November 2016 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. I walked into the store the other day hoping to find some Halloween Candy. I found it, but I also found the ugly Christmas Sweaters, the reindeer, and probably by the time this newsletter is in your hand the first Christmas Trees
will be out. At first I was frustrated and angry. I actually MAY have made a snarky comment to one of my friends I bumped into. Then, as I sat down that evening and opened my computer to do some work I realized that I was already working on the theme for LENT. I shook my head and sighed, hearing a word from Matthew's Gospel echo in my head, "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” The truth is for me, there are few times during the day that I am “in the moment” - I am thinking about Sunday's sermon, or writing a funeral sermon while driving home from a hospital visit in Toledo, or putting a wedding homily together in my mind while out mowing the lawn. I seem to always be thinking about what's for dinner, what's tomorrow look like, what's next weeks schedule look like, what are we going to preach for Easter Sunday. While all of those may be very good thoughts, while it is nice to take some time while mowing or driving to work on a sermon – it causes me to miss so much of what's going on around me. I was trained by the best, my step dad, about Situational Awareness. Being aware of who and what is around you. How to identify potential threats and friends. To know where everyone in a room is. The Fire Service taught me at all times to know exactly what the routes of egress are. I STILL count the numbers of doors between my room and the exit stairs in a hotel so I can find them even if I can’t see. But sometimes, I get lazy – wait, no, that's not true – I get busy. I wonder how many of us do that in our Spiritual lives, too? We get stuck, we get distracted, we get disoriented, we lose our way. We look this way or that and before we know it night has come and we are exhausted, our planned time to pray, to sit, to just be in the presence of God slips away like the wisps of morning fog. Would you join me in being attentive? Be attentive as we enter the Festive Seasons for friends struggling, be attentive to prayer and spending time with God, be attentive to worship, be attentive to those in need, be attentive to one another, be attentive to the NOW – the moment with family, with friends, or with the quiet of home. Be Still and Know that I am God Be Still and Know Be Still BE In Christ PD+

Prayer list information Next time you’re about to submit a request for inclusion on the prayer list please ask the following questions. Did that person give permission to the office? Does that person wish the information to be shared publicly? If the answer to either question is “NO” your prayer request violates the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).
If we do not have personal permission for inclusion we will only publish first names. These are the guidelines from the ELCA provided at last Fall’s Synod Conference meetings.

Members of the military in active service and their families. We are honored and pleased to pray for those in need. We do ask that persons asking for non members to be listed will keep us updated monthly.
Also, please be aware that the pastor and church office are not automatically notified of your admission to a hospital, due to the HIPPA laws. If your stay is a planned one please contact the church office or have a relative contact us.
In some cases, even if you tell the hospital it is all right to con-tact us, it may not occur. You personally contacting the church office should be the primary way the message of your hospitali-zation reaches the pastor. Thanks for your help in this matter.
Please continue to raise our nation, its leaders, and our personnel "in harm's way" in your prayers. Let us not forget to pray for them and to thank God for His blessings. We, as Christians, should also witness God's love by praying for our enemies in all this. Keep in mind Christ died and was raised from the dead for them also and we were called in our Baptism to wit-ness to all the world. We particularly commend the following who are members of our congregation:
Major Tamara Funari, Daughter of Ron and Connie Allgire Sgt. Kerry Schnitz, Son of Larry and Cheryl Burroughs We also remember in prayer those relatives of members. St. Sgt. THRIVENT NOVEMBER 2016
When our weather starts getting colder and the day-light time shorter, I like to curl up with a warm blanket and a book to fill my time. My oldest son, Brian, has been involved this year in running many half marathons to control his weight and meet a challenge he set for himself. As a runner, his shoes are an important part of the way to reach his goal.
Recently I was reading an article by Jim Fannin titled “What is your Pebble?” from his book The Pebble in the Shoe. A pebble in the shoe of a runner can be a nagging issue or could mean a big problem, perhaps even an injury, if not removed. Mr. Fannin says we all have ‘pebbles’ in our lives. Even though they may arrive at different times and for different reasons, we must pay attention to them to make life more productive and enjoyable. Some of the pebbles he describes are doubt, unresolved issues, guilt, rejec-tion, bad habits, and fear. These intangible unseen pebbles can be very destructive. We need to learn how to remove them and prevent them from making a negative impact on our lives. This is not an easy thing but approaching it a step at a time is a good start. What a busy time of year. We are getting ready for the upcoming holiday season. We have several Thrivent Action Teams at work on activities happening at St. Paul. Our recent host-ing of our new Bishop Daniel Beaudoin was a success. A large crowd enjoyed our deli-cious German style Sauerkraut and Brats dinner with a variety of pies from the Dough Box in Archbold for dessert. Thank you to Julie Sasseen and the Kitchen and Dining Room teams that made this happen. Good job. We also have an upcoming Shop-A-Thon event on December
3rd. This event has been a big success the last couple of years. If you have some holiday shopping items you still want to pick
up, stop by and take a look at the many booths that will be set up at St. Paul.
Our St. Paul Youth are doing several fundraisers to earn funds for their trip to the National Gathering. The first one will be coming soon and then another one in late December/January. Thank you to Stacy Barker and Dyle Roth for forming an Action Team to help with these projects. Let’s join them to meet their goals. Thank you for your continued support of all our events.
