MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of Gloria de Cristo Lutheran Church is to proclaim and reflect Gods love as revealed through Jesus Christ. As a community of the concerned, guided by the Holy Spirit, we will strengthen one another through Word and Sacrament, witness, learning and service. We will share our giſts and talents to reach out and provide hope to all people. THE EVANGEL Gloria de Cristo Lutheran Church 11273 E. 40th Street Yuma, Az. 85367 February 2020 Volume 28, Issue 2 TO ALL OF GODS CHILDREN, CALLED TO VALUE OTHERS! THE WAY OF COMPANIONSHIP: DISCOVERING THE HEART OF MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY Companionship? Whats that? Most faith communities remain somewhat oblivious to the needs of people experi- encing mental illness. Companionship suggests a more profound response to mental illness and it com- pels us to become the people our faith traditions have long called us to become. Through the side-by-side presence and orientation and through participation in the other four core practices of companionship: listening, providing hospitality, neighboring, and expanding circles of care—we become more acutely aware of a common humanity, of our experience of frailty and suffering, but also of the eter- nal experience of the human heart. Through companionship we often witness courage in the face of suffering and deep disappointment. We find ourselves inspired by the indomitable human spirit and by the grace that seems to become abundantly clear as we walk together the road to recovery. We discover that mutuality is more powerful than a one-up, one—down helping relationship, and that people who have experienced mental illness have gifts and unique insights from which we would benefit if we could only learn to see and em- brace them.

TO ALL OF GOD’S CHILDREN, CALLED TO VALUE OTHERS! THE WAY OF COMPANIONSHIP: DISCOVERING THE HEART OF MENTAL HEALTH MINISTRY Companionship? What’s that? Most faith communities remain somewhat oblivious to the needs of people experi-encing mental illness. Companionship suggests a more profound response to mental illness and it com-pels us to become the people our faith traditions have long called us to become. Through the side-by-side presence and orientation and through participation in the other four core practices of companionship: listening, providing hospitality, “neighboring,” and expanding circles of care—we become more acutely aware of a common humanity, of our experience of frailty and suffering, but also of the eter-nal experience of the human heart. Through companionship we often witness courage in the face of suffering and deep disappointment. We find ourselves inspired by the indomitable human spirit and by the grace that seems to become abundantly clear as we walk together the road to recovery. We discover that mutuality is more powerful than a one-up, one—down helping relationship, and that people who have experienced mental illness have gifts and unique insights from which we would benefit if we could only learn to see and em-brace them.

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS

THE FUNCTION OF BIBLICAL FAITH IS TO TRUST GOD IN HIS LOVE TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO GIVE US WHAT IS GOOD FOR US. THIS IS GRACE IN ACTION!

SHORT CLASSES ON COMPANIONSHIP Thursday, February 20th from Noon until 4 pm (Earl Marlatt & Pastor Timm, instructors) Cost: $20 for materials. Tuesday, March 17th from 8 am until Noon (Robin Marlatt & Jeannie Volpe, instructors) Cost: $20 for materials. A small investment of time may help you help others! See you in worship!! Bill Timm, pastor

By the time you read this, you will have attended the Annual Meeting of Gloria de Cristo Lutheran on Sunday, January 26.

You will have greeted the newly elected council Ministry Team Leaders. Hopefully you will have felt the Holy Spirit moving you to join one of these Ministry Teams and ask about the date of the next meeting. Serving on a committee at Gloria de Cristo will give you input and insight to the mission of Gloria de Cristo.

You will have heard the wonderful news that we have received donations and matching gifts, totaling more than half the amount needed to replace the funds used to purchase the new organ. Hallelujah! Praise God for the Glorious music and thank Him with our gifts.

Our Mental Health Ministry trainers will have trained another class on MH First Aid and will soon be certified to train the MH First Aid for Older Adults. Compan-ionship training classes are also being scheduled.

On March 15, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Gloria de Cristo. Watch for more info and plan to attend.

2020 is a new year – a new decade – a new, but continuing challenge, to Proclaim the Love of God to all people here in Yuma and Southern Arizona.

