5MISSISSIPPI GRIDIRON 2015

Heading into his junior season, Mississippi State offensive lineman Jamaal Clayborn is an old dog. After spending two years as a Bulldog regular at offensive guard, Clayborn is ready to show that he has learned some new tricks as the starting center for Coach John Hevesy’s personnel group.

Jamaal Clayborn played as a true freshmen two season ago. With a pair of college seasons under his belt, the Jackson, Mississippi product is ready to take on a starting role.

“It’s going well,” Clayborn said of the transition. “Every day is a work in progress. I am just trying to get out there and get better every day. I have a great coaching staff. Coach Hevesy always puts me in the right position. Dak (Prescott) is a great communica-tor and I have my fellow O lineman to help me out on different calls. It’s a group effort.”

While the fall practice sessions have been a collective experience, the individual work Clayborn put in with battery mate Dak Prescott were an important part of the off season commitment to excellence.

“We worked on it every single day,” Clayborn said. “Every day we had practice, work out groups and anything afterwards. We were on the field with the receiving corps. My O line came out there. We worked together, worked on communication.”

Earlier this year, Clayborn took the snaps before a Davis Wade Stadium crowd as the Bulldogs went through the annual spring game. That experi-ence proved to be a good one for Clayborn, but the rising junior was prepared for that moment.

“In practice, we have the music blaring to simulate the crowd,” Clayborn shared. “It wasn’t much of a difference playing in front of a crowd. I feel more confident in what I am doing. I am just trying to get better every day.”

The spring practice sessions were a continuation of the efforts Clay-born put in during the team’s bowl practices at the end of the 2014 season. Entering his first season as the Bulldogs’ trigger man, Clayborn believes he has the foundation needed to be successful.

“The biggest thing is commu-nication,” Clayborn said. “Getting everybody on the same path and get-ting everybody lined up to be more successful. You could get a sack or

a tackle for loss. Anything could go wrong if your communication is not to a ‘T’.”

While Clayborn has not bene in recent contact with departed senior snapper Dillon Day, the pair had the chance to share some time last season once the decision was made to anoint Clayborn as Day’s replacement.

“He told me that every day is a work in progress,” Clayborn said. “There are still things that I have to get better on and that I just need to go out there and give my best every day.”

In just over a week, Clayborn will be making his first snaps under the lights as the Bulldogs travel to South-ern Miss. The talented junior is eager to tee it up and get after it.

“I feel confident,” Clayborn said of his pre-game mindset. “Coach Hevesy put us in a great system to be prepared to do the task at hand. We are a hard working program, so we just work on our daily routine every day.”

Clayborn and the Bulldogs took part in a pair of game type scrim-mages to better prepare them for Saturday’s action. The veteran interior offensive lineman reports that

Former Jackson Academy star Jamaal Clayborn started at offensive guard last season but moves over to the middle of the Bulldog offensive line as the starting center.

his group did their jobs as did the rest of the team.

“I think we did a lot of things well,” Clayborn said of the offensive line. “We have a great defense, prob-ably the best in the SEC. We have great defensive lineman, Chris Jones, Ryan Brown and A.J. Jefferson are great players. They are going to make plays also, so it’s a back and forth battle. It’s SEC football. It’s going to be pros and cons.

“I think we did everything right. We ran the ball well. We passed the ball well. Our defense made stops. It was good on both ends.”

The Bulldogs will get the weekend off and then game week will be here. As the final fall camp practices have concluded, Clayborn is ready to get into the game week routine.

“I am just focused on getting back into practice and watching film,” Clayborn said. “I just want to take it a day at a time.”

The Bulldogs will resume practices on Monday to finalize their game plan for the season opener at South-ern Miss. FoxSports1 will carry the broadcast with a kickoff scheduled for just after 9 PM central time.

