Students at Mirani SHS have made a positive start to the year. The level of

behaviour, attitude and uniform compliance is to be applauded. The vast

majority of students are making a genuine effort to participate fully in lessons

and extra-curricular activities. Despite the weather, the start to the term has

been very smooth. Again, accolades to the students for the great commence-

ment to the year.

One of the good things about being part of the Mirani SHS community is

seeing the success achieved by our students both at school and outside of

school. Congratulations to Year

11 students Zoe Berzinski and

Emmerson Holmes who were

chosen from many applicants to

be Youth Ambassadors for the

MECC.

Well done also to our Year 9 students involved in our English Enrichment

program due to their previous outstanding NAPLAN results and promising

results in class: Jessica Recker, Corey Counsell, Brodie McCowat, Kymberlee

Due to weather conditions on the scheduled photo day MSP

Photography will be returning on Tuesday 19th March for any

students who were not present.

Your child should have already received personalised order envelope from the photographers. Please

take care to read and follow all the instructions carefully. This will ensure your order is processed

smoothly and efficiently and will help you to avoid any late fees.

For those of you ordering online, you will notice a new, improved version this year. Please take care to

follow the instructions carefully and ensure you log onto www.msp.com.au to enter your child’s shootkey.

Additional order envelopes are available from the school office for separated parents, blended families

and grandparents. You will need to collect these on or before photo day and give it to the

photographer on photo day. Be sure to write “Mum’s order” or “Dad’s order” on top of your envelope.

To order a sibling or friends photo, please collect Sibling and Friends Order Envelope from the school

office on or before photo day, or order it online at least 24 hours in advance. Please note: Sibling photos

are only for siblings who all attend the school.

nglish Matters

The year is off to a flying start with the English and Drama departments hosting Mashed Theatre Company,

our artist-in-residence for the week in Week 3. Mashed’s Matt Caffoe sMashed the delivery of a four-lesson

approach to monologue-writing and performance in Year 12 English classes, while also teaching in Year 7 to

11 Drama classes. Students benefit enormously from learning from industry professionals as we have

witnessed over the four years that Mashed has been visiting us.

Also consuming four Year 12 students last week was the Lions Youth of the Year competition, held on

Tuesday, 12th February. Captains, Stirling Frater and Rachel Ward, along with Vice Captain, Jessica Grech and

Senior Leader, Michael Entwistle were our competitors this year, submitting to an interview during the day

and then performing in the public speaking component of the competition that night.

Readers’ Cup is up and running again this

year, and coordinator, Mrs Krystal

Henderson will soon be looking for

interested students in the Junior school to

form teams. This competition provides yet

another opportunity for students to

challenge themselves and have fun reading

at the same time. There are many such

opportunities advertised throughout the

year, and I would urge you to support your

student(s) in having a go. They won’t know

what they are capable of, until they try.

On another note, Year 11 General English and Essential English require students to have access to a

laptop so that they can access Mirani’s Online Learning Environment among other things, but some are

still not organising this. They are able to get day or year-release laptops if unable to bring a personal

device to school and I would urge parents to encourage their students to do this. The benefits are many,

including students being able to access homework, additional information, media links and assessment

online, especially important if they happen to be absent for any reason. Students going the MECC each

week, missing a day’s work across up to 4 subjects, will definitely see the benefit of having a laptop as

they will be catching up on that work online during ‘spares’.

The winner of this prestigious national

competition goes on to represent the school, and

host club, Mirani Sugar Valley Lions, at the next

level of competition in Mackay on March 9. That

person this year is, School Captain, Stirling Frater,

who took out both the Public Speaking and Youth

of the Year awards on the night. Congratulations

to Stirling and to all competitors on a fine

performance in the comp. Special thanks must

also go to our Cultural Captains, Taylah Waters

and Aimee Kersey, who very ably hosted the

evening, in what was their first responsibility in

their new role.

The Maths Department has hit the ground running this year, welcoming on board Mr Cameron

Ludowyke and Mr Peter Behrens who are working across multiple faculties. I wish them all well for the

year ahead. At the end of last year we said goodbye to our fearless leader, Miss Sonya Littee, who has

taken on a position at another school in Brisbane. I am looking forward to working with all the teachers

in 2019 in her place.

The Maths Department will continue to offer free afterschool tutoring for all students. This will be run

on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:15pm to 4:00pm. The students do not need to

book ahead but will need to sign in at D04 by 3:15pm on the day. This has proven to be a worthwhile

way for students to receive extra Maths assistance in a friendly and relaxed environment and we are

keen to see students taking up this opportunity again.

I am also looking forward to working with parents, carers and students to get the best possible outcome

for our students, so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.

the start of their vocational training. This will allow for a smooth enrolment into FSK20113 – Certificate II

in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

A Unique Student Identifier is used to keep an online record of Vocational Training that students under-

take through-out their lifetime and to print certificate outcomes. Thank you to those students and par-

ents who have organised and responded to our previous requests.

If you still have not supplied a USI for your student please go to the following website -

The Arts Department

Shake & Stir Theatre Co. arrived at Mirani SHS on Friday 15th February to perform for our Year 7

students. The performance, Terrortorial, told the story of Stephen, Craig and Sophie as they face the

unimaginable – shaking up their lives and shifting to the school down the road to commence Year 7.

Tackling this change with the advice of a quirky assortment of on screen characters including teachers,

parents, older siblings and even school bullies, this trio learn that change can be invigorating.

Our Year 7 students were very engaged in this funny

and relatable show and they were guaranteed

laughs. With a heightened version of their school and

their friends presented on stage, students were able

to see that the transition to high school is not all

doom and gloom. Shake&Stir hope they were able to

open up conversations about the stresses students

go through when transitioning into high school.

Well done Year 7 and we hope you liked the show!

Mirani SHS is about to embark on our 2019 Arts Tour to Melbourne. The tour will provide opportunities for per-

formance, exhibition workshops and other professional development in contemporary, interdisciplinary arts

practice. The tour will depart on the 20th September and return on the 27th September 2019.

Reminder: There is a mandatory Parent/Guardian and student

information evening to be held at Mirani SHS

on Wednesday 27th February at 6:00pm.

If you are an Arts student and wish to find out more, please see Mr Neill in H Block and collect an

information note and consent form ASAP and attend the information evening.

Year 10 Work Experience

In year 10, all students are required to undertake two weeks of structured work Experience as

part of their Certificate. This is compulsory.

Dates for 2019 are:

27th May to 31st May 2019

7th November 2019 to 8 November 2019.

We suggest your student starts thinking about what field they would like to gain experience

and if they have a preferred employer. Factors that need consideration when making these

decisions are:

Availability of transport to and from the work place

It is important to choose a career/s that suits your students’ academic pathway

Willingness to complete mandatory requirements necessary for specific careers eg white

cards for construction sites & work place health and safety inductions.

On completion of their Certificate II students will gain 4 points toward their QCE (Qld

Certificate of Education).

Students will be issued with a Work Experience placement request form early this year to take

home and complete. Please ensure all information is completed especially emergency

contact numbers and parent email address to allow an alternate means of communication.

A great opportunity awaits, and hopefully your student will continue to participate in Work

Experience beyond year 10 as the benefits are evident in how many of our past and present

students gain apprenticeships, traineeships and employment through this program.

For any further information please contact Cathryn Post - Work Experience Coordinator.