Psalm 122 - I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord!” This Psalm had particular meaning for me, as a child. Church was a place of wonder and mu-sic. A place where living in a cold somewhat isolated and dark Alaskan upbringing, the church became that bright place where we could go to see and talk to all our friends, worshiping to-gether, singing beautiful, memorable hymns, eating at all those delicious ‘pot lucks’, and a feeling that I belonged. I was home. I suppose our entire social life centered around the church. It is true that the church is not only a building but the people who radiate the love of Christ. I was welcomed by both young and old, family and others who were connected to me because we belonged to the same congregation. I was in the midst of people who cared about me. Maybe I don’t remember all the sermons, but I do remember the welcome and love. I was in a safe place. Have you ever stopped to think how you might affect those who you meet each week for worship? Is that love of Christ being shown to the one next to you in the pew or at the table during a coffee hour after worship? For many the love of Christ that they seek will be found in you. A time to connect with others that believe as they do. They too want to feel that they belong and are loved. Let us all feel the joy when someone says, ”Let us go to the house of the Lord.” Some dates to remember: February 2 -Super Bowl Sunday (just sayin’) February 14th,15th,21st,22nd- Dinner Theater February 23 -Transfiguration Sunday February 26 -Ash Wednesday (Beginning of Lent)

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

GATHER MAGAZINE BIBLE STUDY - TUESDAY - FEBRUARY 11 - 9:30 AM.

This months lesson is "We are called! Disciples of Christ" We will consider how Jesus called disciples during his earthly ministry, the calling of Paul, and his invitation to all to take up the cross and follow him. Everyone wel-come. Do not have to have the magazine to participate. JoAnn Conrath

Mental Health First Aid Training– If you missed out on the class in Janu-ary, the next class will be held in March. Look for dates and sign up infor-mation in the bulletins!

LAY SACRAMENTARIAN TRAINING

People who take the Lord’s Supper from the altar to people who are shut-in, hospitalized, or homebound are called Lay Sacramentarians.

This is an extension of the Lord’s Supper to those who are unable to be part of the congregation’s celebration. Lay people are trained for this specific ministry.

Our members are then able to receive the Lord’s Supper weekly, like the rest of the congregation.

Lay Sacramentarian Training will be held on Friday, February 14th at 9 am in the Fellowship Hall Classroom.

New Member Class begins again on February 3rd at 9am in the Fellowship Hall Classroom. Members will be received on February 23rd at the 9:30 service. There will be another session in March as well!

Araby Acres The Rev. Maralyn Benay started holding services at Araby Acres every Sunday. The offerings collected are all donated toward our Mental Health Ministry! So far donations have totaled $438. They have an average attendance of 35-40 for the last 2 weeks! Praise God!

We are getting ready for the Ladies Enrichment Luncheon on the 7th of March. We are trying something new because of losing the shop that did the fashion show. You will find a good time and nice luncheon. Tickets go on sale in February, and as always tickets are limited. We will have a potluck in March on the first Sunday of the month. Come be with us. We again need goodies for the freezer. Whether you bake or bring them from the store, please bring them to the Church. The freezer is empty.

Fellowship is a mission field, help keep it going. God Bless, Lynette, chairman of Fellowship

Mental Health Ministry

The team meets monthly to work out budgeting issues regarding the $10,000.00 grant received, review the trainings we have attended and those we are present-ing, and other obligations required of the grant. The Executive team (Penny Scheflo, Jean Gerfen, Robin, and Jeanie) works on displays, bulletin boards, bulletin inserts, and Evangel articles. A huge thanks to all of you who donated money to help us continue with this minis-try team. A special thanks to member Penny Scheflo who organized and donated some of the Mental Health display pieces in the narthex on the west wall. Please stop by the display and help yourself to any of the pamphlets that interest you. Michelle Cegon and Erica McKissack were trained in Phoenix to be instructors of Mental Health First Aid. They presented the 8 hour training to several mem-bers of Gloria de Cristo in November and also to a new group in January. Pathways to Promise is the organization we partnered with to start the faith based ministry team to bring awareness of mental illness to others. Paster Jermine Alberty and Jessica Dexter from Pathways came to GDC in December and pre-sented a three hour training to several people in Mental Health Companion-ship. Pastor Bill Timm, Robin and Earl Marlatt, and Jeanie Volpe were also trained an additional 8 hours to become instructors of the Companionship training. They will be offering future Mental Health Companionship trainings. If you have any questions, please contact any of the team members or ask at the office for any information you may need. Members of the team are: Robin Marlatt (Leader), Barb Cavanaugh (Co-Leader), Roy Cavanaugh, Michelle Cegon, Jean Gerfen, Kay Lee Grunst, Erica McKissack, Mike Rosenberg, Penny Scheflo, Pastor Bill Timm, Evelyn Trone, and Jeanie Volpe

MISSIONS AND SOCIAL CONCERNS

7

How we, as the body of Christ, can address the concerns of human need and social problems within our congregation, community, and beyond