Ole Miss Co-Offensive Coordina-tor Dan Werner called the quarterback competition “so close,” but in the end JUCO transfer Chad Kelly will get the starting nod for the season opener against UT-Martin Saturday at 11 a.m. in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

The QB race during August camp hasn’t been an “eenie-meenie-miney-mo” situation, but according to OC/QB Coach Dan Werner, the chase for number one has been almost that close.

“We studied everything,” said Dan. “Accuracy, decision-making, drives, touchdowns, the least interceptions and protecting the ball. In the end it was very, very close, but Chad (Kelly) was a little bit ahead. It was a tough call, but we decided to let him get the first snap and see how it goes, but all three are going to play. Saturday.

“Honestly, all three (Kelly, Ryan Buchanan, Devante Kincade) have played well, like I have been saying

all camp long. It’s been a good thing, the competition they have had. I’m pleased so far. Now the next step is to see who plays best in the games. We have a plan for how we are going to split things up in the opener.”

While Kelly has the slight edge now, he still has to perform when the lights come on.

“He’s obviously excited, but he knows the pressure is still on because he’s got to go out there and play good football in the games to keep his status,” Werner continued. “The other two have the same challenge. If they want to overtake Chad, they have to perform on Saturdays.”

The other “concern,” for lack of a better word, has been the development of the offensive line because of the many OL who missed part or all of spring training.

“Everything they have shown us in summer camp is that they are playing good football. They are a cohesive unit and we’ve got a little better depth than we have had,” Dan stated. “We think we’ve moved guys around and

Chad Kelly hopes to duplicate at Ole Miss what he was able to do at East Mississippi. Kelley threw for 3,906 yards and 47 touchdowns for the National Champ Lions.

have our best five out there and we have identified guys we can put in there to give those five a breather when we are going real fast. We feel we have the ability to rotate some.”

Speaking of going fast, that is the goal this year of the Rebel offensive coaches, as has been stated since spring training.

“Our tempo stuff has been really good. We’ve had some success this fall against our defense, which I feel is as good as anyone’s,” Dan closed. “We have been preaching going fast since day one of spring camp and carried it over through August. We got away from our tempo stuff a little bit the past couple of years, but this year we are getting back to our roots.

“Obviously, we can run the offense at different speeds if we need to - if guys are winded or the defense needs a breather during one of these hot games, but it would be great to me if we got 100 plays a game. In other words, the goal is to go fast.”

When Todd Monken first took over as the head coach of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, he came in preaching a simple message: “Do it better than they do it.” He had a way of doing things and an evaluation system set up to rebuild the program that was simple and consistent.

“Recuit better, coach better, and play better,” Coach Monken was fond of saying.

Each year he has made necessary changes and has the program pointed in the right direction. Now it is just time for everything to come together.

“As I tell our team all the time this is the 2015 team,” Coach Monken said.

“This is not the 2011 team or any other team that has come through here. This is the 2015 team. It is our 3rd year as a staff and we have a full roster of 85 scholarships and so we have more depth than we have ever had. Its time to do it now and our players know that.”

Coach Monken’s evaluation first came when he evaluated the climate

of the team. The culture overall was not where he wanted so he made two big decisions to remedy that. One, he hired Zac Woodfin when UAB’s program teamporarily went away, and two, he made a change in what he focused on as a coach.

“We made a change in the strength and conditioning department where we changed out who we had leading us,” Monken said.

“That has had a huge impact on our team in terms of doing it better. There is more than just lifting. There is nutirition, core strength, recovery, and cutting edge ways of how you create the best football player and athlete you can.”

Monken knows the past three years have not been where this program ever expected to be.

“I didn’t get to where I am at by taking things personally to see where I can make a difference,” he said.

“Sometimes that personality gets in your way of being as positive as you can for your players. You have to reach everyone. You can’t just reach this group. We all needed to do it better and our past has been unac-ceptable. In any programs’ terms it has been unacceptable. Especially

Southern Miss will feature a much more talented roster that should turn around the Golden Eagle program in 2015.

