Term 2 finished on a high with the running of our annual athletics carnival. Students who attended

demonstrated great sportsmanship and competitiveness, and by the end of the carnival earnt a lot

of points for their houses. A big congratulations to the following students on being crowned age

champions in their respective age groups:

As a result of their efforts, students who finished in the top 2 of an event will proceed to the next

level of competition. We would like to wish them the very best of luck for their upcoming Mackay

district trials.

There were also a number of record-breakers on the day, which will be confirmed and presented on

Sports Awards Night later in the year. Those students are to be especially commended for their

efforts.

Along with individual representation, there also comes team results. All four houses were in

contention for the title of winning house over the duration of the carnival, however for the second

time this year Aquila were victorious. The points were as follows:

From the Principal

This term is very busy for all students, especially for our Year 12 students who will be undertaking

important assessment for their Queensland Certificate of Education. Many will also sit the QCS test on

the 29th and 30th of August.

All students should be aware of how to improve their learning after parent-teacher interviews and

completing their review and improvement analysis at school. Every student now has two goals and

strategies to achieve their success. As the Year 12 students approach the end of their schooling, all

students are very aware that the opportunities outside the school gate are the result of their

achievement at school from Years 7 to 12. For all students, “Every Day Counts”.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The race for the overall winning house is still very close, so we look forward to seeing everyone at

the Cross Country Carnival which has been rescheduled to the last day of Term 3, 15th September.

Capricornia Selection

A big congratulations to Year 7 student Harry Fortescue, who has recently been selected to represent

the Capricornia region for softball. Harry will travel south to compete later in the year at the State

Titles. Well done and good luck!

Queensland Selection

Recently two of our Year 11 students travelled to Brisbane to compete in the Qld Schools Cross

Country Championships. Rachel Silvestri and Indiana Zarb competed extremely well and should be

commended on their efforts. Rachel was successful in finishing 6th in the race which has made her

eligible for state selection. She will now travel to Hobart in a few weeks to compete in the National

Championships. Well done girls, and good luck Rachel!

Run for MI Life

In 2017, Mirani SHS are hoping to support a local cause that is close to so many peoples’ hearts. The

annual ‘Run for MI Life’ is in memory of local man Matthew Ivory who committed suicide a few years

ago. This community fundraiser is an attempt to raise awareness about suicide preventions, and raise

much needed funds for vital community support services in the Mackay region. As a school, we are

hoping to enter a school team which consists of at least 15 members. If your student and/or your

family would like to participate, please collect a form from Miss Clancy in K block. It would be great

to see as many participants as possible demonstrating Valley Pride.

CHAPPIE / SENIOR SCHOOLING

Mirani’s Z Club is very proud to say that this year’s group of like-

minded young women are brighter and keener than ever. We

have just about tripled in size, in terms of members, since last

year and we hope to grow even more!

Zonta is a women’s club that meets every Friday lunchtime to

discus and brainstorm ideas about how we, as young women,

can make a difference in the lives of women and children

around the world. With Miss Ernst guiding us baby Zontonian’s

along, already we have been kicking goals and envisioning even

more projects for the year.

At the beginning of the year we were visited by the Zonta

members Gail Clark and Leanne Shepard to induct this year’s

executives, and new members to the club. Congratulations to

our executive team President - Chontelle Myers, Vice-President

- Bella Rethus, Treasurer - Taylah Paul, Secretary - Janee Emms.

Over this next semester we continue our fundraising efforts by selling chocolates to

support our sponsor child and Rafiki Mwema Girls Home in Kenya. Members will also

participate in the 40 Hour Famine to raise awareness and money to end world hunger.

Students will also be running a stationary drive in conjunction with the CWA, and these

items will be sent to schools of Papa New Guinea. An additional project this term will

be to assemble birthing kits that will be distributed to women in third world countries

to provide women with basic clean materials for them to use during childbirth. This

semester will be a very busy and rewarding one, and we can’t wait to achieve more

great things.

Mirani Z Club

Continuing efforts

Beginning 2017

During semester one, members have continued to fundraise by

making and selling icy cups and purple ribbons in support of

International’s Women’s Day. In recognising International Women’s

day Z club members provided a delicious morning tea for all staff.

Additionally, a handful of members were privileged to attend the

Zonta Club of Mackay’s International Women’s Day brunch. This

allowed us to connect with other Z clubs from schools within the

Mackay region and hear the inspirational stories of Zonta members

like Nikola Horak an avid sailor, mother of 2 and a competitor in

Clipper Round the World Yatch Race.

While at the IWD brunch members learnt how to fold intricate ribbon

stars as part of the One Million Stars to End Violence. These stars

became our next project, over the following weeks all members

learned how to make these stars with a total of 230 stars constructed.

Our stars, and those made by others across Australia will be gathered

and put on display at the Gold Coast next year during the Common

Wealth Games.
