T HA NKS to the co mplexi ty of today's architecture,which includes in its broad horizon everythingfrom furniture des ign to urban pl an ning, no arc hiteet wo rks alone! Ev ery architect knows that hisarchi tecture ca nnot be tully realized withou t thecollabo ration of many other prac ti tioners of theallied arts and s c i e n c e s i n c l u d i n engineers, craftsmen, sculptors, muralists and landscape architects.Architectural design sta rts with a need, a pro gramto sa tisfy that need and a si te on which to build aso lu tion. After that , plann ing begins with an overallconcept, proceeds from the creat ion of controlledand orderl y indoor space and the structure andmaterials with whic ll to enclose that space to theorga ni zation and equipment of the outdoor spacetllat surrounds the bui ldin g and separates it from itsneighbors. This outdoor space, whether it be theenvironmen t or a single build ing or an enti re communit y, must be just as controlled and orderl y, justas well equipped and visually satisfying, as spacewi thin the building itself.

The organization and equipment of public orprivate, urban or suburban outdoor space is a designproblem that can be sohed best by architects andlandscape architects working together. They arenatural tellmmates in this fi eld. Th is has been proved,time and again, through history.Street furniture is not outdoor furni ture alone. It

It is therefore well worthwhile to take a good look at thisenvironment and its street furniture.Let 's start with the public st ree t. (l ) Our downtow n slree ts are usua JJ y crowded corridors wheremotor and foot traffic are hopeless ly intermingledand where uncoord inated planning of buildings andstreet furnit ure complete the visua l co nfusion. Inthis typical urban jun gle, a subway kiosk, a newsstand, municipal lampposts, traffic signs an d trafficlights and pr iva tely sponso red store signs and adverti si ng billboa rd s all fi ght each other for attenlion. The buildings, originally conceived by theirarchitects as serene example of dignified design, arelost in this honkyton k environment.(2) Even in our public parks, with motor trafficexcluded and some provision made for pedestriancomfort alld relaxat ion, the confusion of the streetscape can break through. Somelimes, with morecontrol. results can be more sa tisfying: (3) hereis General Sherman, marching south past the treesof Central Park towards his una tta inable objective(4 ) - the lovely lady on top of the plaza fountain;(5) here is McKim, Mead & White's ci rcular stonebench in Herald Square mo(leled on the circular ,shielded benches that provi(ied peace an d (Iuiet forphilosophers in the market place at Athens.It is where the crowded corridor street expandsinto such quiet alcoves that the hope for restfulorderliness and beauty can be realized (6) . InPittsburgh, for example, there is a pedestra in plazaset on top of an underground garage, (7) plantedwith trees, shr ubs and nowers, (8) adorned withfountains an d crowded with appreciative people.Wh en private bui ld ing projects yield some ofthcir ground area to the public, the results can beequally aUractive and just as popular (9 ) . A greatdepartment store in Denver left spaee for a wintertime skating rink and summertime cafe and (lO )equ ipped it with well designed lampposts, benchesand plan ting; (11) an office building in that samecity provides pools, fountains and a plaza for pub licuse and thereby also creates the right sett ing fora skyscraper.

Private outdoor spaces are usually be tter designedand equipped than public parks and streets. Theintelligent private developer has an advantage overthe numerous municipal agencies whose overlappingau thority se ts the public urban paltern , a pa tterllthat is often just pictu resq ue confusion.Good street iurniture can endow its surroundingswi th meaningful character jus t as bad stree t furniture, inappropriately (lesigned and out of key withits enyironment, can mar the best of our bu ildings,

streets and ci ties. It would seem that the best solutionwould be to design both street furni tu re and itsse tting in proper relationship to the people who willsee, enjoy and use it. Here is the oppo rtun ity an dthe cha llenge!
