Confession and Forgiveness

P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, Love from the beginning, Word made

flesh, Breath of heaven.

C: Amen.

P: Let us confess our sinfulness before God and one another, trusting in God’s

endless mercy and love.

— Silence is kept for reflection —

Merciful God,

C: we confess that we are not perfect. We have said and done things we

regret. We have tried to earn your redeeming grace, while denying it to

others. We have resisted your call to be your voice in the world. Forgive

us, loving God. Give us your righteousness, the strength to put aside our

failures, and the courage to try again. Amen. P: Dear people of God, hear the good news: Christ the Savior is born! You are

loved and forgiven in the name of Jesus, who has come among us. You are

freed from proving that you deserve to be loved, because God’s love is given

to you as the most precious gift of all. Rejoice in this love and share it with

the world.

C: Amen.

Opening Song: “Angels From the Realms of Glory”

Greeting:

P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of

the Holy Spirit be with you all.

C: And also with you.

Kyrie: “Mercy, O Mercy”

in our own powers. As you protected the infant Jesus, so defend us and all

the needy from harm and adversity, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and

Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and

forever. Amen.

Welcome Guests . . . We’re glad you’re here!

We hope you hear the good news of Jesus Christ as you worship with us.

There are guest bags in the narthex; please take one as you leave. Members and Guests, A Connection Card is provided at our services for members to update contact infor-

mation or make requests. Also, if you are a guest and would like to learn more about our church, please fill out the card. The card also provides options for more church information, ministries, comments, and prayers. Please return the card to the box provided on the usher’s table (at the back of the worship area).

COMMUNION: All who are baptized and believe in Christ’s presence in this meal are welcome to the Lord’s table. Grape juice and gluten free wafers are available upon request.

A font with water at the entrance of the nave is a baptismal reminder of who and whose we are. If you would like, as you enter or leave, dip a finger into the water and mark yourself with the sign of the cross as a way to prepare yourself for worship and service within your baptismal covenant.

LARGE PRINT & Children’s BULLETINS — Available from an usher.

HEARING DEVICES — Four assistive listening devices are available for use during the services. They are located on the bulletin table at the

sanctuary main entrance.

Mission of the Month envelopes are under your pew by the hymnals.

Devotional books are on the table in the narthex.

For those members who are participating in the Simply Giving Program or have set up a private automatic payment with their bank, yellow

bookmarks are on the usher’s table at the back of the sanctuary. To be a part of our offering and dedication, pick one up as you enter each Sunday to place in the offering plate.

Children's bags are available in the sanctuary.

An unstaffed nursery/cry room is in the northwest corner of the narthex. Trinity’s Church service may be seen Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Cable Channels 3 or 300, OR at www.tlcyankton.com anytime! Contribution Envelopes

Contribution envelopes for the entire year of 2020

can be found in the west hallway across from the

coat room in alphabetical order. Thank you for

saving Trinity the cost of postage by not mailing

them to you.

Would you have time to help us? Trinity is in need of volunteers to help with ushering and

greeting at our services, as well as people to help video the services.

As greeters, just a smile and a handshake can be so inviting to

people attending our services.

Our ushers add a valuable service in also welcoming people,

and helping with offerings and communion.

The video recorders are necessary to record services so that

those unable to attend may be able to view the services on TV or on

our website. We, of course, would provide training for both the ushers

and video recorders.

If you could find the time to help us, it would be such a

blessing to our church and, we believe, rewarding for you as well.

Please call the church office if you would like to volunteer. Thank you

for your prayerful consideration.

