mirabelthe

foundation2014 annual report

“ It is unlikely that our work will ever be fulfilled but it could not be more fulfilling.

The lead up to our 16th birthday has been filled

with events, challenges, achievements and

milestones, all shaping and paving the road for the

future. Countless people continue to contribute

to our growth and we are at an age where we

feel assured but never complacent or alone.

Our years of experience continue to influence

us without ever jeopardising our original vision.

At 16, we grow, adapt and evolve but remain

completely recognisable.

Substance abuse in our society is an ever changing

landscape and the consequences of parental drug

use on children have never been more complex

than they are today. The constant referral of new

children to Mirabel results in increased resources

needed. In a tough fundraising climate, the

generosity of new and long term supporters

ensured that there was never a question of turning

a child away.

It is unlikely that our work will ever be fulfilled but

it could not be more fulfilling. A tangible measure

is seeing 51 Mirabel young people turn 18 this

year, entering adulthood with a hope that was

absent in their early years. A different future lies

ahead compared to the one that they envisaged as

emotionally isolated, bereaved young children.

Another year can only be celebrated when shared.

To everyone who is part of Mirabel; from the

team, Board, committees, volunteers, donors and

supporters, to the carers and over a thousand

Mirabel children, it would not be a celebration if it

were not for you. We feel ‘sweet sixteen’ indeed.

EARLY INTERVENTION2006>>

At 3 years of age, Annie still drinks from a bottle and hasn’t learnt

how to eat a solid meal.

2014>>

At 11 years of age, Annie is the district age champion in swimming.

In 2013-14, the number of children receiving vital support from Mirabel grew by 23%.

We received on average referrals of more than 5 new children each week for crisis

support, referral and early intervention. This early intervention program aims to minimise

the negative effects of parental drug use on children and strengthen the capacity of

their carers to provide a permanent and nurturing environment for the children.

50% of all child deaths involve adult substance abuse

278 new children were referred to Mirabel for crisis support

THERAPEUTIC GROUPS2007>>

Eliza is aggressive towards other children and has trouble making friends.

2014>> Eliza is encouraging, friendly and helpful to the other girls in the group.

In 2013-14, 131 children attended our weekly therapeutic girls and boys groups.

These groups provide a safe and supportive environment where children can begin to

make sense of their difficult past, learn appropriate ways to express their feelings and

develop important social skills.

87% of Australian children who witness bullying do nothing to help the victim

77 therapeutic groups were facilitated by Mirabel for primary school aged children

KINSHIP CARER SUPPORT GROUPS

2005>>

Leonie keeps to herself and doesn’t tell anyone why she is raising her grandchildren.

2014>> Leonie regularly enjoys weekends away with a group of grandparents that she met

at Mirabel’s Kinship Carer Support Groups.

In 2013-14, 170 kinship carers regularly attended our support groups in Melbourne, rural

Victoria and NSW. These groups provide important opportunities for grandparents and

relative carers to come together and give one another understanding and acceptance,

improving community networks and peer support for previously isolated carers.

60% of grandparents in Australia said their health had deteriorated as a result of parenting their grandchildren

49 Kinship Carer Support Groups were facilitated by Mirabel

YOUTH SUPPORT1998>>

David hoards food under his bed, has terrifying nightmares and is afraid to go outside.

2014>> David has completed a building apprenticeship and is now in full time employment.

In 2013-14, disadvantaged young people aged 13-18 years were provided with both

individual support as well as 17 tailored group activities. These young people have

frequently been raised in volatile and unstable environments where they are exposed

to drugs, unemployment, homelessness, violence and criminal activity.

Without intervention, they are at a high risk of repeating the

destructive path of their parents.

7 people in Australia die each day from suicide

280 Mirabel young people were provided with intensive youth support

SOCIAL AWARENESS2011>>

Mirabel established its first social media platform for young people.

2014>> Mirabel provides regular support to young people via Facebook and email.

In 2013-14, we launched our new responsive website so that tablet and smart phone

users can easily access information and resources about Mirabel. We share the stories

of Mirabel children and families through videos, Facebook and Twitter to increase

understanding and awareness of the many disadvantaged children and carers

affected by family substance abuse.

99% of 16 year olds in Australia use online social networking

3172 people communicate with Mirabel via our social media channels

EDUCATION2006>>

Riley is behind in all aspects of his schooling and struggles to participate in

educational activities.

2014>> At 15 years of age, Riley is now receiving positive school reports.

In 2013-14, Mirabel provided educational support in the form of tutoring, teacher’s

aides, homework groups, educational assessments, school advocacy and assistance

with school fees, uniforms and books. Improving the academic outcomes of

these children ultimately increases the options they have for their future.

50,000+ young people in Australia are long-term unemployed

156 Mirabel children were provided with vital educational support

80% of kinship carers are 55 years or older

MIRABEL HOUSE & RESPITE

2003>>

Jana is parenting her 4 young grandchildren who were recently orphaned due to

their mother’s drug use.

