The Artists

THE KRUGER BROTHERS In an ever-expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar, lead vocals), and Joel Landsberg (bass, vocals) personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition.

Although initially staying fairly close to a traditional repertoire, the Kruger Brothers later turned to song writing and composition in order to draw more closely from their personal experiences. The result is a catalog of songs and music distinguished by its rich detail and an insight into the delicacy and complexity of everyday life.

RHONDA VINCENT & THE RAGE There is only one voice and there is only one Rhonda Vincent. But IS she a bluegrass singer or a country singer? The simple answer – yes. Vincent answers the “blue-grass or country” question once and for all with “Only Me” (Upper Management), her ambitious double-album that is a little bit country, a little bit bluegrass and a whole lot awesome. Across twelve songs – six bluegrass songs on one CD, six country songs on the other – Vincent shows that she is a true artist not confined by strict musical genres or corralled by boundaries set in place by corporate music honchos. Vincent is a singer’s singer, true and pure.

THE SECRET SISTERS The Secret Sisters initiate many new traditions on their second full-length album, Put Your Needle Down [Republic Records]—produced by the legendary T Bone Burnett. The duo of Laura and Lydia Rogers has certainly come a long way from their critically acclaimed 2010 self-titled debut and an even longer way from their childhood in Florence, Alabama—just outside of the legendary music mecca Muscle Shoals. Embracing a myriad of styles and focusing on songwriting this time around, their growth becomes evinced within both the music and the title.

BALSAM RANGE Balsam Range is comprised of five gifted friends who all hail from Western North Carolina.Tim Surrett delivers entertaining MC work as well as seasoned lead and harmony singing. Tim also plays bass most of the time, and he will occasionally move his talents to the resonator guitar. Buddy Melton is one of the most gifted tenor voices in bluegrass and Americana today. His range and tones largely give BALSAM RANGE its identifying sound, and his stellar fiddle playing supports the band’s programs equally. Caleb Smith has been called “one of the top young guns of guitar.” His envied unique guitar style pairs perfectly with his energetic power singing. Darren Nicholson is one of the most gifted mandolins players and harmony singers ever to come from the Southern Mountains. Marc Pruett plays traditional three finger banjo in intuitive and powerful ways that blend and compliment the influences in the band of jazz and bluegrass…country and gospel…and swing and old-time.

HUMMING HOUSE At once danceable and reflective, familiar and nostalgic, Humming House is a musical experiment gone right. Woven together from diverse backgrounds (Americana, classical composi-

tion, bluegrass, soul, and traditional Irish music), their playground of musical exploration has something for every generation. Unmistakable pop sensibilities mixed with a depth of lyrical narrative give their whimsi-cal songs an irresistible quality that can only be described by the imagery of the name – Humming House.

DARIN & BROOKE ALDRIDGE Both highly acclaimed vocalists in their own right, Darin and Brooke combine rich harmonies with impeccable musicianship to create the unmistakable sound that has made them one of the hottest young acts in acoustic music. Darin was a member of the acclaimed Country Gentleman for six years and is a highly sought-after multi-instrumentalist. Brooke has been lauded for having one of the most distinctive voices in any genre of music. Together, they’ve surrounded themselves with a band of equally amazing pickers who support and enhance the Aldridge style, which includes both tradition and innovation. Songs that are thoughtfully chosen by the marriedcouple for whom love and faith always come first. There is a sweetness and a lightheartedness in their music with positive lyrics and the occasional sense of just plain fun.

MIPSO The renegade traditionalists of Mipso are doing their part to push the Appalachian folk tradition into new territory. With ringing four-part harmonies, singable yet poignant lyrics, and heart melting charisma, this NC four-piece borrows the best from bluegrass, contempo-rary country, pop, gospel, folk, and American singer-songwriter traditions to create their hallmark sound.

SNYDER FAMILY BAND The Snyder Family Band from Lexington, NC, performs a blend of family friendly music that appeals to all ages and audiences. What the listener will find exciting about a Snyder Family Band show is how these young musicians take from multiple genres and create a unique sound that includes not only bluegrass, but also southern rock, blues, Texas swing, and newgrass.

THE BAREFOOT MOVEMENT Hailing from Johnson City, Tennessee, this band is packed-full with a fun mix of traditional Bluegrass and modern Americana-Pop reminiscent of The Dixie Chicks. For being such a young group of musicians, The Barefoot Movement possess a tight sound and skill level that surpass their years.

KONTRAS QUARTET Admired for their virtuosity, vibrancy and energy, the Kontras Quartet has established an international reputa-tion for their refined and captivating performances. Their name, which means “contrasts” in Afrikaans, is a fitting name for a unique string ensemble comprised of artists from four different parts of the world: Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. It is this wonderful diversity that informs the group’s exploration of lesser-known music from Russia, South Africa, Japan, and the U.S. (the quartet members’ home countries), and inspires Kontras to present the traditional quartet literature in a new and unexpected light.
