The vessel’s steel andaluminium hull means that itis capable of navigating allof the world’s seas andoceans, including underextreme conditions and inthe polar regions. The

yacht’s name pays tribute to Alexandre Yersin (1863–1943), a doctorwith the Messageries Maritimes merchant shipping company, whodiscovered the bacillus responsible for bubonic plague in 1894. TheYersin was blessed by the Vicar General of Monaco, MonseigneurRené Giuliano, at a ceremony in the Principality attended by H.S.H.Prince Albert II. The yacht can host children on board to raise theirawareness of the need to protect the marine environment. One suchmission has already been carried out with H.S.H. THE CALYPSOGiven the name of the sea nymph from Greekmythology, the Calypso is the famous vessel usedby Commander Cousteau for his scientificexplorations between 1951 and 1996. BICENTENARY OF THE PALACE GUARDSThe Palace Guards Corps was established on 8December 1817 by the Prince de Valentinois,Honoré Grimaldi, Hereditary Prince of Monaco andAdministrator of the Principality, in the name ofhis father, Prince Honoré IV. In 1904, PrinceAlbert I, satisfied with the policing and guardduties carried out by the “carabiniers”, entrustedthem with the security of the Palace and RoyalFamily. 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF AIMÉ BARELLIAimé Barelli, born on 1 May 1917 in Loda (Lantosque, Alpes-Maritimes), was a conductor, composer, singer and jazztrumpeter. From 1940 to 1945, he was at the forefront of theFrench scene, with a fascinating technique and dexterity inscaling the treble range. He was also known for his dynamismand for the elegance of his phrasing. He rubbed shoulders andplayed with some of the greatest names in jazz, including LouisArmstrong, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Marlene Dietrich,Arthur Briggs, Nat King Cole, Henri Contet (Edith Piaf’s lyricist)and Django Reinhardt to name but a few. Artists such as ClaudeFrançois and André Ceccarelli made their debut in hisorchestra. In 1949, he moved to Monaco and, for more than25 years, he led the ensembles at the Cabaret and SportingClub, where he presented some of the Principality’s leadingevents (the Red Cross Gala, Rose Ball, etc.). He went on to open
