Objects - or How We Learned to Stop Worryingand Love the Templates

Attributes are a simple but powerful tool to describe dataLacking the capability to create containers around attributesdescribing a common conceptThe goal was to develop something semi-standardised, withthe option to dynamically build templatesWe have considered a list of dierent solutions such assimple boolean operators, but found that the currentimplementation was superior. The result is a simple template that uses the basic attriubtetypes as building blocks along with some meta dataThe template does not have to be known in order to use theconstructed objectsWhat we maintain now is a set of common objects, butsimilarly to our other JSON formats, users can extend it withtheir own ideas.1 11

MISP Object Templates

Using a similar JSON format as the taxonomies, galaxies, warninglists. You can nd the default set of object templates in the gitrepository1.Some of the object templates capture objects from otherstandards or mimic the output of toolsWe tried to capture the most common use-cases comingfrom our own use-case as well as those of various partnersthat got involvedImprovements or pull requests for new object templates areof course always welcome

Enforcement of certain keys

The template also denes which of the added attributes aremandatoryRequirements are pointed to via their object relationsnamesWe dierentiate between two types of rule sets:I Required: Everything in this list has to be set in order for theobject to validate

I Required One Of: Any of the attributes in this list will satisfythe requirements

What will the template actually do?

Templates create a form that can be used to populate aneventWhen using templates, MISP will enforce everythingaccording to the template rulesHowever, these are only optional, users can avoid using thetemplates when creating events via the APIThe reason for this is that you do not need to have thetemplate in order to create an objectThe limitation of this system: You cannot modify objectsthat were created with unknown templates