2014>> Jana is enjoying another short break away from caring for her grandchildren.

In 2013-14, we struggled to keep up with demand for respite for the growing number of

Mirabel families. Our respite program provides kinship carers with an essential break, helping to

alleviate the stress of caring for a young family, while their children create happy childhood

memories. In addition, 118 children and carers experienced a relaxing family holiday by the

beach at Mirabel House and 42 children and carers had a great day out at our Easter Eggstravaganza.

104 children & carers benefited from respite

55% of children in out-of-home care in Australia live with extended family

FAMILY CAMPS & EVENTS

2013>>

Felicity does not think she can continue to provide the day to day care for her

5 grandchildren.

2014>> Felicity said, “You’ll never know what you have done for my family.

You’ve given me back my hope.”

In 2013-14, our family events included Family Fun Days, Carer Relax Days and Lord Somers

Family Camps. These events strengthen family bonds, giving them time

together and creating positive family memories.

434 children and kinship carers took part in Mirabel’s family camps and events

MIRABEL’S PEOPLE1999>>

Janine provides essential respite for a family of 5 boys.

2014>> Janine leads Mirabel’s respite program and is thrilled to work alongside some special

volunteers who fondly remember their times with Janine at Mirabel House when

they themselves were a Mirabel child.

In 2013-14, we welcomed Colin Hay and Allison Langdon as Mirabel Ambassadors. Our

team of staff, volunteers and supporters work together to raise awareness and improve

outcomes for this vulnerable group of children and their kinship families.

250,000+ reports of child abuse will be made in Australia this year

VOLUNTEERS2007>>

Serge attended Mirabel’s volunteer training.

2014>> Serge donated 50 children’s birthday presents, helped out at 5 Mirabel camps and

donated some colour printing for Mirabel’s mail outs.

In 2013-14, Mirabel’s volunteers contributed with every aspect of what we do. From our

dedicated Board, committees, therapeutic group and homework club helpers, those

who wrap presents and to the volunteers who give up their precious sleep to be part

of our camps and respite program. Without their involvement we could not reach the

number of children that we do each year.

5.4 million Australian adults volunteer their time to benefit others

202 volunteers donated their time and expertise to help Mirabel meet growing demand

87% of Mirabel’s funding in 2013-14 came from the generous support of the wider community

FINANCES2004>>

Mirabel’s income exceeded $1million for the first time.

2014>> Mirabel now needs $2.2million a year to maintain its current level of service provision.

In 2013-14, Mirabel worked to diversify its financial supporter base through the

development of corporate partnerships and new innovative fundraising campaigns.

Without the ongoing support and generosity of our donors and supporters, we would

not be able to continue providing care and assistance to the growing number of

children and carers affected by parental drug use.

$3 billion is spent on child protection in Australia each year

1289 children were supported by Mirabel in the past year

FINANCIAL SUPPORTMirabel’s ability to provide services to children relies on generous funding provided by

various donors, foundations, corporations and governments. In the financial year

2013-14, Mirabel’s income was derived

from the following sources:

INCOMEMirabel’s income for the financial year 2013-14 totalled $2,109,070.

EXPENSESMirabel’s expenses for the financial year 2013-14 totalled $2,145,377.

RESULTMirabel’s operating deficit for the financial year 2013-14 was $36,307.

OUR FINANCESOne of the paradoxes we face is that tough economic

times increase the demand for our services, but the

financial support we need to fund them becomes

harder to find. 278 new children were referred

to us for crisis support during the year, yet it was

undoubtedly one of the most challenging years of

fundraising I’ve experienced.

I would like to commend the incredible efforts of

the Mirabel team, the Board of Management and

the generosity of all of our supporters through this

difficult year. The team proved their ability to provide

high quality support to a growing number of children

and carers in an incredibly efficient manner. Our full

year financial result, a small deficit of $36,307, was

actually better than the result we budgeted for.

This amazing performance allowed us to live by

our mandate of never turning a child away, allowed

us to keep our cash reserves intact and most

importantly, ensured we played our crucial role

in helping the lives of so many children now and

hopefully making them brighter for the future.

Mirabel continues to rapidly develop strategically

and is more cohesive and more efficient in service

delivery than ever before. With the continued

generosity of our supporters, the future of the

Mirabel children is in good hands.

The Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report

The Committee of the Foundation is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report and has determined that the basis of preparation described in Note 1 to the financial report is appropriate to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and the ACNC Act 2012 and is appropriate to meet the needs of the members. The Committee’s responsibility also includes such internal control as the Committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditor’s Responsibility

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We have conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.

An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report that is appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the Committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.

Our audit did not involve an analysis of the prudence of business decisions made by the Committee or management. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Independence

In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of Australian professional ethical pronouncements.
