The Hours of Service (HOS) solution by MiX Telematics is a comprehensive electronic toolkit that enables the efficient monitoring of drivers’ on-duty time. The solution works in conjunction with MiX Telematics’ on-board computer and online tracking and monitoring software.

HOS by MiX Telmatics is designed to allow drivers to effectively manage and reduce fatigue, therefore improving safety performance. Along with the key benefit of improved safety, fleet operators are able to comply with HOS regulations across different states as well as different countries – merely with the click of a button. It offers a paperless method that simplifies adherence to HOS rules. The HOS solution is a global state-of-the-art innovation, yet it is locally relevant. Although driver-centric, the solution is designed to minimise interference with the driver. It enables operators to improve overall efficiency, while reducing business risk related to safety and fatigue.

The Hours of Service solution forms part of the broader MiX SafeDrive offering by MiX Telematics, which assists customers with the implementation of globally proven road safety strategies.

How does it work?

The MiX Telematics HOS solution extracts information from a combination of vehicle telematics data and electronic driver input. It allows for a real-time, driver-centric view of accurate information. Drivers can log on and off duty, regardless of whether they are in a vehicle or not. They can also indicate other statuses like rest stops or customer site visits.

Using a driver plug, the driver can log in for duty in one of three ways: via a MiX Telematics in-cab display, the MiX Rovi II; at a location-based PC kiosk that features the ‘HOS Timeclock’ interface; or via a mobile device. The solution is flexible, accommodating different types of operations as well as vehicle types.

The need for managing HOS

A growing number of countries and regions are incorporating driving hour regulations into their laws, requiring technology enablers. In addition, more industries are committing to the regulation of working hours, in order to improve driver safety and compliance. The HOS solution by MiX Telematics is ideal for operators who are actively trying to increase productivity, better manage safety-related liability and enhance customer service.

Driver status data is automatically and manually input into the HOS system using multiple technologies. This improves data accuracy and integrity.

Provides a location-based data entry and alerting point for drivers to view and manage their HOS status using their driver plug.

Support for regulatory-compliant driver plugs as a portable storage device for HOS data.

Drivers receive alerts in real-time from in-cab or from the MyMiX Advisor application, as to when they are about to exceed, or have exceeded, the driving hours permitted by their assigned rule-set.

Drivers, managers and authorities can view driver log data in real-time as a graph or as a table summary. Driver status data can be edited for specific scenarios.

Managers can monitor all aspects of HOS operations and compliance, through a single web browser interface. Detailed and accurate information is integrated from the HOS data sources and combined with vehicle telematics data to provide a complete picture of on-duty activities for each driver and vehicle.

Summary and detailed HOS reporting is available through MiX Insight Reports including IFTA reports.

Drivers can log non-driving status information into the system using the multiple data entry points. Details such as trailer hooks and invoice data capture can also be input, along with capturing vehicle inspections and logging exemptions to driving hours violations, for example, emergency or poor weather conditions.

Support for all required regulatory HOS rule-sets. The HOS rules engine also allows for company-specific HOS rules to be easily implemented.
