Features employment in the human health and social work sector (HSS)4. Female employment share in the HSS: over 78% in most EU countries (2009) 5. Gender pay gap in HSS vs total economy: higher in HSS in most Member States

with a few exceptions (2008) 6. Share of part-time employees in all sectors and in the HSS: consistently higher

in most Member States with a few exceptions (2009) 7. Difficulty in getting data, and in comparability (grey economy non captured)

Perspective growing demand• Ageing of population (and of employees in HSS)• Higher engagement of women in the labour market• Increasing rate of divorces

How is the EU2020 relevant?

Gender issue Target ER: "the employment rate of the population aged 20-64 should

increase from the current 69% to at least 75%, including through the greater involvement

of women, older workers and the better integration of migrants in the work force.“

via access to childcare facilities and care for other dependants

Working conditions Dialogue with Member States and social partners on how to

improve working conditions in the sector to retain workers

White jobs By 2012, the Commission, in cooperation with the Member States, will

develop an action plan to address the gap in the supply of health workers + a forecasting

exercise on health workforce needs and workforce planning, through a joint action

between the Employment and the Health services of the Commission.
