Donor-Supported Nurse’s Nook Helps Children in Need SucceedOur Students Need Your Help – And We Do, TooYou might not realize this, but many children in Oconto County are living in poverty. These children need help, and the new HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Nurse’s Nook program is here to do just that.

Although new to HSHS St. Clare, the Nurse’s Nook is not new to Nuala Nowicki. In 2014, Gillett School District became unable to sustain a full time school nurse. To help, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital and Prevea Health established a contract for Nurse Nuala, a Prevea Health colleague, to serve as the school nurse for the district. Shortly after she arrived, Nurse Nuala realized the students faced a number of health challenges that negatively impacted their ability to learn and succeed in school.

Nurse Nuala wanted to help in any way she could, so she started an informal “Nurse’s Nook” program to help meet the needs of students. Using her own money and donations from the community, she started collecting a variety of basic necessities such as food, clothing, and hygiene products.

However, it quickly became apparent that these health disparities were a county-wide concern and her individual efforts were not sustainable long-term.

In summer 2017, a community-wide collaboration between HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, local HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Prevea Health Centers, Prevea Health, Gillett School District, Oconto Falls School District and Suring Public School District was established, and our Nurse’s Nook Program was created.

The program provides basic need items, medication, food, and transportation to students needing assistance. It is provided free of charge to the students and their families and relies on generous support from the community – and wonderful people like you – in order to do so.

As your local community hospital, HSHS St. Clare recognizes that local students in need are not just community members and neighbors – they are patients. We believe action must be taken to meet their basic needs and ensure they have access to high-quality health care. Addressing these needs provides youth with increased opportunities to learn and succeed in school, and become healthy, contributing members of the community.

You can join us. The Nurse’s Nook completely relies on the generous gifts given by people in our community – wonderful people like you.

To learn more about the Nurse’s Nook and how you

can help children in our community, or if you know of a student in Gillett, Suring or

Oconto Falls who could benefit from these services,

contact Nuala Nowicki at [email protected]

or Matthew Astleford at the HSHS St. Clare Foundation at

“ Friends and supporters like you exemplify the true meaning of Christmas – to give and love. Health, healing, and hope continue to be delivered at HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital because of your dedication to our mission. As the winter nights grow longer, you shine as bright stars in our hospitals. We are so thankful for all you do, now and through all the seasons.”

Dan DeGroot Chief Operating Officer HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital

Welcome Center Volunteers Serving Important RoleYour gift of time can make a difference, tooThe HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital Welcome Center, located inside the hospital’s main entrance, is staffed by friendly volunteers, ready to provide patients and visitors directions, information and wheelchair assistance.

The center was made possible thanks to a generous gift given by ST Paper, LLC.

“Our goal is to put patients’ and visitors’ minds at ease as soon as they walk through our doors; to lessen the burden, to lessen their worry,” says Regina Boettcher, Volunteer Services HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital.

Volunteers work in teams of two, on a weekly basis, creating an opportunity for couples, friends and neighbors to work together. The volunteers are people like you, who are willing to act as ambassadors for the hospital, welcome patients and visitors, and offer assistance.

There are several opportunities for you to help. Weekly, seasonal and on-call volunteers are needed during the following shifts: • 8 a.m. to Noon, Mondays • Noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays • 8 a.m. to Noon, Wednesdays (every other week) • Noon to 4 p.m., Thursdays (every other week)

If you have time to spare during the dates and times mentioned above, contact Regina at (920) 848-6348, or email [email protected].
