YEAR IN REVIEW2011

MARYLAND/PENNSYLVANIA

Each day at our medical clinics men and women arrive despondent and desperately seeking care, but leave renewed and touched as we bear witness to miracles of healing and hope. At our core, Mission of Mercy seeks to restore dignity by sharing God’s mercy with those we serve. We actively seek to transform lives by being an instrument of “healing through Love” …God’s Love.

The economic downturn, some would say recession, continued in 2011 bringing newly uninsured to seek out our services. On several occasions, our

staff and volunteers served as many as 110 patients in a single day. Those without appointments lined up as early as 2 or 3 in the morning to see a physician or dentist. Over the past year in the Maryland/Pennsylvania region we treated more than 9,200 medical patients, performed more than 3,800 critical dental procedures and dispensed more than 17,500 free prescription medications.

At the same time, as a result of the continuing economic crisis, available funding for non-profits declined significantly. Specifically, in 2011 Mission of Mercy experienced a 35% drop in donations. In response to these funding limitations, Mission of Mercy implemented staffing and payroll reductions that have taken effect in 2012. All of our adjustments have been implemented so as to minimize the negative impact on patients. With fewer clinic days, however, we fear a widening gap in our ability to meet the overwhelming needs of our patients.

Despite all this, Mission of Mercy continues to witness miracles and healing through Love by relying on the contributions and giving of others to sustain our work. The combined generosity of our community partners, foundations, donors, volunteers and healthcare organizations gives life to our mission of healing through Love and the restoration of dignity to all those entrusted to our care.

We look forward in 2012 to continue to provide innovative care by adding more physical therapists and volunteer dentists. As always, funding is essential to carry out the work that God has called us to do in His communities.

Thank you again for your compassion and generosity of spirit. We could not do what we do without you!

Dr. Michael Sullivan, Chief Medical Director

DEAREST FRIENDS,

Thanks to the generosity of a capacity building grant from the Ausherman Family Trust, Mission of Mercy was able to undertake an eight-month strategic planning process, facilitated by outside professionals, which included our local stakeholders and national board of directors.

During this process, our core values were identified as:

The resulting strategic plan (adopted by the board of directors in November 2011), reaffirmed our focus on providing mobile healthcare primarily by volunteer health professionals, to serve the increasing demand of the uninsured working poor.

In addition, our mission statement was reviewed and updated and a five-year vision statement was adopted. Mission of Mercy will continue to:

faith-based character of our work.

Mission of Mercy as an organization is energized by our planning process and we are eager to attain our strategic goals, such as:

OUR PATIENTSThe restoration of dignity – treating patients with respect and compassion – has been at the core of Mission of Mercy’s work since our inception. We recognize that at any given moment hundreds of sick and hurting individuals in our communities are desperately seeking medical care, feeling hopeless with no place to turn, often going without the medical attention they need. Mission of Mercy ensures that those in need of services are cared for whether it is with free medical visits, free dental, free prescription medications or, in some severe cases, free surgery.

- The pain she experienced each day led to severe migraines. Uninsured, unable to work and

without the funds to visit a private dentist, she struggled to care for the problem on her own, using nearly an entire bottle of over-the-counter pain medication each day. Her condition led to difficulty with her equilibrium, and as a re-sult she was unable to bend over and perform basic tasks around the house, including getting her daughter ready for school. The situation escalated to the point where she had to make the heart-breaking decision to send her daughter to live with relatives in a nearby city.

Tracy’s life changed the day she visited the volunteer dentists at Mission of Mercy.

Mission of Mercy was able to treat the oral infection and, over several subsequent visits, performed the many dental procedures she so desperately needed in order for her health to improve.

Tracy is now free of pain, happily employed as a nursing home assistant and reunited with her daughter. She credits the dedicated and loving volunteers at Mission of Mercy with her new life.

“ I was really in pain and you all took your time to help me with no pay. In this world, it’s hard to find people that will give of themselves. You are all points of light for God.”

—HEATHER W.

YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT—VOLUNTEERS SPREAD THE LOVE Being healthy and feeling loved are two of the most basic human instincts. As the medical home for our patients, our volunteers not only work with patients to help them manage their conditions, they also provide a deeper and more meaningful kind of one-on-one caring.

More than from all types of medical backgrounds donated their time and expertise in 2011. Our family of medical volunteers last year included 28 physicians, 58 nurses and technicians, 8 pharmacists, and 22 dentists/dental hygienists.

A medical background is not needed to help spread the love at Mission of Mercy. More than volunteers coordinate clinic set-up, register patients and record data, pull and prepare patient records, schedule follow-up appointments, serve as fundraisers and provide essential interpreting services and educational materials.

