NAPLAN Goes Digital - Testing the Test The Department of EducaƟon are planning to begin tesƟng Year 3 and Year 5 on the NAPLAN tests in a digital, online format beginning next year. In preparaƟon, the Department are asking all schools to trial the online environment this year in the hope that it will uncover any problems. During the week of 21st to 25th August 2017 all Year 3 and Year 5 will sit the NAPLAN Online School Readiness Test. Year 5 will sit a wriƟng test. Both Year 3 and Year 5 will sit a test of language, reading and numeracy tasks. This is a test of the system only, no results will be issued to families. We will inform the Year 3 and Year 5 students that there will be no pressure on them during these trial tests and ask that parents reinforce this. Should parents be concerned or would like further informaƟon, please see Mrs Penn. NAPLAN Goes Digital - Headphones Required As part of the NAPLAN Online School Readiness tests all students will need access to a set of headphones that can be plugged into a headphone jack on a computer or a USB slot. The school will have headphones available, however should you wish your child to use his/ her own headphones, this will be acceptable. Headphones will be required for the week of the 21st 25 August 2017. A note indicaƟng which day/ days during that week the headphones will be used will be sent home next week. Big Finale for Education Week Last Friday morning, a very chilly wintery day indeed, saw many characters brave the cold in the name of celebraƟng both EducaƟon and Book Week. Once again, the community of MiƩagong stood proud, in large numbers cheering as the students paraded their homemade, invenƟve, creaƟve or authenƟc costumes. CongratulaƟons to Mrs Gardiner and her team in organising such a fun event. More informaƟon and photos about this can be found elsewhere in the newsleƩer. P&C Embark on Literary Fundraiser You might be forgiven for wondering why there are 6 Ɵns with photos of 6 teachers in the front oce. This year our creaƟve P&C commiƩee are running a new fundraising iniƟaƟve. The students are being asked to vote for the teachers on the Ɵns to feature in a custom ‘choose your own adventure’ book called The Art Show That Came to MiƩagong. Students vote by placing 5 cent coins in the Ɵn or Ɵns of their choice. At the end of a 2 week voƟng period 4 of the teachers with the largest number of coins will feature as the main characters in the book. The P&C will keep the 5 cent coins as fundraising. The books will be on sale later in the year and the P&C receive funds for the sale of the books also. These books would make a great keepsake for current students, a liƩle reminder of the teachers they enjoyed during their Ɵme at MiƩagong Public School, perhaps a birthday present or Christmas Stocking ller? Many of the students have chosen to also prac ce before school and during lunch. This week we will be joining with other schools from our area for a Cluster Rehearsal at Bowral Public School. The organiser Susan Sukka, from the DET Arts Department, will be training our group in prepara on for the concert. We were fortunate enough to perform the song ‘Six Ribbons’, by Jon English, for the first me during Educa on Week. A huge thank you to our audience for their support on the day, as I’m sure you will agree that the students performed beau fully.

Science Fair The Stage Three Science Fair hit Mi agong on Tuesday and was enjoyed by the junior scien sts and their many admirers. There were some very inven ve and though ul projects presented this year. Nothing was safe from the enquiring minds of our inquisi ve scien sts. Chooks were hypno sed, the family cat fa ened up with food presented in different coloured plates, liquids were forced to float upon other liquids, electrons were rubbed off balloons so they would s ck to hair and faces, colours were made to combine to form white light, hot air balloons were lodged in the fans high in the ceiling, and on and on. It was a ripper of a day. Thanks to all the students who took the challenge in good spirits and ran with their ideas to contribute to a great day and thanks to all the Mums and Dads who helped their young scien sts make their ideas a reality. The Julius Sumner‐Miller Science prizes this year go to Dhyana and Thomas for their back‐pack desk and to Arsha for the brilliant mechanical arm, built using syringes as hydraulic cylinders.
