PORTLAND TIMBERS vs D.C. UNITED PROVIDENCE PARK, Portland, Ore.

May 3, 2014 (WEEK 9, MLS Game #78) 7:30 p.m. PT (ROOT-NW; CSN-MA) A pair of clubs heading in opposite directions meet in an interconference clash when the Portland Timbers play host to D.C. United on Saturday evening at Providence Park. The Timbers are still looking for their first victory of 2014, coming off a 1-1 draw at the Houston Dynamo last weekend. United have now gone five consecutive games without a loss, after their impressive 4-1 home win against FC Dallas last weekend. REFEREE: Ricardo Salazar. This is the only league meeting between the teams this season. Since winning the first meeting ever between the clubs, a 3-2 win May 29, 2011 in Portland, United have not

claimed a victory. The Timbers have won once – a 2-0 win last May 25 in the only meeting between the teams. Coaches record: Caleb Porter vs. DC: P1 W1 L0 D0 … Ben Olsen vs. POR: P5 W1 L1 D3

PORTLAND TIMBERS The Portland Timbers saw their season-opening winless streak stretched to eight games, reaching a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Timbers are in ninth place in the Western Conference with 5 points from 8 games. LAST MATCH

The Dynamo opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Brad Davis played a perfect cross into the box, and a wide-open Will Bruin headed the cross past Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts.

But the Timbers countered in the 34rd minute. Midfielder Kalif Alhassan hit a pass into the Dynamo box that deflected off Davis and into the path of Gaston Fernandez, and he hammered a first-time effort into the upper-right corner of the goal to pull the Timbers level.

Timbers head coach Caleb Porter made one change to the team that dropped a 1-0 decision to Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium. Gaston Fernandez came in up top in place of Maximiliano Urruti.

PORTLAND TIMBERS (4-2-3-1): Donovan Ricketts - Jack Jewsbury, Pa Modou Kah, Mamadou Danso, Michael Harrington - Diego Chara, Will Johnson - Kalif Alhassan (Michael Nanchoff 76), Diego Valeri (Maximiliano Urruti 69), Darlington Nagbe (Steve Zakuani 87) - Gaston Fernandez.

TEAM NEWS The Timbers saw their season-opening winless streak extended to eight games, following the 1-1 draw in

Houston. The streak matches the club’s MLS record, set previously July 7-Aug. 19, 2012. “We had been conceding late, but we didn’t today. It’s a real positive that the defenders were making plays late

in the game, when a lot of times you get nervous in those moments. They looked composed in the latter stages today, and in some games this year we didn’t look completely composed,” said Timbers head coach Caleb Porter. “I’m just disappointed that we don’t find a notch more to win the game. That’s the final piece we have to dig into.”

Gastón Fernández scored his third goal of the season, his first since netting in each of the first two matches of the season, last in the 1-1 draw with Chicago on March 16.

“Gastón Fernández showing a bit of quality in that moment of scoring that goal is a big positive for us,” said Porter. “The one piece we need to continue to do better is in the final third. For me, I would have liked to see a bit more aggressiveness at times. As much as we had the ball we have to turn that possession into penetration.

MLS GAME INFORMATION

For me, it’s about individuals taking responsibility at times to step up and shoot, and drive. We’re getting closer.”

All three of Fernández’s goals have been unassisted. Five of the nine Timbers goals on the season have been unassisted.

“We create good chances on team play and combination play, but we need guys to be a little bit more selfish for the team. Just like Gastón in that moment, he got the ball in the box, you could tell he was ready for that moment, and he jumped the defender, and put it in the upper corner,” said Porter. “We need that ruthlessness in our team. You can see we play positive soccer, we’re organized, we’re right there in every game.”

The draw at BBVA Compass Stadium marked the first road point taken this season by the Timbers, after three losses on their travels. Six of the next nine games for Portland will be at Providence Park.

“We have to find a way to turn these performances that are solid, good defensive road performances into wins. On one hand, we made plays defensively, and we feel good coming from behind to get a point on the road. We hadn’t been able to do that in the first three road games of the year,” said midfielder Will Johnson. From that point of view it’s positive, but when you squander leads at home you have to turn these games into wins.”