ELCA GOOD GIFTS: $1,009.00 was collected. ANGEL TREE: 37 children were served this year, with wonderful gifts suggested by their incarcerated parents. Attendance at the Christmas party was disap-pointing, but yielded a number of poignant stories: e.g., one little boy said that he never knew about Jesus before hearing the reading of the Christmas sto-ry. There were many willing volunteers - including a visit from Santa Claus to deliver the bulging Christmas stockings - from the Glorious Quilters and many of our new Members and, as always, a generous response from the Congregation in purchasing the gifts.. KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH FAMILIES: I wrote a follow-up letter to one of the caregivers who I met when delivering her family's gifts, and a "blessings coin" given out at church. This is something I hope to "push" for in the future. We may not be able to bring them to GdeC (many of the families already attend other congregations, or live a bit far from the Foothills), but I think we can offer a feeling of hope and support to some who are very stressed and in despair. 2020 POINT-IN-TIME COUNT: I attended a training session and participated in one of their Yuma County counts. This is done throughout the country once a year to determine how many funds the Government allocates toward taking care of the homeless. I hope to follow-up by attending a Staff Meeting in March in order to assess how, if at all, M&SC could develop a new mission. FUTURE MISSIONS: The committee is planning outings to tour Amberly's Place, Food Bank, the Salvation Army, Crossroad Missions, etc., which we have done in the past. Ideas can sprout from such trips. LENTEN SOUP KITCHEN: Jerry Grill is hoping to find another group that we can join with in serving one of the Lenten Soup suppers; we feel unable to deal with it alone. COLLECTIONS CORNER: It was tidied up during the meeting; at the moment we're very cramped with the coffee / drinks counters on both sides! We're hop-ing to come to an easier arrangement with Fellowship once they sort out their new arrangement. I'll send out a separate list of what we do and do not col-lect.

Welcome...New Members

Chuck Zinky Member

I was born in West Covina, CA on Nov. 3, 1954 and baptized and raised Lutheran. I met my wife (Dawn) Nov of 1975 and we were married April 2, 1976. We have 2 daughters. One lives here in Yuma with her husband and 2 kids (grandkids are the best). The other is single and lives in the Phoenix area. I worked at the San Diego Zoo for 20 years, for the federal gov’t 10 years and the northern California utility PG&E for 10 years. Dawn worked in a dental office for over 30 years and then for 7 years took care of emergency foster kids. We had over 150 kids stay with us dur-ing that time. Dawn started showing signs of early dementia about 8 years ago. As it progressed we moved to Yuma March 2019 so my daughter could help with her care. This past October I had to put her in a memory care facility here in Yuma.

Paul E. Ehler Associate Member Paul was born in 1938 on his grandfather’s farm in Ohio, but he lived in Chester, West Virgin-ia. In 1942 he moved to Salineville, Ohio. He graduated from high school in 1956, and joined the United States Navy stationed in San Diego, California. Upon discharge from the Navy, Paul attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Caro-lina, where he met Shirley Watson, to whom he has been married 57 years. After their daughter, Joy, was born, he dropped out of school and moved to Canton, Ohio. Within a year, they moved to Michigan to pastor a small Baptist church. Son, John, was born that fall. The church did not work out, so Paul and his family moved back to Ohio, where he worked for Republic Steel for two years. In 1966, Paul and his family moved to Grand Rapids, Michi-gan, where he graduated from Grand Rapids Baptist College just days after son, James, was born in May 1970. Paul answered the call to be the pastor of First Baptist Church in Kennedy, NY. While there, he was instrumental in the church’s starting a private school and was also the principal of that school. Paul prayed for a place of service where he could go to bed at night with warm feet. In July 1978, the answer to that prayer was a move to New River, AZ – just weeks be-fore the “Hundred Year Flood” took out the new bridges to Phoenix on highway 17! During the next 11 years, he served in three different Christian schools in the Phoenix area. In 1989 Paul was called to be the principal of the Bible Baptist Academy in Yuma, AZ. After some years in two different Christian schools in Yuma, he worked in the Yuma County Jail for 12 years and retired. He filled the pulpit for the Presbyterian Church in Welton for five years. The oldest son, John, was killed in Phoenix in 1997. We moved to our present home in Sep-tember 1999. Paul retired from the Jail in 2002. He had heart surgery with five by-passes and then took up the challenges of being fully retired. There are no plans to move again until it is time to go to Heaven.

