I live with Henok and Beruk Dereje. Henok is 14 years old and Beruk

is 5 years old.

This is Beruk and his mom. He goes to Preschool and everyday he wears his green uniform. He is in the kitchen eating his favorite food: firfir!Firfir is a special bread called injera mixed with spices.

Everyone in Ethiopia eats with their right hand.

This is Henok. He is wearing his uniform. Before school Henok sits in the kitchen to review his homework.

Students only go to school for half day, either in the morning or the afternoon. When they are not at school they have to help their families with cooking, cleaning, cutting wood, carrying water, or watching younger brothers and sisters.

This is Henok’s English homework. Amharic is Henok’s first language and English is his second language.

Starting in eighth grade all the schooling in Ethiopia is in English.

This is Henok’s school. It is called Bahunk Primary School. There are students from first grade to eighth grade at this school.

For ninth grade students go to

Injibara Secondary

School.

These fourth grade students are lined up for the Flag Ceremony. Every morning the students say the Ethiopian

pledge of allegiance and hear the morning announcements. Today they do not have to wear a uniform!

Now I will give you a tour of my house! Here you can see Beruk in our compound. I have two rooms; the two doors

on the right. Beruk and Henok live with their mom and dad on the left part of the house.

This is my living room.

This is my kitchen. The charcoal stove on the floor is where I cook my food and the basket on top of the shelf is where I keep my injera.

This is my bedroom.

This is my bathroom. It is also a storeroom. The toilet is a hole in the ground!

Now I will tell you a little about food in

Ethiopia!

Injera is very important for Ethiopian food. It is a spongy bread similar to a pancake. First you put injera, then you put different sauces, vegetables, or meat.

Above we are eating injera with vegetables like lentils, potatoes, peppers, cabbage, spinach, and

corn.

Below we are eating injera with fried meat called tibs. It is similar

to fajitas.

We also like to eat roasted corn on the cob!

But don’t worry! In the big cities, you can find pizza and burgers too!

My favorite things about Ethiopia are the food, the coffee, and the nature!

Ethiopia is a beautiful country, I hope you will come visit!