D.C. UNITED D.C. United stretched their undefeated run to five matches, rolling to a 4-1 win against FC Dallas on Saturday evening at RFK Stadium. United are in a tie for second place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points from 7 games. LAST MATCH

Dallas opened the scoring just 12 minutes in. Receiving a pass from Fabian Castillo, Blas Perez sent a one-touch pass to Mauro Diaz at the top of the box. He slipped around United fullback Cristian Fernandez and hammered a shot home from 12 yards out.

FCD then went down a in the 39th minute when Zach Loyd was sent off following a second yellow card after a a rash, studs-up challenge on United midfielder Davy Arnaud.

United were level deep into first-half stoppage time. Nick DeLeon played a ball down the touchline to Eddie Johnson, and his cross was picture-perfect, finding Fabian Espindola inside the six for an easy headed finish.

The home side took the lead on the hour. A shot from substitute Conor Doyle from 8 yards out caromed off Dallas 'keeper Chris Seitz and fell perfectly for an onrushing Bobby Boswell, who made no mistake.

United made it 3-1 in the 64th minute when Espindola skipped down the left touchline and set up Sean Franklin, then Espindola scored his second and United's fourth five minutes later, finishing off a cross from Chris Rolfe.

Dallas finished two men down after Michel was shown a straight red card in second-half stoppage time for violent conduct after taking a swat at United midfielder Rolfe.

United head coach Ben Olsen made one change to the team that reached a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium. Bill Hamid came back in between the posts in place of Andrew Dykstra.

D.C. UNITED (4-4-2): Bill Hamid - Sean Franklin (Chris Korb 74), Jeff Parke, Bobby Boswell, Cristian Fernandez - Nick DeLeon, Perry Kitchen, Davy Arnaud, Chris Rolfe - Eddie Johnson (Conor Doyle 51), Fabian Espindola (Luis Silva 79).

TEAM NEWS D.C. United scored four goals – their biggest offensive output in nearly two seasons – in the win against FC

Dallas. Their last 4-goal game was a 4-2 win vs. Chicago, Aug. 22, 2012. “I think a lot of these guys have something to prove, for one reason or the other. I have something to prove and

our staff has something to prove, so hopefully we can continue on this run,” said United head coach Ben Olsen. Fabián Espíndola scored the seventh multiple-goal game of his MLS career, netting a pair of goals and also

adding an assist. Espíndola has four goals and three assists this season, involved on the scoresheet in seven of D.C.’s 10 goals for the season.

“I feel good about our strength in trying to keep the ball and trying to get better,” said Espíndola. “Sometimes you’re not going to score, but at least you can try to play – that’s what I want, and we won.”

Bill Hamid returned between the posts, after missing three matches with a toe injury. Hamid has conceded seven goals in his four starts this season; in his stead, Andrew Dykstra recorded two clean sheets in three starts as United won twice and tied once.

“It’s never easy, coming back in after your backup has a good run,” said Olsen. “[Hamid] wanted to prove that he was the No. 1and I think he did that ... At the end of the day, Bill is our No. 1. He didn’t leave the field through a run of poor form. We have all the faith in the world in Bill – I have a lot of faith in all three of our ‘keepers.” Said Hamid: “Andrew did a great job. It shows the depth that this team has in the goalkeeper position. Last year when I was out, Joey [Willis] stepped in and did a hell of a job as well, and he’s doing a hell of a job at Richmond this year. We’ve always had depth and great competition at goalkeeper and honestly I welcome it. It makes all of us better.”

Nick DeLeon recorded an assist for a second consecutive match, while Chris Rolfe recorded his first assist since coming to United from Chicago (he did score on his D.C. debut April 5).

MLS GAME INFORMATION

“It looked good. Even when we were even strength, we had great possession and great movement. We weren’t really getting the good kicks that we wanted, but that will come,” said Rolfe. “It’s a matter of guys being more comfortable, aggressive and a little greedier.”

