MLA Referencing Style (8th Edition)
The Modern Language Association (MLA) is one of several styles for academic writing. This guide provides basic guidelines and examples for citing sources using the MLA Style. General guidelines for in-text citations and reference list are included in this manual.
Taylor’s Libraries

IN-TEXT CITATIONS • MLA uses the parenthetical type of referencing. That is, citations in the text of a paper point to the alphabetical Works Cited list that appears at the end of the paper. The in-text citations (generally) appear in the following format:
Author or editor’s family name (i.e. surname/last name) Title in italic Page number(s)
Example: (McCaron 58) • Provide the author and specific page citation (in the case of verse, provide line numbers) in the text, and include a complete reference on the
Works Cited page.
Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and semicolons should appear after the parenthetical citation. Question marks and exclamation points should appear within the quotation marks if they are a part of the quoted passage but after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of your text.
Example:
McCaron argued that “nursing staff …” (184)
In a recent study by McCaron (184), qualifications of school-leavers were analyzed …

When citing publications by up to three authors or editors, all are listed: Citing multiple sources For a source with three or fewer authors, list the authors' last names in the text or in the parenthetical citation: For publications by more than three authors or editors, cite the first name listed in the work followed et al. or list all the last names:
Example:
Recent educational research (Lewis and Jones 58) has shown that…
In a newly published survey Hill, Smith and Reid (93) argue that…
It has been found that “newly qualified teachers are more likely to become involved in extracurricular activities than their longer serving colleagues”
(Hill, Smith and Reid 142).
Example:
Coats et al. stated that ……. (361).
As explained by Adams, Anderson, Archuleta and Smith Kudin, the difference in dining styles…….(220).
Example:
Smith, Yang, and Moore argue that tougher gun control is not needed in the United States (76).

Setting out quotations To indicate short quotations (fewer than four typed lines of prose or three lines of verse) in your text, enclose the quotation within double
quotation marks. Provide the author and specific page citation (in the case of verse, provide line numbers) in the text, and include a complete reference on the Works Cited page.
For quotations that are more than four lines of prose or three lines of verse, place quotations in a free-standing block of text and omit quotation marks. Start the quotation on a new line, with the entire quote indented one inch from the left margin; maintain double-spacing. Only indent the first line of the quotation by an additional quarter inch if you are citing multiple paragraphs. Your parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark. When quoting verse, maintain original line breaks. (You should maintain double-spacing throughout your essay.)
Example:
According to some, dreams express "profound aspects of personality" (Foulkes 184), though others disagree.
According to Foulkes's study, dreams may express "profound aspects of personality" (184).
Example:
Nelly Dean treats Heathcliff poorly and dehumanizes him throughout her narration:
They entirely refused to have it in bed with them, or even in their room, and I had no more sense, so, I put it on
the landing of the stairs, hoping it would be gone on the morrow. By chance, or else attracted by hearing his
voice, it crept to Mr. Earnshaw's door, and there he found it on quitting his chamber. Inquiries were made as to
how it got there; I was obliged to confess, and in recompense for my cowardice and inhumanity was sent out of
the house. (Bronte 78).

Works Cited
• The Reference List should appear at the end of your work on a separate page. • Only include references you have cited in your work. • The list is called “Works Cited,” not “References” or “Bibliography.” • The entries are listed in alphabetical order by the authors’ surnames. • If there is no author, the title is used. Titles are alphabetized according to the first word after “a,” “an,” or “the.” • Use the full first name of the authors, not the initials. • All major words in titles of works are capitalized. • Titles of articles are in quotation marks; titles of books, journals, and websites are italicized. • Hanging indents—the first line of each entry is not indented, but every line beyond the first of each entry must be indented half an
inch. • The entire Works Cited should be double-spaced. • Use the conjunction "and," not an ampersand [&], when listing multiple authors of a single work. • Capitalize the first word and all other principal words of the titles and subtitles of cited works listed. (Do not capitalize articles,
prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, or the "to" in infinitives.)
• Shorten the publisher's name; for example, omit articles, business abbreviations (Co., Inc.), and descriptive words (Press, Publisher).
• If the Works Cited contains more than one work by the same author, the first entry contains the author’s full name. In subsequent entries, the author’s name is replaced by three hyphens: Davies, Robertson. The Manticore. Penguin Group, 1972.
---. Rebel Angels. Penguin Group, 1997.
---. Tempest Tost. Penguin Group, 2006.
• Pagination: Use the abbreviations p. or pp. to designate page numbers.