SIMPLE APPROACH PAYING OFFhere though, at a special place like this.”

Sure enough, as something would go right for the Eagles, they’d turn around and see something else go wrong to kill that momentum they had just gained.

“One of the things that we have done a poor job of is holding op-ponents under a certain amount of explosive plays,” he said.

“We haven’t created enough disruption to warrant that many big plays. It is a lack of discipline and fitting things right and we are going to do a better job of doing it. If we don’t, we won’t be the team we think we can be. It is really that simple. The yardage is fools gold, and we are focusing on those five areas and we believe we’ll be a much better team.”

Of course, that also comes with having better players, something Monken and staff have addressed this

past off-season.“We have a lot more depth on the

lines and that’s the biggest change,” he said.

“We have so much more on the offensive line, everyone is back but Fred. Defensive line wise we have 16 scholarship guys in the D-line and that makes such a difference. Last year we had some good players up front but we weren’t able to rotate. Our younger guys have really devel-oped and we’ve added a lot of guys to that.

“That’s where the game is won, up front, and we feel like we’ve been able to address that.”

Southern Miss gets a chance to show their improved team off to the home crowd as they prepare next week to take on Mississippi State, September 5th, in the home opener at “The Rock.”

Freeze kicks off his fourth season with the Rebels, who are 89-26-5 (.763 winning percentage) in season openers and have taken 16 of the last 19. This is the first meeting between Ole Miss and UT Martin.

At No. 15 in the Amway Coaches poll, Ole Miss has its highest pre-season ranking since it was 8th in 2009. Ole Miss’ current streak of 18 straight weeks in the national polls is the longest since 69 straight from 1957-62.

The Rebels return seven starters from last year’s defense that led the nation allowing just 16.0 points per game, including preseason All-Amer-icans Tony Conner (DB) and Robert Nkemdiche (DT).

The Ole Miss offense will have a new face under center this year, but nine starters return including pre-season All-Americans Evan Engram (TE), Laquon Treadwell (WR) and Laremy Tunsil (OT).

Ole Miss has sold out of season tickets for the third straight year with a school-record 52,375 sold.

UT-Martin: The Skyhawks are 1-18 all-time against FBS squads, with their lone win coming over Memphis (20-17) on Sept. 1, 2012. All-time, UT Martin is 0-5 against opponents from the SEC, with all five games being played during head coach Jason Simpson’s tenure. The Skyhawks played Auburn in 2008, Tennessee in 2010, Mississippi State in 2011 and 2014 while also lining up against Kentucky in the 2014 season opener.

Dak Prescott, a Heisman Trophy candidate, owns a 14-6 record as a starter and he has shattered 17 school records. For his career, the senior has scored 34 TDs (31 rush, 3 receiving) and been responsible for a school-re-cord 72 TDs (41 passing, 31 rushing). Dak is one passing TD away from ty-ing the MSU career record of 42 held by former teammate Tyler Russell.

MSU returns 45 letterwinners (22 offense, 20 defense, 3 specialists) and features three players on watch lists who did not start a game last year - RB Ashton Shumpert, CB Will Redmond and DL Chris Jones. The Bulldogs return a combined 160 career starts (82 on offense, 78 on defense).

The Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the SEC by the media. Three straight years and four out of six times under Dan Mullen, MSU has finished higher than the projec-tion.

USM: The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series with MSU 14-13-1. The program looks to snap a three-season losing season streak after previously compiling a school-best 18 consecutive winning seasons and appearing in 14 bowl games in 15 years.

After finishing the 2012 campaign winless, the Golden Eagles have improved on their victory total in each season under Todd Monken, capturing one win in 2013 and three in 2014.

South Panola’s Pogue Back On The Field

Don’t call it a miracle, but it is dang sure close to it for South Pa-nola’s Tyler Pogue.