Sean Franklin scored his first goal for United, the sixth of his MLS career. His last goal came last May 26, for the LA Galaxy vs. Seattle.

Bobby Boswell also netted his first goal in his return to D.C. United, his first in MLS play since hitting the back of the net July 21, 2012, for the Houston Dynamo vs. Montréal.

“Last game we didn’t do a good job when we were up a man, but this time we did. This time, we kept the ball. We spread them out, and we finished our chances and that’s something that we haven’t done successfully this year,” said Franklin. “ … We’re unbeaten in our last five games and some of those games we should have won. Right now, our team has all the confidence in the world and we’re excited for this win, but it is a long season and hopefully it will be a successful one.”

Providence Park opened on April 14, 2011, in front of a sold-out crowd in the Timbers first-ever home match as an MLS team. The club proceeded to sell out 51 consecutive regular-season home games in the team’s first three MLS seasons. Last year, the club earned an 11-1-5 overall regular-season home record in 17 games, which was the best home record in MLS. Currently, the Tim-bers have compiled an MLS-club record 19-game unbeaten streak at Providence Park. For the 2014 season, the stadium’s capacity was expanded to 20,814.

Forward Gastón Fernández registered a first-half equalizer, goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made four saves and the Timbers controlled nearly 60 percent of the possession to earn a 1-1 draw against the Houston Dynamo on April 27 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. On the road for a second consecutive match, Portland dictated the pace for large portions against the Dynamo and extended their unbeaten streak against Houston to three consecutive matches (1-0-2), dating back to the 2012 season. Portland remains one of only three MLS teams that has not lost at BBVA Compass Stadium since it opened in 2012. Control-ling nearly 70 percent of the possession in the first half, Fernández netted the game-tying goal in the 33rd minute for the Timbers.

CONSECUTIVE REGULAR-SEASON HOME SELLOUTS:

CATEGORICAL WON-LOST-TIED HEAD COACH CALEB PORTERHead coach Caleb Porter guided the Portland Timbers on a record-setting, turna-round season in 2013, his first season in MLS and as the club’s head coach. He was announced as the Timbers head coach on Aug. 29, 2012, and joined the club ahead of the 2013 MLS campaign. Porter received the Slats Gill Award for Sportsperson of the Year at the Oregon Sports Awards on March 9, 2014, becoming the fourth soccer-related figure to receive the award since it was founded in 1957.

Porter was named the 2013 MLS Coach of the Year after leading Portland to a 14-5-15 (57pts) record, finishing the regular season in first place in the Western Conference and with the third-best record in the league – just two points shy of MLS Supporters’ Shield-winners New York Red Bulls. In 2013, the Timbers set new single-season club marks in points, wins, goals (54), goal differential (+21), shutouts (15) and fewest goals allowed (33).

Under Porter, the Timbers assembled one of the biggest turnaround seasons in MLS history in 2013. In comparison to Portland’s 2012 totals, the Timbers assembled a 23-point improvement in points and an MLS-record 43-goal improvement in goal differential. Portland’s five losses during the 2013 regular season are tied for the fewest in MLS history in a 34-game season. In 2013, the Timbers ranked third in MLS in goals scored and conceded the second-fewest goals at 33, giving the club a league-best, plus-21 goal differential. The club also led the league with 15 shutouts, tied for third-most in a single season in MLS history. During the regular season, the Timbers assembled one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MLS history at 15 games.

The Timbers recorded a 15-game, home unbeaten streak during the 2013 regular season, posting a league-best 11-1-5 home record at Providence Park. The club also set an MLS single-season record with 11 home shutouts. Among Porter’s achievements during the 2013 season, the club’s 57 points accrued are the most earned by a first-year head coach in MLS since the league’s inaugural season in 1996. Porter’s winning percentage (.632) in 2013 ranked among the best in league history for first-year MLS head coaches, and the Timbers’ 15-game unbeaten streak is the longest by an MLS head coach in his first full season at the helm.

