Developmental AreasSocial Children will be working in small groups and interacting. They

will be engaged through discussion of both the book and apples.

Language Students will be listening to the book The Mixed Up

Chameleon By Eric Carle. Students will be provided with an opportunity to hear new

vocabulary words.Emotional How do the students feel about trying the different types of

apples. Which one do they like? Which ones did they not like? They will discuss how everyone is a unique individual and

people should value their differences. Sensory Motor Students will analyze the different apples by sight, smell, feel, and

they can even hear the sound it makes when taking a bite from it. They will hear it when they eat it themselves, and even in the song. This gives them a sense of the texture.

Subject AreasMath Students will graph what apples they liked and disliked. We will create a graph

as a whole class. Students will be able to learn about patterns through color. Science Students will be learning the physical features of the apples such

as the core, stem, seeds, skin, etc. Language Arts They will be listening to The Mixed Up Chameleon By Eric Carle as a read-

aloud. Students will write down their thoughts about each apple in a double journal.

I will provide them with a journal page that has pictures of the apples on the left side so students can write whether they liked it or not. As for Kindergarten emergent writers vary so it can be done with yes/no’s, smiley/frown faces, etc .

Music Students will listen and sing a song about different apples. They

will be able to name different types of apples by the end of the song.

Page 6: Mixed up Apples

Procedures• First read the book The Mixed Up Chameleon.

• Ask students how they felt when the chameleon wanted to look like someone else. Why do you think he wanted to be another animal? Once he got his wish, was he happy?

• After reading the book, now it is time to bring out the apples already pre-washed.

• Show the class different types of apples. Have the students explain how all of the apples look different in size, and color. Are there any other characteristics that make them different?

Page 7: Mixed up Apples

Procedures• Cut the apple in half vertically. Show the class that when they cut the

apple, there are 5 seeds in the middle that create a star. Cut the other apples and show them that they all have the star in the middle. The teacher will cut the apples in front of the class.

• Remind the class how all the apples looked different, but once you cut into the middle, they were all the same

• Correlate this concept to people. Explain how everyone is a unique individual. Everyone has different qualities that make them better people. But point out to the students that we are all alike inside, just like the apples. We all have feelings and emotions.

• Divide the class into small groups. Have all students wash their hands and all surfaces.

• Cut the remaining apples and divide them evenly to the students providing them each with a variety of different apples.

Page 8: Mixed up Apples

Procedures• Have the students try each of them if they would like.

Encourage the students to try each one because they are going to have a chance to share their thoughts with the class by creating a graph of the ones they liked and disliked.

• Next, we will listen to a song about apples and the students will gain an understanding on how many different apples there are! By the end of the song I will ask if they can provide me with 5 names of apples.

• The teacher can further the lesson on apples by explaining how they grow, the parts of an apple (Stem, core, seeds, skin, etc.) The nutritional value.

THE MIXED UP CHAMELEON BY ERIC CARLE

•Questions to ask while reading:•Do you believe he will be happy? p. 17 •What animal will the chameleon wish to be next? p. 26 •How many different things did the chameleon wish to be before he realized he liked being himself?

The chameleon though: How small I am, how weak! I wish I couldbe big and white like a polar bear, handsome like a flamingo, smart like a fox, swim like a fish, run like a deer, see like a giraffe, hide like a turtle, strong like an elephant, funny like a seal, or simply be like people. Even though he got his wish, was he even happy in the end?
