DEAR PARISHIONERS,

T he term “Symbiosis” is typically reserved to describe relationships within the animal or amoeba kingdom. Symbiosis is defined as the interaction between two different organisms living in the same environment. If it is further defined as

“Mutual Symbiosis” it means that they are not only two different creatures living in the same environment but that this “living arrangement” is also advantageous for both. They benefit from each other (mutualism) rather than just one tagging along (commensalism) or one dragging the other down by being a threat (parasitism) to the other party.

Consider the following as examples of mutual symbiosis in the animal kingdom: the cleaner fish and the shark are in very, very close proximity and share the same environment as the cleaner fish enters into the open mouth of the shark and cleans its teeth. It does so without any threat of becoming shark bait. Or consider the Egyptian plover (a.k.a. the Crocodile bird) that stands inside the open mouth of the crocodile to eat the rotting meat from its teeth. It doesn’t have any concern of becoming the entrée of the day. Both little fish and brave bird enjoy a free meal while shark and crocodile get some free dental work. Isn’t that amazing?

I’d like to use that notion of mutual symbiosis as I continue to inform you all about our need to address the issues of our school building here at Resurrection. Too many people don’t realize the fact that it is the parish’s responsibility (part of Jesus’ mandate and the church’s mission) to educate the faithful. Furthermore, we are called to assist Catholic parents in their role as primary educators of the faith to their children. While it is the parents’ choice to send their children to the Catholic School system or the Religious Education Programs, it is imperative that the parish provide a suitable, safe place that will lend itself to the success of both.

The Holy Family School system and the Religious Education program are, indeed, different animals. One is bigger than the other but both need an environment in which children are given the space to be schooled, and where adults should be engaged in faith-based education of themselves and their children. Each one benefits, as both must share in the same space. We do have Catholic school students there during the day and we have religious education students there after regular school hours. We also have a combination of students, parochial and public, during the summer session of Bible Camp and other faith-based events. We also have adults, parents, and teachers/catechists from both sets of children, who need to utilize the same space for the purpose of faith formation and to foster a greater sense of community throughout the year.

In this mutual symbiosis, this living arrangement, which educates all of our children and provides for the spiritual welfare of the bodies, hearts, and minds of all disciples, regardless of age, it shouldn’t matter whether parish families attend the Holy Family system or Dubuque Community Schools. There should be no distinctions of which one is the stronger or weaker. There should be no disparity between which one is better or worse. There should be no division between those who go to parochial or public schools. We are all God’s children and we need a safe place for Catholic faith formation.

As adults, it should be our top priority to see to it that our children have the best resources, and the safest places to learn about Jesus. And, as the primary educators of the faith for our children, we adults should also have a deep desire to have a place for our own continuing formation and faith development through adult education classes and spiritual formation events such as retreats or other applicable presentations.

The issue at hand is that our current faith formation facility (a.k.a. our school) is in need of some significant physical attention (infrastructure, HVAC, and growth expansion) in order for us to continue to offer effective faith-based education to all ages for years to come. The current facility was constructed in 1963 and was built to last 20 years. After 58 years it has served us well beyond its time, and has, for some time, been showing signs of disrepair.

A consulting firm (Mark Davy and Associates) has been hired to do a feasibility study regarding the scope of the project, and to seek parishioner input. In the near future you may be contacted by them to take part in a survey to gauge your knowledge of the present needs and interest in the project. Please be advised of this and continue to pray as we continue to walk this path and explore the possibilities before us.

Please email or call Ellen if you are interested in making this very worthwhile trip [email protected] or 556-7511.

ATTENTION! FRAUDULENT EMAILS

The archdiocese has received reports of fraudulent emails that appear to be coming from pastors. These emails are part of an international scheme that has emerged over the past few years. Scammers are trying to trick parish-ioners into believing that their pastor is requesting money or gift cards for various parish needs through a series of email messages.

Again, these are fraudulent emails. Official archdiocesan priest email addresses end in @dbqarch.org. These emails come from different addresses, often disguised to look like personal Gmail or Yahoo accounts. The body of these messages are generic and include phrases like "Are you in the office now?" and "How are you? Please contact me."

Neither Fr. Phil nor Fr. Andy, nor any of the staff would ask for money or gift cards by email, so please ignore such an email if you receive one.

RED ENVELOPE APPEAL Resurrection youth are asking for your support through their Red Envelope appeal for the mission trips they are taking this year as well as NCYC in November. In July, a group of middle school students and adults will travel to Davenport with Just5Days to serve people in need. The same week, a team of high school students and adults will travel to Chicago to serve people in need. Both of these team experience provide participants with the opportunity to learn, serve, and grow together in their faith. In November, a group of high school students will be attending the National Catholic Youth Conference in an awesome opportunity to grow in their faith.

We are asking you to join us and “go by giving.” First, you can GO by GIVING up a few minutes each day to pray for the youth of our parish as we encounter Christ through service and community. Second, you can GO by GIVING a financial contribution to help make these trips possible. There are prayer sheets for you to take and red envelopes for your donations available on tables in the Gathering Space and at the parish office. Thank you for all the support you give the youth at Resurrection!

MUSIC & LITURGY “TRANSFIGURATION” This song begins: “Jesus on the mountain peak, stands alone in glory blazing. Let us, if we dare to speak, join the saints and angels praising.”

We come to Mass each weekend to join our voices in prayer and praising for the many blessing of God, as we share in Word and Sacrament. We find nourishment not only in Word and Sacrament, but in becoming Jesus’ body and sharing God’s love in the world outside the church doors. We can be transfigured and turned into something more beautiful through worship, but only if we truly are part of the celebration, and not merely spectators. We only get out of Mass what we put into it. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting ourselves there. Once we have arrived, the next step comes right out of the lyrics we sing today: “Let us, if we dare to speak.” Join in the prayer, join in the song! Let the Spirit fill your hearts and minds. Be transfigured!

Praying, Sharing and Giving

STEWARDSHIP

In this weekend’s Gospel, Peter, James, and John wanted to build a tent for Jesus and just stay on the

mountain where His transfiguration took place. But the Son of God, the Chosen One, knew that He must instead keep moving toward His crucifixion.

We, too, must rise from worship and do what we can to hasten the coming of the kingdom.

Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. Teach me to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward, save that of knowing that I do Your will.