“We didn’t want anybody to know,” said South Panola coach and Tyler’s da Lance Pogue. “It was a se-cret and we wanted to surprise people here tonight.”

At exactly four months after tear-ing his ACL in his right knee during spring practice South Panola quar-terback Tyler Pogue made his season debut on Friday night in the Tigers 21-14 victory over Meridian.

“The doctors felt real good about where he’s at and last night (Thurs-day night) they cleared him to play,” Lance Pogue said. “Plan was to get his feet wet and he definitely got that tonight with him getting sacked twice so we know he can stand a hit on that knee.”

In limited action Tyler Pogue went 0-for-4 passing and was sacked two times.

“It has been a while and felt good to play,” Tyler said. “I was originally suppose to start, but that all deter-mined on field position. I am really not suppose to run around. I was told just to stay in the pocket and be like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning and just sit back there and throw it. I didn’t trust my knee so I wasn’t confident in running.”

The Tigers (2-0) are off this week before hitting the road for a Thursday night game at Madison Central on Sept. 10.

Causey’s First Game A Doozie

Newly Oak Grove coach Drew Causey won’t forget his first game as a head coach for the rest of his life.

Down 33-21 to Wayne County with just over two minutes left in the game the Warriors got a 6-yard touchdown pass from Alex Ward to Charles Hartfield to cut the lead to 33-27. After a successful attempt on a onside kick, Oak Grove marched 49 yards in 54 seconds that capped off by a 12-yard touchdown pass from Ward to Justin Mary with seven sec-onds left to win it for the Warriors.

“I had full confidence in the team that when we got down by two scores they would fight and give it all they had and they did,” Causey said. “We got a very close football team. They are behind each other. We made big plays when they had too for us to win.”

Causey was congratulated by former Oak Grove coach Nevil Barr after the game.

Warriors (1-0) will host defending 5A state champion Laurel (1-1) on Friday.

Hattiesburg Comeback For The Ages

Hattiesburg might have just pulled off one of the biggest comebacks in Mississippi high school football.

The Tigers were down 32-6 to arch rival Laurel with 3:57 left in the game. In a 3 minute and 19 seconds span, Hattiesburg scored four touch-downs to stun the Tornadoes 34-32 in the 92nd annual Battle for the Little Brown Jug.

It was the second straight win for Hattiesburg in the series.

Tiger quarterback Julius Conner threw for 297 yards and five touch-downs. Wide receiver Jordan Murphy had 10 catches for 237 yards with four touchdowns to lead Hattiesburg.

“That was big for our kids”, said Head Coach Tony Vance. “They wouldn’t quit. They wouldn’t quit. We have talent but heart won that game. I couldn’t be more proud.”

In the final minutes Hattiesburg used a stop on defense, a recovered onside kick, and maybe an even more improbable turnover on Laurel’s next to last possession to pull out the win.

BIG 10 (6A-4A)Starkville shoots back up the rankings with a win over Ox-ford. Hattiesburg makes their inaugural BIG 10 appearance.

Davis’ latest injury was his third in his last three seasons. He injured his right knee as a freshman starting quarterback at Lawrence County.

TOP 10 GAMES OF THE WEEKMadison Central against Oxford is the only matchup of Big 10 teams this week.

1. Madison Central (2-0) at Oxford (1-1)

Jaguars have come out fir-ing in the first two games with convincing wins over Meridian and Brandon. Madison got a big surge from its defense and run-ning back Jaylon Uzodinma last week with 145 yards rushing with a touchdown. Oxford is look-ing to rebound from their loss to Starkville. DK Metcalf and company hard to beat at home.Pick: Oxford 21-17

2. Starkville (1-1) at West Point (1-0)

The Yellowjackets and Green Wave are coming off convinc-ing wins. Starkville upset highly ranked Oxford 20-7 on national

