MISSOULA OSPREY GAME NOTES LET’S SEE THE EARLY OFFENSE: Through two games, Missoula is one of only two teams in the Pioneer League to have three or more doubles, triples, and home runs on the season. The other team being Great Falls, who has played three games. Eddie Hernandez is tied for the most doubles in the league at two, while there are only six players in the league who have a triple, three of those on the Osprey roster. OFF TO THE RACES: Eddie Hernandez has stood out so far offensively for the Osprey, as he leads the league in total bases with nine. His five hits also lead the league, while Joe Robbins owns a league-best five runs batted in. Four of those on one swing in the eighth inning of Saturday’s game at Billings. WELCOME BACK, BOYS: It is the season of new for the Osprey, but the team does return five players from a year ago. Four pitchers headline the returneers: Edgar Martinez, Wilfry Cruz, Yeison Santana, and Melvin Ovalles. Brandon Leyton (SS) is the lone position player entering his second season with the O’s. MINOR LEAGUE FREE AGENTS: Missoula boasts 21 players who have been signed via free agency, whether it being the international pool, or players who went undrafted. Four of those players, Martinez (2016), Cruz (2016), Santana (2014), and Ovalles (2014) all return from last season. 16 of those players are from the international pool, while two are from Independent baseball and three are undrafted free agents from the 2018 season. SHOW ME THE POWER: Power has not been an issue for new Osprey infielder Zack Shannon, having blasted 50 career home runs in TWO seasons at Delta State. Last year, the senior notched 31 homers and 93 runs batted in, both serving as new team records. Shannon is also the first player ever from the Division II ranks to be named to the Golden Spikes Award, which is given to the best collegiate player in a single season. In his career, Shannon batted .420 with 181 RBIs while notching 26 doubles and 359 total bases. YOUNG GUNS IN THE OUTFIELD: Missoula currently has four outfielders on its roster, including three of them at the age of 19-years-old. Jesus Marriaga, David Sanchez, and Jesus Munoz are still teenagers while Luis Cossio is the veteran of the group at 21-years-old. All four players signed a free agent contract with the Diamondbacks within the last two years, and each one gets their first crack with the Osprey. 2018 DRAFT PICKS IN MISSOULA: In a draft where the Diamondbacks focused heavily on collegiate arms, several of those players will make their Minor League debut with the Osprey. Six pitchers, Erin Baldwin (Samford, 20th Rd), Jacob Stevens (Boston College 21st Rd), Andy Toelken (Missouri 19th rd), Justin Garcia (Arkansas Little Rock, 17th Rd), Bryan Menendez Muniz (UNLV, 24th Rd), and Landon Whitson (Lenoir-Rhyne 25th Rd) join Shannon (Delta State, 15th Rd). A LITTLE TROUT IN MISSOULA?: Buddy Kennedy hails from Millville, New Jersey, the same town Mike Trout grew up. Kennedy has met Trout, and become close friends with the Angels star. “I’ve always looked up to him,”Kennedy said. Ever since I met him and got to know him, he’s always been my hero. I still can’t believe that I’m good friends with him today.” Before his first season in pro ball last year, Kennedy hit .493 with six home runs and 24 RBIs in 20 games as a senior in high school. WELCOME BACK, SKIP: The Osprey are pleased to bring back manager Mike Benjamin for his second season after a successful 2017 that saw the Osprey finish 38-38 with a first-half, North Division crown. Benjamin is now in his fourth season as a coach or manager with the Diamonbacks coach after serving as the Arizona State Assistant Coach from 2010-2014. MSO Hub | 140 N.