Under Porter in 2013, Portland qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since joining the league in 2011. By defeating rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinal, the Tim-bers became just the fifth club in MLS history to reach the conference championship in their MLS Cup Playoff debut, and the first since Real Salt Lake in 2008. Additionally, the Timbers made their deepest run in club history in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2013 under Porter’s guidance, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.

Prior to joining the Timbers, Porter was one of the most successful coaches in NCAA history during his tenure as head coach at the University of Akron from 2006-12. He compiled a career mark of 123-18-17 at Akron and owned the highest winning percentage (.832) among all active Division I coaches. Porter garnered numerous honors while at Akron, including 2009 NSCAA National Coach of the Year.

From Kalamazoo, Mich., Porter led the Zips to back-to-back NCAA College Cup appearances in 2009 and 2010, and the school’s first national title in any sport in 2010. In all, he guided Akron to seven Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season championships, five MAC tournament titles and five consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament’s Round of 16 (2008-12). Porter set multiple NCAA records while at Akron, including a 48-match, home unbeaten streak (44-0-4) from 2008-11 and a 47-match unbeaten streak (44-0-3) in conference play from 2006-12.

Porter’s coaching career also includes time as the head coach of the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team during 2012 CONCACAF Olympic qualifying and he spent three years as an assistant coach on the U.S. U-18 National Team from 2009-11. Prior to joining Akron, Porter was an assistant coach for six years (2000-05) at Indiana University.

As a player, Porter was the 27th overall pick by the San Jose Clash in the 1998 MLS College Draft. He spent time with San Jose and the Tampa Bay Mutiny before a knee injury ended his professional playing career in 2000. Porter also played for the U.S. National B Team from 1996-97, winning a bronze medal at the 1997 World University Games.

He had a successful collegiate playing career at Indiana, where he was a three-year captain and a three-time All-Big Ten honoree. Porter led the Hoosiers to four conference titles, and four NCAA tourna-ment appearances. As a senior, Porter captained IU to 23 consecutive wins before losing to eventual national champion UCLA in the national semifinals and was the runner-up for the 1997 Hermann Trophy.

2014 SCHEDULE AND RESULTS (3-2-2)

All-Time Series D.C. United and the Portland Timbers have played four times in their history, which has resulted in an even 1-1-2 series. The Timbers have hosted D.C. United twice since joining the league in 2011, with United leading the series 1-0-1. At RFK stadium, United has gone 0-1-1 against the Oregon side. 4-Goal Performance Unbeaten in its last five games, D.C. United has moved into thirf place in the Eastern Conference with eleven points. United forced FC Dallas to drop its first road match last Saturday in a 4-1 victory at RFK Stadium. Fabian Espindola notched two goals and an assist, while defenders Bobby Boswell and Sean Franklin recorded their first tallies on the season. DCU last scored four goals on Aug. 22, 2012, beating the Chicago Fire 4-2. 5-Game Point Streak United’s current streak began at RFK Stadium on 3/29 with a tie against the Chicago Fire (2-2) and has continued with defeats over New England (2-0), New York (1-0) and Dallas (4-1) and with a 1-1 draw against Columbus. The Black-and-Red earned its eleventh point last Saturday at home against Dallas. D.C.’s last five-game point streak was in Sept.-Oct. 2012 with games against Chivas USA (1-0), Portland (1-1), Toronto FC (1-0), Columbus (3-2) and Chicago (1-1). Best Defense in the East? During its five-game unbeaten streak, D.C. United’s defense has been one of the best in the Eastern Conference. United is tied with Sporting Kansas City and New England Revolution with the least amount of goals allowed (four), and leads the East with fewest shots allowed on target (13). Espindola Continues Scoring Streak United veteran forward Fabian Espindola is now 12th overall on the all-time active players scoring list with 48 goals after scoring in the 45th and 69th minute against FC Dallas on 4/26. Espindola started the season 14th on the list and began his climb up the ranks with his first 2014 campaign goal against the Chicago Fire in a 2-2 draw on 3/29. In addition to his all-time success, Espindola is now tied for fourth in MLS this season in goals scored (four). Logging Minutes Two D.C. United players have played all 630 minutes for the club thus far in the regular season -- Bobby Boswell and Perry Kitchen. In addition, forward Fabian Espindola and defenders Cristian Fernandez, Sean Franklin and Jeff Parke have logged over 600 minutes. New Season, New Team After seven games, D.C. United’s record stands at 3-2-2, including five straight contests without a loss. Last season, United didn’t win its third regular season game until Aug. 3 against Montreal (3-1). DCU accomplished that feat last Saturday in its 4-1 win over FC Dallas. With one more victory, DCU will eclipse its win total for 2013. Last Time a DCU Player Scored Two Goals Fabian Espindola leads D.C. United in scoring with four goals on the season, two which came in last weekend’s 4-1 victory against FC Dallas. The last time a DCU player netted two goals in a single regular season match was on June 24, 2012, when midfielder Chris Pontius scored two of the clubs three goals against the New York Red Bulls in a 3-2 victory at Red Bull Arena.