Each year we rely heavily on our community’s generosity and support. Pro bono and in-kind services include donated clinic facilities, surgical procedures, medical equipment and supplies, prescription medications, lab and hospital imaging services. In addition, an enormous number of volunteer hours are gifted by physicians, nurses, pharmacists, lab technicians, interpreters and clinic volunteers, all who work together tirelessly and joyfully to provide our services.

To become a Mission of Mercy volunteer or donor, please call the Mission of Mercy office today at 301-682-5683 to learn how you can help, or email us at [email protected].

In 2011 Mission of Mercy experienced

a 35% decrease in funding.

Despite these circumstances, we continue to cause

miracles and healing through

Love by relying on the generosity and giving of others to sustain our work.

“ On a given day we may have 35-40 scheduled patients and an additional 25-30 walk-ins. The walk-in demand is so high that we may have walk-ins lined up at 2 or 3 in the morning and sometimes even the night before they sit outside in their car for the dental services.”

MISSION OF MERCY GOLF CLASSIC SCORES A HOLE-IN-ONEDespite a few mulligans and some putts that fell short of the hole, the Mission of Mercy Annual Golf Classic at Holly Hills Country Club in Ijamsville, MD scored a hole-in-one by raising more than $60,000 to support our work in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

A record 88 golfers participated in this year’s event, which included Par 3 Hole-in-One, Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive challenges, as well as lunch and a post-tournament sit-down dinner. There were also several team and individual awards, guest gift bags, and raffle items.

We are especially grateful to the event’s generous sponsors for their support:

Special thanks to Darrell Guyton of Morgan Kelly Construction, who served as the Golf Committee chair, for his efforts to make the Golf Classic a resounding success!

LACING UP THEIR WALKING SHOES TO BENEFIT MISSION OF MERCYSince 2006 Mission of Mercy has been one of the selected charities to receive funds from the Walk for a Healthy Community, a 5K walk underwritten by Highmark Blue Shield. Jim and Audrey Miket have coordinated the event during this entire time (2006-2011), raising nearly $50,000 for Mission of Mercy and bringing hundreds of walkers and sponsor to participate.

Our unending gratitude goes out to Jim and Audrey for their valued dedication in supporting Mission of Mercy, thereby helping us serve the medical needs of the uninsured in the community.

TAKING A TURN ON THE DANCE FLOOR AT ANNUAL GALA Scrumptious hors d’houvres, delectable desserts and a warm ambience…the 13th annual Mission of Mercy Gala once again delighted crowds with a memorable evening full of elegance.

The black-tie optional event, held at The Grand Tremont in Baltimore, MD boasted a live and silent auction, live music, gourmet fare and, of course, dancing.

Monies raised from the evening benefitted our mobile clinics throughout the Maryland and Pennsylvania region.

SAVE THE DATE: The 2012 Gala will be held at the Bethesda Marriott on November 17, 2012. Look for information soon!

PUTTING THEIR BEST FOOT FORWARD...

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE As I sit here writing to you I realize that I have been called to serve as Executive Director of Mission of Mercy here in the Maryland and Pennsylvania region. Little did I know when David Liddle turned to me at the end of my first interview and said, “Now go home and pray about it” that I would do just that and come up with the answer I didn’t know I wanted—this was everything I was looking for!

God has a plan and in His infinite wisdom, His timing is perfect! I am so honored to be a part of Mission of Mercy and to contribute in this way, and I look forward to serving beside you. Please know that I am just a phone call away and available to hear your ideas and concerns as we continue to provide healing through God’s Love to those in our communities most in need.

Through God’s Love,

Jennifer Charlton, Executive Director

Jennifer Charlton brings extensive marketing and communications experience, as well as organizational leadership, that will provide strength and direction for Mission of Mercy in the Maryland and Pennsylvania region. Her passionate commitment to Mission of Mercy preceded her coming on board and will continue through her vision as Executive Director.

Jennifer comes to Mission of Mercy from Charlton Communications Consulting, where she served clients in the federal government, private enterprise and non-profit arenas. Jennifer currently serves as a Commissioner and Past President of the Frederick County Commission for Women, and as a board member for the Weinberg Center for the Performing Arts. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member for the international training and development company Landmark Education (Washington, D.C.), where she leads the Self-Expression and Leadership Program.

In addition, Jennifer is serving as the local Director of The Challenge at Musket Ridge tournament for the LPGA’s Symetra Tour – on the Road to the LPGA. Serendipitously, based on the Needs Assessment performed by the Community Foundation of Frederick County, the Commission For Women voted in early 2012 (Jennifer abstained from that vote) to donate a portion of the tournament proceeds to Mission of Mercy. Jennifer’s commitment to making a difference in the community will serve us well at Mission of Mercy.

“Mission of Mercy saved my life, and I’m so grateful. Without them I wouldn’t be alive... I wouldn’t be alive, if I hadn’t been able to come here.”

—JANNA SPENCE, PATIENT
