Program Guidelines and Information:• Interested groups shall contact the MDOT District Litter Program Coordinators for information and an application form.

• The MDOT District Litter Program Coordinator executes a written agreement with the Mississippi Transportation Commission.

• Participating groups shall abide by all regulations and safety requirements which are included in the application.

• American National Standards Institute Class Two (2) safety vests will be provided by MDOT and shall be worn at all times.

• Participants shall work only when traffic control signs are in place

• Potential dangers can include, but are not limited to: high speed traffic, potentially noxious plants, broken glass, sharp metal, hazardous materials and potentially harmful wildlife such as snakes and stinging insects.

• While on state highway right of ways, the method, manner and appearance of the participants may not in any way distract, disrupt or adversely affect traffic.

• Volunteers will save harmless the Mississippi Department of Transportation from any and all claims for damages by persons working in this program.

• No person under the age of 12 will be allowed to assist in litter removal for highway rights of way; persons between the ages of 12 and 17 may participate providing there is one adult present for every eight participants in this age category.

• MDOT prohibits the possession, consumption or being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while performing work or litter pick up on state highway rights of way.

• Litter pick up shall take place between the hours of one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset and shall not take place during inclement weather.

Who adopts? Adopt - A– Highway groups include college fraternities and sororities, civic organizations, church groups, scouts and commercial and private enterprises. Many individuals and families adopt sections of highways to show their pride in Mississippi or in memory of a family member.

What’s required? • The adopting group provides the manpower to pick up litter from both sides of a highway on a 1 or 2 mile section • Adopting groups agree to pick up a minimum of 4 times a year. • Adopting groups agree to abide by all MDOT program guidelines and safety rules.

How do I get involved?Contact the MDOT District Litter Program Coordinator in your area for applications and a list of highway sections available (see map) and to obtain additional information about the program. The address and telephone number of each District Coordinator is included in this brochure.

Roadside litter removal costs the Mississippi Department of Transportation more than three million dollars annually and the highways are still littered. We need your help!

MDOT is proud to offer the Adopt-A-Highway America Program in Mississippi. The Adopt-A-Highway Program is an innovative solution to our state’s highway littler problem. Become a member of the Adopt-A-Highway Program and join hundreds of volunteers who take part in keeping Mississippi roadways clean and attractive. Members gain the satisfaction of contributing to their community and state and generating positive recognition for the group’s service activities.

MDOT WILL:• Provide official ANSI Class Two (2) safety vests, gloves, trash bags and “Workers Ahead” signs• Remove bags collected at pre-arranged locations• Provide signs displaying the name of adopters along with and Adopt-a-Highway sign• Provide safety rules and guidelines

VOLUNTEERS WILL:• Remove litter a minimum of 4 times a year• Adopt a 1 or 2 mile section of a state highway• Dedicate 2 years to the program• Fill out an application form to be approved by MDOT District• Follow MDOT Safety Regulations and Guidelines