With the Adult Vacation Bible School (which was outstanding) and the annual Yard Sale, January slipped by us like a whirlwind and February promises to do the same. The annual Dinner Theatre starts February 14th for two weekends, and the Monday af-ter it ends, the WELCA Gather potluck will take place. This potluck on February 24th will feature a speaker from Amberly's Place who will explain its role in our community and how we can help and support. Free-will offerings from the potluck will go directly to Amberly's Place. Then, Lenten season starts that following Wednesday. WELCA has the opportunity to host the first Soup Supper before the 6 o'clock Lenten services on March 4th. Tradition-ally, breads, crackers and desserts go with a delicious, “mystery” soup. But we are not only about planning events, WELCA of Gloria De Cristo continues to invite a woman member to apply for financial assistance to attend the Triennial WELCA Gathering in Phoenix on July 16th. The applicant need only be a woman, a member of this congrega-tion, and never attended a WELCA Triennial event. If you'd like to apply, please con-tact a WELCA Board member or call the Church office. Thank you for your continued support. Blessings to you, Donna Brown WELCA President/Convener

FINAL HISTORY OF GLORIA DE CRISTO Thought, Memories And Did You Know------???

Did you know—

--That Pastor Campbell lived in the city of Yuma and in 1988-89 he loaded his bicycle in the trunk of his

car, drove to the foothills and went door to door on his bike making a survey of people interested in a

Lutheran mission in our area? He knocked on over 1900 doors!!

--That most of us living in the Foothills had to cross the railroad tracks on 9E to get to Otondo for wor-

ship at 9AM? We were often held up by a 125+ car freight train which made us late!

--That our first church office was in the Yuma East shopping center across the hall from the Bottoms Up

Pub? A perfect place3 to start our aluminum can project. A group of us were gathered there when the

$50,000 over goal was reached on our first fund drive. The keyboardist among us broke into “Praise

God from Whom all Blessings Flow”---a “goose pimple” moment!

--That the amount of land owned by our church is 20 acres? It stretches to the south almost to high-

line.

--That at our groundbreaking ceremony a wooden cross was placed at the very point where our altar

and altar cross would eventually be?

--That the original plans for expansion of the sanctuary were to move the altar and chancel area north

towards 40th St.

Page 12: MISSION STATEMENT · 2020-01-31 · MISSION STATEMENT † The Mission of Gloria de risto Lutheran hurch is to proclaim and reflect God’s love as revealed through Jesus hrist. †

12

--That the original plans for the Chancel area was to have the 3 graduated windows on each side of the

altar to tell a biblical story in stained glass? This would be done by donations and STILL COULD BE!!!

--That the courtyard was designed to be a fellowship area after services with coffee and cookies to be

picked up from the window in the kitchen? The lard rocks were to provide some seats, but the courtyard

proved to be too cold and breezy in the winter and too hot in the summer.

--That before 1995 when WELCA was chartered, the ladies met bi-weekly in our homes for Bible Study?

We met 2 or 3 times a year for general meetings but it was hard to find a space to hold 35-40 ladies at

that time in the Foothills. Some of our homes were used and potlucks were held.

--That WELCA sponsored a cookbook called RECIPES AND REMEMBERANCES with profits going to the

building fund? There aren’t many ladies left 20 yrs. later who entered recipes but it remains a favorite

and I use it regularly…. It’s time for another!

--That WELCA had a kitchen shower in which each of us made a hat of small items to be used in our new

kitchen? Hilarious!!—Strainers-colanders-towels-measuring cups-wooden spoons-scrubbies-you name

it—all adorning our heads.

--That there was a mens’ group, also? Around 20-25 men usually met at a café for Saturday AM break-

fast. They even served a Lenten Soup Supper.

--That there was an elementary group called Wonderful Wednesday? Students arrived from Otondo by

bus at 1:30, staying until 4:30. They had Bible Study, read, did crafts, did homework, played basketball

and outdoor games—all under the direction of volunteers. The program was discontinued when the

school district recalled the bus delivery. Too bad! Time for a program like that again.

--That there were at least 7 retired ELCA pastors and spouses worshipping with us at one time? They

helped Pastor Timm with special sermons, pastoral visiting, sand in the choir besides meeting socially

regularly.

--That there are 5 children and spouses of early members who worship here? That says a lot for Gloria de

Cristo and Yuma. Also for Lutheran heritage.

--That behind the cornerstone is a time capsule? It holds a bulletin of the day, a Yuma Sun and other

things which I don’t remember. Should it be opened???

Now, close your eyes and imagine, with me, a tall silver haired gentleman standing in the opening

(no large wooden door yet) to the narthex of this new church in the Foothills and seeing a sea of 250+

faces in our courtyard. What were his thoughts? It had been 12 years coming to fruition of his intense

vision that a Lutheran congregation would flourish in our area--- Indeed, we are flourishing! This congre-

gation is indebted to Pastor Campbell, who passed away at age 80, and his wife, Bernice residing in Cali-

fornia at age 94, for their ministry to our Lutheran community.

All things come to an end and so it is with these articles on our history. I hope you’ve enjoyed

them and are looking forward to our 25th Anniversary celebration in March. See you in church!!

Matthew 7: 7-8
