-The HiSET® Program’s Writing Essay Tips to Remember:
21
Prompts will differ, but the task is uniform – write a fully developed essay supporting a position with relevant
ideas and reasons Depending solely or too heavily on ideas from the provided
texts with no additional explanation or interpretation can warrant a lower score.
Test takers must provide ideas and examples from their own experience, not just repeat the provided texts.
Responses should take a position on the issue; however, aresponse will not be penalized for arguing the advantages ofboth positions.
The response’s ability to express and support IDEAS is the key focus.
- 22
Key Elements on Which to Focus:
Development, elaboration and support! Weave together skillfully the test taker’s original
ideas and examples with evidence (quoted orparaphrased) from the provided texts
Address at least one counterclaim thoroughly Introduction and conclusion Sentence variety and word choice Transitions, both at the beginnings of paragraphs
and within paragraphs Write in complete sentences (avoiding fragments
and run-ons)
