Market Dynamics
SSDs are a disruptive technology that are forcing aparadigm shift in an otherwise stagnant storage seg-ment once dominated by hard disk drives (HDDs).SSDs have become one of the fastest growing marketsegments in the technology sector. As with any newtechnology, enterprises SSDs were initially brought tomarket by industry innovators and were deployedby early adopters. The market is now entering the nextstage of its evolution by bringing enterprise-class SSDsto growing numbers of IT applications. To successfullymake this transition, the technology must advance evenfurther along the price/density curve.

Future of Flash Technology
To understand the benets of CellCare Technology, itis rst necessary to review the dierent types of ashmemory currently available and then take a look at thefuture of ash technology.
The three types of NAND ash memory include single-level cell (SLC), multi-level cell (MLC) and so-called“enhanced” MLC (eMLC). The essential dierencebetween SLC and MLC/eMLC is the number of bitsthat stored per NAND cell. SLC stores 1 bit of data percell, while MLC and eMLC store 2 bits of data per cell.Table 1 captures the main dierences between thesetypes of ash memory.
By denition, SLC NAND ash is a more reliable tech-nology, supporting more than 100,000 write cycles percell. This characteristic makes it the ash technologyof choice for enterprise applications, with SLC ash-based SSDs providing a useful life of 10-20 years, basedon manufacturer specications. MLC ash memory isless reliable and withstands no more than 3,000 writecycles per cell in 3xnm technology. The limited writeendurance of MLC ash makes it well suited for con-sumer applications, where the media is primarily usedfor reading. As shown in Table 1, eMLC NAND ashdelivers marginally better write endurance, but at theexpense of some performance.
At rst glance it may seem that eMLC ash memorycould be used to produce enterprise-grade SSDs, buta more detailed analysis proves otherwise. The reasonis that eMLC ash is created by the process of die-screening consumer MLC ash for marginally higherendurance, or by static tweaking of ash process para-meters such as increasing erase time to slow wear-outcharacteristics and by increasing program time. Theresult is higher endurance, with slower performance.
This slowdown renders eMLC ash unsuitable for trueenterprise-class applications.

endurance gaps at the expense of lower performance, since multiple read retries are required due to in-creased bit errors during the life of the media.

space, provides economies that makes it veryattractive from a density and cost perspective. Performance, reliability, availability and endurance ofMLC-based SSDs are directly dependent on the designof the SSD controller.
Essentially, the controller is the brain of the SSD and

determines whether the SSD can be used in enterpriseapplications requiring 24/7/365 uninterrupted op-erations under heavy read and write workloads.
• Improved endurance of MLC media; • Enhanced performance; • Reduced media access error rate and consistent performance over useful life of the drive.

Proactive cell management throughout the life of theSSD provides improved reliability and reduced bit errorrates. In addition, CellCare Technology employs advan-ced signal processing techniques to dynamically man-

CellCare Technology also incorporates controller-based media access management, which dynamicallyadjusts over the lifetime of the media to reduce theUncorrectable Bit Error Rate (UBER). Advanced ECCtechniques enable a higher degree of protectionagainst media errors, leading to improved endurance

alternatives enables OEMs to deploy these devices inthe most demanding enterprise environments, leadingto improved performance, higher reliability and reducedpower, space, and energy consumption.
All of these factors contribute to lower total cost of owner-ship in SSD implementations in next-generation serversand data centers compared to systems relying on legacyhard-drive technologies. STEC continues to address theneeds of next-generation data centers by reducing
enterprise-class SSDs.
