S4J0r Outside of County *5.00 BY: GARY AUXIER Frankfort Watchline Lest anyone thinks politics is just a series of boring speeches, it seems appropriate at this point in the 1975 political scene to review some of the lighter things. In the interest of humaniz- ing a sometimes dreary subject, Frankfort Watchline announced its first political awards. Worst Standing Joke Award - to Atty. Gen. Ed Hancock, who. when he tells people he is a bachelor, a not always beneficial marital status for thus in the political life, he says. "I come from a long line of bachelors." No Business Like Show Business Award - to Pike County Judge Wayne Ruther- ford. who hired a clown in full uniform to pass out the candidate's balloons at the state high school basketball tourna- ment. Fairgrounds security personnel apparently concurred in this award by throwing the clown off the premises. Song of the Year Award - to country singer Glen Camp- bell. who brought the house down at the Julian Carroll for Governor kickoff . celebration with a timely rendition of "Having My Baby" in honor of mother-to-be Charlann Carroll. Most Enlightening State- ment Award -- t o chicken tycoon John Y. Brown. Jr.. who Do what your mother told you, Tuck your money away in a Savtngs Account Where it's safe from fire, loss and temptation increases at a steady rare v o* interest And rs msured by F 0 I C Mother knows best. The Bank of Mt. Vernon RMC 'Going one step further* introduced Carroll at the same kkkoff party as a man who (till has time for his family. Five-Cent Cigar Award - to Nicky Nicholson, campaign manager for Ewart Johnson, who finally got candidate Johnson to quit smoking thoae big, black ctear*. *f, rallfes. Nicky was going to Iry to change Joinowo 2 'bridgtj t frva further by getting rid of those colorful Hawaiian print ties until they auctioned one off for $600 at a fund raiaer. Anybody want to buy a cigar? Blunt Instrument Award - To Agriculture Commiaaioher Wendell Butler, who. when asked about his decision to take up Gov. Julian Carroll's offer of a highly-paid position in the Carroll administration in lieu of making another run for super- in tend net of public instruction began his answer "The deal was " "Make No Miatake" Award - once again, to Wendell Butler, who came upstairs in the Capitol Building to press row arm-in- arm with Dr. James Graham, who filed a (ew minutes earlier for superintendent of public instruction. "I'd like you to meet my good friend.... " Musical Titles Award - to State Senator Bill Sullivan, who. since he was president pro-tem of t h e state senate, decided after Julian Carroll moved to the governor's office he is properly acting lieutenant governor, and called his first official press conference as acting governor the first time Carroll left the stale. Cutzpah Award -• hands down, to Jefferson County Judge Tod-I Hollenbach's pro- fessional advance men. The young judge had decided he would hold a press conference in the rotunda o( the Capitol Building, in front of the office of. Gov. Julian Carroll, his op- ponent for the Democratic nomination lor governor. Seeking a portable podium from which to deliver his remarks, they asked the tour guide at the front desk, who suggested maybe the governor's office might have one. One of the team wandered into the office of Carroll's press secretary, John Nichols, to ask for a podium from which Hollenback could deliver some scathing remarks about Carroll. Nichols, his mouth hanging open in disbelief, said he didn't know where-it was. "1 suppose could: have offered them the use of the governor's conference room," Nichols remarked later in the day.
