INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE Everyone is welcome to the celebration of the 9-Hour Novena to the Infant Jesus of Prague on Saturday, January 25, beginning at 7:00 a.m. here at St. Joseph the Worker Church. We’ll see you then. SPECIAL NOTICE Due to the Infant Jesus of Prague 9-Hour Novena on Saturday, January 25, the 8:30 a.m. Mass will be in the Conference Center Hall and the 3:30 p.m. Confessions will be cancelled that day.

THIS IS MY BELOVED SON This Sunday’s celebration of the Baptism of the Lord closes the Christ-mas season. In the scriptures we see one more epiphany, or manifesta-tion, of the Spirit of God in Jesus—but this time it is as an adult, rather than as a child. Jesus’ baptism also serves as the inauguration of his prophetic mission and the messianic age. Today’s reading from Isaiah describes God’s chosen Messiah, upon whom God’s spirit rests. In the Acts of the Apostles Peter says that “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power” (Acts 10:38). Finally, in the proclamation from Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ bap-tism in water goes almost unnoticed. The crucial moment comes when the Spirit of God comes upon Jesus and a voice from heaven echoes the words of Isaiah: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Valentine’s cards have appeared at the shopping mall, but in the Church it is still Christmas. Today’s feast spun off from Epiphany. Originally, a blessing of holy water was an important feature of the Epiphany feast, and in the Greek Church, this was a day for leaping into the sea in grateful recollection of baptism. The gratitude may not be quite as profound among the Orthodox Christians who have to chop holes in the ice to plunge into the waters! Still, there are few better days to celebrate a baptism, and to plunge our hands into the waters of the font. Jesus found the waters of the Jordan irresistible because of what had been done in those waters: peo-ple had confessed their sins, and had acknowledged their need to be forgiven and healed. Today, we are the people in the water, and Christ comes to be with us. You won’t have to chop a hole in the ice to cele-brate your baptism. A beautiful bowl of water on the table tonight, a toast with sparkling water at dinner, or even a leap into the shower with a sign of the cross and a prayer of thanksgiving will suffice! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Scope out your local playground Children love playgrounds — so much space to explore and play — and so do parents – a great way to burn off energy! But before you send your children on their way, consider a few safety tips. Watch out for drawstrings and loose-fitting clothing. They can get caught and snagged in cracks or crevices on play equipment. Go over playground rules, both the posted ones and the ones for your own family. When you get there, check the equipment for any breaks or cracks that could be hazardous. Make sure you know the age recommendations for equipment. For more safety tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Playground Safety Considerations” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Please invite anyone you know who cannot get out to church to tune in Catholic Mass on TV or watch online anytime on Sundays at www.HeartoftheNation.org. BULLETIN AND MASS ANNOUNCEMENTS The deadline (strictly observed) for submission of Bulle-tin and Mass announcements is the previous Monday at noon. Deliver a copy of the bulletin or Mass announce-ment to the Parish Center or email it to Angela Escobar: [email protected]. To submit a photo to accompany the bulletin text, send a digital file (jpeg or TIF), color or black/white, 300 dpi. See the front cover for the parish mailing address and fax number. For more information please contact Angela Escobar, (818) 341-6634, ext. 1003.

PARISH REGISTRATION To promote a spirit of belonging, we encourage all who worship here to become registered parishioners. Having registered makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education enrollment, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and funerals. Simply attending Mass here does not make you a registered parishioner. Please call or visit the Parish Center to request a regis-tration form or complete the form online at the parish website: www.sjwchurch.com. Also, please contact the Parish Center if you have a new address or phone num-ber. The staff is able to serve you better if the parish records are accurate.

REQUESTING USE OF PARISH FACILITIES Parish and School groups that would like to reserve any facility in the parish must contact Angela Escobar in the Parish Center (818) 341-6634, ext. 1003. Only rooms reserved in advance are open. If your group needs to cancel a reservation, please let Angela know so that the room can be made available to another group. Also, if your group needs a particular room arrangement, please bring a copy of the requested floor plan to the Parish Center a week ahead.