Goal Scoring Success vs. Portland Among active players, forward Eddie Johnson is tied for second all-time in goals scored against the Portland Timbers (four). Forward Fabian Espindola is tied for fourth (three). All-Time Games Played vs. Portland Among active players, defender Sean Franklin is tied for sixth for all-time games played against the Portland Timbers (eight). D.C. and Portland Score Late In four matches between the clubs, four of D.C. United’s five goals (80%) have come in the second half, while four of Portland’s six (66%) have come during this period. Bill Hamid against Portland Hamid has started all four of the club’s matches against the Timbers. Among active goalkeepers, he is eighth all-time in saves against Portland (12). Andrew Dykstra – MLS Leader United goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra currently has the best goals against average (0.33) in MLS this season after stepping in for Bill Hamid and leading DCU on a three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1). In 270 minutes of action, Dykstra has allowed just one goal, which came on 4/19 in a 1-1 draw against Columbus. Chris Korb Makes Season Debut Defender Chris Korb made his 2014 MLS debut with the Black-and-Red last Saturday in the team's 4-1 win against FC Dallas. Korb came on in the 74th minute for Sean Franklin and saw 16 minutes of action against the Texas side. Korb was second in games and starts (30) as well as minutes (2,700) last season, and in four seasons with the club, he has appeared in 69 games (64 starts) and registered five assists while logging 5,787 minutes. Familiar Face For Kitchen and Korb D.C. United midfielder Perry Kitchen and defender Chris Korb are facing their former University of Akron coach, Caleb Porter, who is in his second season as head coach of the Portland Timbers. Both Kitchen and Korb were in the starting lineup as Porter guided the Zips to the 2010 NCAA Men’s National Championship. Kitchen played in all 25 matches during 2010, his one and only year at the university. Korb additionally played in all 25 matches that year as a senior and was part of a defensive unit that posted 11 shutouts. Game-Winning Goals for DCU players Among active players, forward Eddie Johnson is fifth for all-time game winning goals (24). Midfielder Chris Rolfe is tied for ninth (14), midfielder Davy Arnaud and forward Fabian Espindola are tied for 12th (13) and midfielder Chris Pontius is 19th (10). Collin Martin Participates in U.S. U-21 National Team Camp In April, D.C. United homegrown midfielder Collin Martin participated in the United States Under-21 Men’s National Team (MNT) Training Camp at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif. The camp consisted of three days of training before culminating with a friendly against Club Tijuana, which U.S. won, 2-1.

GAME NOTES

Davy Arnaud’s 300th Game D.C. United’s second home test against the Chicago Fire marked veteran midfielder Davy Arnaud’s 300th regular season game. The 33-year-old made his debut back in 2002 with the Kansas City Wizards, now Sporting Kansas City. Arnaud became the 25th player in MLS history to reach the career milestone. United acquired the versatile midfielder from Montreal Impact in exchange for an international roster spot for the 2014 and 2015 MLS seasons.
