families at risk, homeless people, people struggling with addictions and older people as well as a variety ofcommunity programmes.

Next to the government The Salvation Army is the biggest provider of socialservices in the UK.  Whilst love and friendship are freely given, running theservices takes time, expertise and money.  Our local target is £4,000. That iswhy The Salvation Army needs your support.

If you are able to help please contact Major Val Hope on 01843 823830.

Kyla Lamb, Clerk to the Council, August 2009

Audrey PickeringAudrey has been a long time resident of the village and raised her family here.

She has always very active within the community and served on the Parish Councilfor 34 years, only relinquishing her seat when ill health visited her.

Residents will know that Audrey also represented the village on Thanet DistrictCouncil and worked tirelessly for the good of Minster. She was supported by herlate husband Harry, who also sat on both the Parish and District Council, and indeedHarry was, for a period, Leader of the District Council. Both of them ensured thatMinster was not left out of the considerations by TDC, an example of which wouldbe the involvement they both had with the setting up of the Rural Life Museum andthe Pavilion

In addition to her Council work Audrey has been very prominent within thevillage and supported many organizations, particularly the Salvation Army and theSchool where she allocated much of her TDC allowance. She has always been wellrespected, her door has always been open to residents to discuss problems, particularlyin the housing area, and she pursued these concerns at TDC strenuously.

SMALL GRANTS FOR VILLAGE GROUPSThe Parish Council has set aside limited funding to allow it to offer small grants

to village groups/organisations. If any group is interested in applying for a grant theyshould request an application form from the Parish Council at the address shownbelow. All applications are required to be submitted by 30 September 2009 to allowthem to be considered by the appropriate committee of the council and those grantsapproved will be payable from the 1st April 2010

Please submit your application or enquiries to: Mrs. Kyla Lamb, Parish Clerk,Minster Parish Council, 4A Monkton Road, Minster CT12 4EAE mail: [email protected]

ESSENTIAL RAILWAY RENEWAL AT MINSTERNetwork Rail has commissioned Balfour Beatty to carry out essential track

renewal work in your area. As part of a national programme to improve andmaintain the rail network, jointed rail will be replaced with continuous weldedrail. This work will have the added benefit of reducing the level of noisecurrently experienced from passing trains. Wherever possible, we do try to carryout noisy engineering work during daylight hours. However for safety reasons,we often have to work throughout the night, as well as at weekends to takeadvantage of train free periods.

Work is planned to take place between:2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 31 Aug - 04 Sep0800hrs and 1600hrs Mid-Week Days 01 Sep - 04 Sep0800hrs and 1600hrs Mid-Week Days 07 Sep - 11 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 07 Sep - 11 Sep2300hrs and 0400hrs W/End Fri 11 Sep - Mon 14 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 14 Sep - 18 Sep2300hrs and 0400hrs W/End Fri 18 Sep - Mon 21 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 21 Sep - 25 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 22 Sep - 23 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 23 Sep - 24 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 24 Sep - 25 Sep2300hrs and 0600hrs Mid-Week Nights 28 Sep - 02 0ct(The two w/ends above will be 24/7 working from Fri through to Mon)

Work will involve removing the old track by crane, excavatingthe track bed and then replacing the rail and components using aspecial track laying machine. The contractors will be using somenoisy equipment and there will also be lights and generators on site.Wherever possible silenced equipment and noise barriers will beused. Site personnel will be briefed to ensure that they cause theleast possible disturbance when working close to residentialproperties.

Should you have any enquiries regarding this work you cancontact the Network Rail National Helpline on 08457 11 41 41.
