“Grief & the Holidays” Presentation

Offered through the Ministry of Consolation

The holidays are an especially hard time when grieving the loss of a loved one. The season renews memories, family ties and traditions. We become painfully aware that our special loved one is no longer present. This is often difficult for families. The pain of the loss is con-fused with the spirit of the season.

“Grief and the Holidays” is a workshop de-signed to help those who are grieving and their families to better understand the grief process, how it affects us during the holidays and how we can use this special time to continue to heal. Anyone is invited, but we ask that you RSVP through the parish office

Church Painting

The painting of the interior of the main body of our Church will begin on Monday. They will be repairing the areas that need to be plastered and painted. This work is being done in prep-aration for our 300th anniversary. The workers will be using ladders and not scaffolding so that they can remove them each day. They

will not be working on the week-ends because of our wedding and Baptismal schedule. Let us pray for the safety of those working and for the success of the project.

Advance Directives The United States Conference of Bish-ops urges Catholics to consider Designating a proxy decision maker to make health care de-cisions for them should They become incapaci-tated and unable to decide for themselves. They urge the use of Advance Directives to ap-point a health care agent who understand and shares Catholic values, and can help to apply them to the medical situation at hand.

Many of us have taken care of having a directive and have possibly given a copy to your doctor.

If you need a blank copy that has the approval of the United States Bishops, please come by the office for a copy or we can email you a copy.

We pray for those who have served our nation and have laid down their lives to protect and defend our freedom. We pray for those who have fought, whose spirits and bodies are scarred by war, whose nights are haunted by memories too painful for the light of day. We pray for those who serve us now, especially for those in harm’s way. Shield them from danger and bring them home. Turn the hearts and minds of our leaders and our enemies to the work of justice and a harvest of peace. May the peace you left us, the peace you gave us, be the peace that sustains, the peace that saves us. Christ Jesus, hear us! Lord Jesus, hear our prayer!

Mission San Jose a moment of History…

Roofing systems – thatched roofs whether the building was a jacal, adobe, or stone, each could have several types of roofing, limited by the strength of the structures. Thatched roofs were cheap, took a short time to build, and re-quired a low level of technical knowledge. They leaked easily, requiring a lot of upkeep. They were steeply pitched to allow for the speed of rainwater runoff, reducing the amount of water that could leak through. This roof was either gabled or made a shed like sin-gle slope. The gabled roofs had a triangle of rafters at each end of the building connected by a ridge beam. CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

We are nearing the end of the liturgical year. Today’s readings remind us that our own lives will draw to a close one day, and we can be certain that the Lord will encourage, strengthen, and save us—both now and at the last. The astonishing story of the Maccabees invigorates our faith as we behold an entire family willing to die rather than deny the Law of Moses. The psalm response echoes the faithful cries of the Maccabees: “I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God.” That same confidence appears in Saint Paul’s letter to the Thessalonians. “The Lord is faithful,” he testifies; “he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.” In the Gospel, Jesus explains just how long God’s protection will endure.
