Newsletter - March 2020 The Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reection (MISTRA) is pleased to share with you its rst Newsletter for 2020. At the time of writing this newsletter, South Africa is ghting the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the country is operating under a state of disaster, anxiety and uncertainty, it has become even more crucial to support our economy. For this reason, even during this “business unusual phase” we would still like to update you on the work of MISTRA. As an Institute, we have made the decision to continue our business with as little interruption as possible. The year 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of MISTRA’s existence and we are extremely delighted to celebrate this milestone with you. As we begin our journey towards our new growth trajectory, we remain focused on our pursuits as the strategic ‘go-to’ think tank through enhanced impact of our core research, facilitation of social compacting and scenario planning. After the COVID-19 crisis, we will be looking forward to celebrating MISTRA’s 10th anniversary with you. We will share plans for this with you in due course. Message from Executive Director Joel Netshitenzhe

The spread of the COVID-19 has now reached a critical phase in ourcountry which has necessitated that institutions communities andindividuals act decisively to contain the virus During this time ofheightened concern the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reection(MISTRA) would like to assure you that we will do our best to ensure ourbusiness continues with minimal interruptions

As of the 27th March 2020 MISTRA management has requested all its stato work remotely from their homes and implement all measures that havebeen recommended by the President Minister of Health NICD and WHO tolimit the spread of COVID-19

Consequently we have postponed our upcoming major public events andhave migrated all other engagements to virtual platforms We hope thatthese measures will help ensure the well-being of our sta stakeholdersand community at large

Our sta will be working at full capacity and have the tools and resourcesto support our clients external researchers and partners from remotelocations We have also put in place protocols to mitigate any economic riskthat COVID-19 may pose to the sustainability of the Institute

MISTRA is of the rm view that the lsquoburning platformrsquo of COVID-19 can serveas a basis for South Africa to intensify eorts towards social compactingbeyond health matters so all of us can help lift our society onto a highergrowth and development trajectory

MISTRA published a research report titled Epidemics and the Health ofAfrican Nations in July last year The research examines Africarsquos vulnerabilityto disease and the interrelationship between disease and political andsocioeconomic contexts As South Africa and other parts of the worldconfront the COVID-19 pandemic we remain concerned about eects thiscrisis will have on the country and the globe

MISTRArsquos publication oers policy recommendations and ndings on thefollowing issues which may be relevant to Africarsquos response to the COVID-19pandemic

On the 3rd February 2020 MISTRA launched its Priority Research Project(PRP) titled lsquoAfrica and the World Navigating Shifting Geopolitics at the FutureAfrica Campus of the University of Pretoria The MISTRA publication is co-edited by Dr Philani Mthembu and Francis Kornegay Jr and analyses theshifting global landscape from the point of view of challenges andopportunities facing the African continent

The authors in the study seek to contribute to discourse on geopoliticsfrom a perspective that is currently lacking ndash that is locating lsquoIsland Africarsquoas a strategic centre in terms of its geographic location its endowmentsand its long-term potential

Dr Naledi Pandor Minister of International Relations and Cooperation(DIRCO) delivered the keynote address at the launch

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) commissioned MISTRA todrive the process of facilitating the forging of a social compact among keyrole players in South African society as a way of promoting social cohesionand nation building MISTRA was commissioned to provide research oncountry case studies of social compacts The Institute also helped tofacilitate dialogue on social cohesion amongst various key role players Thedialogue was aimed at obtaining a broad consensus on the role thatdierent sectors can play in promoting social cohesion and nation building

On the 6th and 7th February MISTRA assisted DAC in hosting a SocialCompact Convention at Saint George Hotel The objective of the conventionwas to gather representatives of various sectors of society to reect onsocial cohesion nation-building and conict resolution and to identifypillars of a social compact Leaders in attendance included formerPresident of South Africa Mr Kgalema Motlanthe Minister and DeputyMinister of the Department of Arts and Culture Mr Nathi Mthethwa andMs Nocawe Mafu respectively the National House of Traditional LeadersChairperson and Deputy Chairperson Inkosi Sipho Mahlangu andInkosikazi Nomandla Mhlauli In attendance was also President of theBlack Business Council (BBC) Mr Sandile Zungu former Justice YvonneMokgoro and other leaders representing labour academia governmentcivil society and business

The Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) commissioned MISTRA todrive the process of facilitating the forging of a social compact among keyrole players in South African society as a way of promoting social cohesionand nation building MISTRA was commissioned to provide research oncountry case studies of social compacts The Institute also helped tofacilitate dialogue on social cohesion amongst various key role players Thedialogue was aimed at obtaining a broad consensus on the role thatdierent sectors can play in promoting social cohesion and nation building

On the 6th and 7th February MISTRA assisted DAC in hosting a SocialCompact Convention at Saint George Hotel The objective of the conventionwas to gather representatives of various sectors of society to reect onsocial cohesion nation-building and conict resolution and to identifypillars of a social compact Leaders in attendance included formerPresident of South Africa Mr Kgalema Motlanthe Minister and DeputyMinister of the Department of Arts and Culture Mr Nathi Mthethwa andMs Nocawe Mafu respectively the National House of Traditional LeadersChairperson and Deputy Chairperson Inkosi Sipho Mahlangu andInkosikazi Nomandla Mhlauli In attendance was also President of theBlack Business Council (BBC) Mr Sandile Zungu former Justice YvonneMokgoro and other leaders representing labour academia governmentcivil society and business

Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Dr Naledi Pandor

On the 3rd February 2020 MISTRA launched its Priority Research Project(PRP) titled lsquoAfrica and the World Navigating Shifting Geopolitics at the FutureAfrica Campus of the University of Pretoria The MISTRA publication is co-edited by Dr Philani Mthembu and Francis Kornegay Jr and analyses theshifting global landscape from the point of view of challenges andopportunities facing the African continent

The authors in the study seek to contribute to discourse on geopoliticsfrom a perspective that is currently lacking ndash that is locating lsquoIsland Africarsquoas a strategic centre in terms of its geographic location its endowmentsand its long-term potential

Dr Naledi Pandor Minister of International Relations and Cooperation(DIRCO) delivered the keynote address at the launch
