As a single mom trying to raise two daughters and now a grandchild, she’s gone through a few ups and downs. And she says that one of the constants in the chaos has been the love and support of the people of FCUMC. It’s one of the reasons Missy, who has more than 20 years of experience as a social worker, is so excited for the opportunity to give back as FCUMC’s new church and community worker. Missy began conversations with FCUMC Senior Pastor Randy Frye about the possibility of serving the church on a volunteer basis a few months ago and after approval from the Staff-Parish Committee has begun volunteering two days per week. “This church has given me so much,” Missy said. “I was thinking that this is a different side of me that I want other people to see. It is awesome to be able to give back.” Missy will be working with the pastoral staff to serve members of our community who are looking for assistance and will also be a resource for church members who can benefit from the expertise of a social worker. She will also serve as a liaison to local ministry partners. She has agreed to volunteer for one year before returning to the work force. She hopes to be able to connect her passion for social work with her faith by securing a position in a church. “I get to do what I love and do what God has given me, to serve people, and that is awesome,” Missy said. “I think there are so many things a social worker can do in a church. I want to be able to show this is a worthwhile thing and be able to do this professionally. The whole thing is great. I get to do it in a place I am comfortable with people I love and care about. That is great. What a chance.” Missy will serve at the FCUMC office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. She can be contacted at [email protected] or 689-5175. Pastor Cornered

The words come from my favorite Charles Wesley hymn, and they read this way:

“Long my imprisoned spirit lay, fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quickening ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; my chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth and followed thee.”

Those words give powerful imagery to the liberating power of Jesus as well as the determined steps into a new life. Each week at Celebrate Recovery we are seeing those words come to life in a new way. . . as men and women make the decision to begin their journey into recovery and experience the loving and liberating power of Jesus. Celebrate Recovery is a Christ-centered approach to helping people break free from addiction, dependency, as well as the lingering hurts of life. Seven churches in our community have joined together to offer this much-needed ministry, and working together with those church is an additional blessing to all that God is doing through Celebrate Recovery

My prayer is that you will be part of this opportunity. For some…this may be the open door for you to experience the chain-breaking, life transforming power of God. For others there will be opportunities to serve: as greeters, meal servers, small group leaders, ushers or worship hosts. Still others may want to come simply to support your friends. If you can’t be with us on Tuesday, your prayer support and your financial support are also needed.

Celebrate Recovery meets every Tuesday at the old Smithwood School on Tazewell Pike. Dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. with worship at 7:00 p.m. and small groups at 8:00 p.m. If you have any questions, give me a call at 689-5175. . . or just plan to stop by next Tuesday and take a look at how chains are falling off, hearts are being set free, and new folk are rising up to follow Jesus.

Save the Date: November 1

UMW will host the “Getting to Know You Variety Show,” which will feature some of FCUMC’s most talented members!

Randy Frye, Senior PastorLay Leadership The ministry of the laity is the work of mission or ministry to which each believer is called. As Christians we are all called to this ministry– not just clergy. Each of us has a responsibility to proclaim the Good News and reach out to others in love. Together, we work as the body of Christ using our unique gifts, interests and experiences to support our church and church family.

Are you willing to be a part of FCUMC’s mission of “making disciples and changing lives?” How can you use your gifts, talents and time to serve FCUMC? What ministries are you passionate about? Do you have a heart of service? The committee on lay leadership wants you to prayerfully consider these questions during September.

On Sunday, September 7 and 14 FCUMC will share the Ministry Opportunities booklet. The booklet is a tool for you to use in discerning where God is calling you to serve. There are opportunities to serve on various committees at FCUMC and opportunities to volunteer for “hands-on” ministries. If you are already serving at FCUMC please use this as a time to prayerfully consider if you would like to continue serving and indicate so in the Ministry Opportunities booklet. The booklet serves as a survey to gauge interest levels and assist the committee on lay leadership in placing people in ministry and service.

You will have an opportunity to make a commitment of your time and talents during worship on Sunday, September 28 as you turn in your Ministry Opportunity booklet. For questions about serving or the Ministry Opportunities booklet contact lay leader, Mark Biagi at 281-9795 or Senior Pastor Randy Frye at 689-5175.

Resources for the GrievingGrief is hard. We don’t want to do it and yet the only way we can receive the healing God wants to give us is to go through the hard work of grieving our loss. As you can see, we have experienced a difficult season of grief and loss. Many long-time saints of FCUMC have earned rest from their labors in the last several months. We celebrate their lives of faith and their ultimate reward, yet we also miss them and their presence in our lives. If you are struggling to cope with grief, here are some resources that we can offer to help you receive the healing you need: Lament for a Son, Nicholas Wolterstoff: This book, written by a father grieving the loss of his son, has stood the test of time in helping people as they wrestle with the pain of their own loss. Part Biblical testimony, part personal memoir, part lament, we highly recommend this book. GriefShare: GriefShare is a wonderful resource if you want to connect with other people in our area in journeying through grief. Many local churches, including FCUMC, provide Griefshare programs throughout the year. You can find those classes through their website at www.griefshare.org. Pastoral Conversations: If you simply need to talk and process your journey through grief with one of our pastors, you may call the church office at 689-5175 and ask to speak to Randy, Daniel or Amy. We would also be happy to connect you with a Stephen Minister if you prefer.

Baptism

Everett Deyton was baptized July 27 in The Journey. Also pictured are his parents, Edwin and Audrey Deyton.

The Party

On August, 2 many who are unable to worship at FCUMC regularly joined together for “The Party.” Fellowship, food and fun were enjoyed by all. Thank you to the many who served and planned this event.
