Misfit Acres Milestones - Fall 2011

Okay – Featured Horses! Faith (aka Snuffy) and Little Boy are quite the pair. One day, they are the best of friends and the next she is biting him in the hinny like crazy! Recently they discovered that if you climb the compost pile, you can be big like the big horses! Little Boy will be 7 years old this October and Faith is 8 years old. Coming from opposite ends of the state, they were not at all sure of each other. Faith suffers from premature arthritis while Little Boy has no medical problems however he is overly nosey. On a recent morning, right before a group of volunteer visitors was about to arrive, we pulled the large stock water tank out to clean it. This tank is positioned between two pastures allowing Augie and Magic to share a water tank with the front “pony pasture”. Quick as a wink, Faith and Little Boy darted through the fencing where the tank had been to go visit Augie and Magic and the rodeo was on! Augie and Magic were fascinated with their uninvited visitors and running began. There wasn’t anything we could do but wait for all the excitement to die down at which point we haltered both little ones and lead them out. The game was done but it sure was fun for the little ones while it lasted. Needless to say, we are much more careful when pulling out the tank for cleaning. As we look for more and more ways to help fund the rescue, we have recently expanded our recycling programs and are now seeking old laptop computers (any kind working or not), computer keyboards, computer mice, and digital cameras. These descriptions will be

added to our “Recycling for Horses” page of the website in the near future.

We have the privilege of working with some of the top recyclers who are full of great new ideas to reduce waste in our landfills, save our environment, and help fund non-profit organizations.

Please check our “Recycling for Horses” page to get re-acquainted with all the items that help fund the rescue and reduce landfill wastes. Many of these items we collect were brand specific previously but are no longer opening up even more possibilities. Our recyclers provide

We lost Cookie to severe laminitis but Jan’s love of Misfit Acres carries on each year as she donates a handmade quilt to help raise funds for the Sanctuary Horses of Misfit Acres. This lovely piece will be on display at our October 2 fundraiser with ticket prices at $3 each. Drawing for the lucky winner will be held at 4:30 and the winner need not be present. If you are unable to attend but want tickets to win, please contact us. Thank you Jan and Alan for your help and friendship.

It is with great pride that we thank Jan and Alan E. for their generosity again this year. Jan has once again created and sewn “Kerri’s Quilt” which will be available for raffle at our fundraiser. Jan donates her talents each year in honor of her sister, Kerri, who was the victim of domestic violence. After Kerri’s death, Misfit Acres took in Kerri’s pony, Cookie as the family did not have a place for this little girl.

Thanks for being here and sharing that magic with us! Until Winter—Bruce and Jody

Horses at Misfit Acres are tended to three times a day. Everyone is cared for in the early morning and evening with their own individual rations of horse feed and medications. Faith, Peanut, and Dixie are each given a small dose of BL Pellets for their conditions. Shadow requires Pergolide for her Cushing’s disease and Pala-Tech for thyroid. All four girls are on WellSolve LS feed. Little Boy, also in the “pony pasture” has no medication requirements but is on WellSolve LS as a precautionary measure. BJ & Montana are supplied an extra “meal” late afternoons which also includes Red Cell for BJ’s anemia. Hay cubes and beet pulp are soaked with water three times a day for BJ & Montana. Lucky, April, Augie, and Magic are all on oats and grass hay.

We must look quite a sight heading out the door with all the feed containers wearing nail aprons holding the mixed bottles of medications (horse treats too) and, now this time of year, flashlights. And very soon, heavy winter clothes with boots.

All these care schedules are so worth it when we get to look deeply into the eyes of the horses. It never ceases to amaze us how expressive they are. You can read the wisdom, nobility, and loyalty in them as you exchange gazes. From the days of the early west to current times of competing and trail riding, there truly is a magic about horses.
