Pocketful of LoveOne of the things I love most about being an artist is the ability to
share m y art with friends and family by making them special gif ts. I
love stitching up little fa bric notes, adding one of m y quirky vintage
photos and finishing it off with a handwritten message. For this pro j-
ect, stitch up a fabric app le with a “kiss to make it better” hidden inside
and then tuck it into an o ld pocket to give to someone who needs it.

10 Now assemble the apple halves. Stack the embroidered
apple piece on top of an apple outside batting piece,
and then on top of an outside red piece (right sides out).
Stitch around the outside edge of the white core piece
several times. Do not be careful to stitch on top of your
previous stitches. Go wild and crazy like you did when you
were coloring as a child! Repeat with the photo side of the
apple to create two quilted apple halves.
11 Join the two halves together so they open and close like
a book. Cut two 1½"×2" rectangles from a piece of green
textured fabric. Place the two apple halves next to each
other with core sides up about half an inch apart. Pin the
green rectangles onto the apple halves placing one on
top and one on bottom, wrong sides together. It should
look like you are building a bridge between the two apple
halves. Straight stitch down the middle of the squares
and then sew around the outside edge of the squares
several times.
12 It’s time to make a leaf to add
another something-special!
Start by stacking two 4"×3"
rectangles of green textured
fabric right sides out with a piece
of batting in the middle. Follow
the steps in the Sew Simple
Shapes section of Chapter 1 to
use thread to “draw” a leaf on the
fabric sandwich. rim about an
⅛” outside of the stitch outline to
make the leaf.
13 o make the stem of the apple,
cut a 1½” piece of green ribbon.
Place the leaf on top of the stem
and hand stitch them down to the
inner left side of the apple so that
the knot is on top of the leaf. Ten
sew a button on top of the leaf so
the knot and stitches are hidden.
14 Using fabric markers and a
white gel pen, write on the
outside of the apple. Here, I’ve
written “OPEN” on the outside of
the book and “PULL” on the green
binding piece —the binding will
stick out of the pocket and help
build anticipation for your note!