December Mission of the Month:

“Food for Thought” Yankton “Food For Thought “ provides food and nutritional education to school age children and their families. Two programs are

utilized to support this mission. There are over 380 sacks that are packed weekly and distributed to all of the grade schools, middle school, Sacred Heart school, and Headstart. The packs are handed out on Fridays and are meant to help food insecurities over the weekends. The packs are nutritionally balanced items that are easy to prepare, shelf stable, and kid friendly. In addition to the weekly packs, the school food pantry is open on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evening each month. We are currently serving over 125 families through the school food pantry. Your donations feed the hungry kids right here in Yank-ton. Thank you for your consideration and for your contributions. Carla Hummel, Yankton Food For Thought President Deb Overseth, Coordinator

“Eternal Confidence” On Saturday, January 4th following the 5:30 PM service, we

have a special guest, Dempsey Tapley, coming to share a video with

us dealing with why people he has interviewed have left the church.

This does not pertain to our church in particular, but people who have

left the church all together.

Dempsey Tapley is a 23 year old filmmaker and educator.

Having received his B.A. in Education from the University of Sioux

Falls in 2018, and with 4 years filmmaking experience, in 2019

Dempsey created ‘Eternal Confidence’ -- an interview series centering

around issues of faith and belief faced by active Christians and

ex-Christians. This empathetic, genuine interview series is available

for free on YouTube.

The format of the presentation on January 4th will be to show

a few minutes of video followed by a question and answer session. We

look forward to your participation.

“To be grateful is to find blessings in everything.” Entering into our retirement, Bev and I want

everyone to know that we are truly thankful and feel blessed for the time we spent at Trinity and the many, many memories we will take with us. My retirement celebration was awesome and I thank everyone involved in planning, facilitating, and attending the event. Thank you, also, for all of the retirement well wishes, cards, gifts, and prayers as well as the Christmas cards and gifts. God’s Blessings to all and remember to Worship, Serve, and Proclaim! First Sunday of Christmas

As we celebrate the Twelve Days of Christmas, our gospel today confronts us with the death of innocent children at the hands of Herod. The birth of Christ does not remove the power of evil from our world, but its light gives us hope as we walk with all the “holy innocents” of past generations and today who have suffered unjustly. In our gathering around word and meal, God continues to redeem us, lift us up, and carry us as in days of old.

14 First Reading: Isaiah 63: 7-9

7 I will recount the gracious deeds of the Lord,

the praiseworthy acts of the Lord,

because of all that the Lord has done for us,

and the great favor to the house of Israel

that he has shown them according to his mercy,

according to the abundance of his steadfast love. 8 For he said, ‘Surely they are my people,

children who will not deal falsely’;

and he became their savior 9 in all their distress.

It was no messenger or angel

but his presence that saved them;

in his love and in his pity he redeemed them;

he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Second Reading: Hebrews 2: 10-18

10It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things

exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of

their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11For the one who sanctifies

and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason

Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, 12saying,

‘I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters,

in the midst of the congregation I will praise you.’

13And again,

‘I will put my trust in him.’

And again,

‘Here am I and the children whom God has given me.’

14Since, therefore, the children share flesh and blood, he himself

likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy

the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15and free those

who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. 16For it is

clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of

Abraham. 17Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in

every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in

the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the

people. 18Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able

to help those who are being tested.

Page 15: Mission statement of Trinity Lutheran Church · Special music during offering: “Christmas Alleluia” Offertory Hymn : “Everybody’s Got Something to Offer” Offertory Prayer

15 Gospel: Matthew 2: 13-23

13Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to

Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother, and

flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to

search for the child, to destroy him.’ 14Then Joseph got up, took the

child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt, 15and remained there

until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the

Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’

16When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he

was infuriated, and he sent and killed all the children in and around

Bethlehem who were two years old or under, according to the time that

he had learned from the wise men. 17Then was fulfilled what had been

spoken through the prophet Jeremiah:

18 ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,

wailing and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be consoled, because they are no more.’

19When Herod died, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared in a

dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, 20‘Get up, take the child and his

mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the

child’s life are dead.’ 21Then Joseph got up, took the child and his

mother, and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that

Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was

afraid to go there. And after being warned in a dream, he went away to

the district of Galilee. 23There he made his home in a town called

Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be

fulfilled, ‘He will be called a Nazorean.’