HIGH SCHOOL

TV and got a big time perfor-mance from wide receiver A.J. Brown. West Point shocked a lot of people going on the road to Louisville and rolling the Wild-cats 46-7 and got a stellar per-formance by sophomore tailback Marcus Murphy who had three rushing touchdowns. Starkville is two explosive.Pick: Starkville 34-24

3. Laurel (1-1) at Oak Grove (1-0)

Tornadoes and Warriors are coming epic games last week. Laurel blew a 32-6 lead to Hat-tiesburg, while Oak Grove came from behind in the final two minutes to beat Wayne County. Laurel looks to rebound and have a big performance from Keon Howard. Oak Grove will play two quarterbacks in Alex Ward and Reed Simon, both will be finding Jordan Duncan quite often. Laurel

holds on this time on the road.Pick: Laurel 34-30

4. Hattiesburg (2-0) at Col-lins (2-0)

Two high power offenses meet in this all-Tiger matchup. Hatties-burg is coming probably the most epic comeback Mississippi high school football as ever seen. The Tigers were down 32-6 with just under four minutes and scored four touchdowns in a three min-ute and 19 second span to beat arch rival Laurel. Collins has one convincing surprising win over West Jones, but this will be the first tough test of season Hatties-burg makes it three in a row.Pick: Hattiesburg 30-25

5. Grenada (2-0) at Lafayette (2-0)

Chargers and Commodores are off to hot starts this season and expect a whole bunch of rushing attempts. Grenada has developed a two-headed monster at running back that is averaging 325.5 yards per game rushing in Deon House (304 yards rushing, 4 touch-downs) and Davarius Bridges

(213 yards, 2 TD’s). Lafayette has its work horse at running back as well in Tyrell Price. Chargers remain on a roll.Pick: Grenada 17-14

6. Cathedral (2-0) at Jackson Prep (2-0)

Cathedral has won it’s first two games by a combined score 66-6. The Green Wave will get its first true test of the season when they come up the Natchez Trace to face the Patriots in Flowood. Green Wave is led by do-it-all athlete Dee Fleming, while Prep has been leaning on the running of Jacob Crawley and Jerrian Ealy. Prep always finds a way to win big games especially at home.Pick: Jackson Prep 28-21

7. Tylertown (2-0) at Mc-Comb (2-0)

Two high powered offenses go head-to-head in McComb. One is throwing, the other rushing. The Chiefs is averaging 235 yards rushing after the first two games and is led by Ojavious Magee who has six touchdowns on the

ground. Venchenza McCary is off to hot start at quarterback for Mc-Comb and helped lead the Tigers to a come from behind win at Harrison Central last week. Tigers at home.Pick: McComb 20-16

8. Brandon (1-1) at Clinton (1-1)

Brandon looks to rebound after its first loss to Madison Central, while Clinton is starting to click on offense (which could get deadly). Cam Akers threw for four touchdowns in the first half for the Arrows in last weeks win over Ridgeland and got a big performance by running back Darius Maberry. Bulldogs are led by Brady Anderson who looks to bounce back after throwing for just 78 yards last week. Arrows in a close one at home.Pick: Clinton 24-21

9. Northwest Rankin (2-0) at Pearl (1-1)

The Toby Collums era has started off very well at Northwest Rankin. The Cougars thumped Germantown in the opener and got a big road win at Brookhaven last week. Braden Smith has been the leader on offense. Pearl is coming off a shootout loss to Warren Central last week and is looking to rebound behind Le-darius Carpenter. Pirates at home.Pick: Pearl 21-17

10. Callaway (2-0) at Provine (2-0)

Who is going to be the King of Jackson Public Schools? Well this one will for sure determine that. Provine is led by running back Demarque Brown, while Callaway as some playmakers on the perimeter led by promising sophomore wide receiver Malik Heath. Chargers gets revenge from that 8-7 overtime loss to Rams last year.Pick: Callaway 22-16

Page 13: Mississippi Gridiron Weekly, Edition 2
