CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY

Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, dura-ble, serviceable Christian love. We do what we

can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open

heart.

Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is

close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ.

We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are

there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Some-times it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that,

too.

to, tanto la vida como la muerte están presentes, un

juego de intercambio entre sombra y luz. A veces, es

difícil diferenciar el margen entre la luz y la sombra.

Pero, Dios se encargará de esto, también.

SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713-1784)

No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether differ-ent but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco,

or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his

doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preach-

ing, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacra-ments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his

only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agri-culture transformed the people, while roads and irriga-tion systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when St. John Paul II beati-

fied him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true hu-

man development.

San Ireneo (c. 130-200)

Ireneo nació en Esmirna, al occidente de Turquía. Desde joven fue discípulo de Policarpo, quien a su vez fue discípulo del apóstol Juan. Su vinculación a la Iglesia apostólica es directa y eso lo manifestó en

su ministerio como obispo y escritor. En sus obras Contra los herejes, se preocupó no tanto por atacar a quienes tenían un concepto erróneo de la Iglesia y los misterios de la fe, sino de preservar la autenticidad de la fe cristiana predicada por los apóstoles. Una de las herejías que atacó fue la de los gnósticos, un grupo de cristianos que afirmaban que la salvación sólo venía por un conocimiento especial de Dios, disponible sólo para unos cuantos. Ireneo, además de maestro fue un gran pacificador, pues concilió las tensiones entre ori-ente y occidente en lo referente a la celebración de la

Pascua, en la primera luna llena de la primavera. Movido por la necesidad, aprende los idiomas de la

región de Francia y Alemania y va allá como su obispo, en medio de la persecución, donde a la postre,

murió como mártir.
